“Being EHS means experiencing recurring feelings of stress or illness when near an EMF source. Any noticeable, recurring ill health that is triggered by an electromagnetic field, and that diminishes or disappears away from the EMF source, constitutes a case of electrical hypersensitivity. While symptoms may diminish quickly after the exposure is reduced, it can take several days, weeks or occasionally months if the person has become severely sensitised, for the effects to disappear.

It is not yet known whether EHS is an independent condition, or a kind of Multiple Environmental Sensitivity Syndrome, linked possibly also to Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Syndrome.

For EHS sufferers living in a high EMF environment, it is like a person with auditory sensitivity trying to carry on normal life with someone shouting in both ears all the time.

Many electrically sensitive people seem to have quite dry skin and can carry high electrostatic charges on their body. Not only can other people experience a ‘zap’ when touching the person, but the electrostatic charges can also be transferred to electronic equipment causing equipment to malfunction. This can sometimes give an appearance of clumsiness or ineptitude, which can lead to a lack of confidence in using electrical equipment. This is quite concerning when young people, even in pre-school nurseries, are being exposed to computers, and they may develop this sensitivity, which can lead to a lifelong lack of confidence and self-esteem problems.

Electrical hypersensitivity (EHS) is a combination of up to three factors

Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity

1. a natural sensitivity, similar to other idiopathic or allergic reactions, which is not typical of the general population.
2. sensitization by some trigger, which could be one, or more, of a variety of commonly encountered substances.
3. sensitization by some incident, which has the capability of damaging the bioelectrochemical communication within the body.

Some people are electrically sensitive, that is they are aware of the presence of electromagnetic fields (EMFs), but are not adversely affected by them. Other people may or may not be aware of the presence of EMFs, but can become seriously ill in their presence.

These people we refer to as electrically hypersensitive (EHS). People who have developed EHS have a physiological disorder, characterized by neurological and idiopathic reactions, that noticeably appear or intensify near sources of EMFs such as electrical appliances, especially VDUs (computer monitors), power lines, fluorescent lights, mobile phones, cordless phones, wireless computers (wLANs), mobile phone base stations, etc.

The current US standard for cell site radiation in the US is 580-1000 microwatts per square centimetre.

Many other countries have set levels hundreds of times lower.

The reason for the disparity is that no one really knows what level of cell tower radiation is safe.

Current limits have been influenced more by economic and political imperatives than by research into health and safety.

More important than the intensity of electromagnetic radiation emitted at the tower is the strength of the resulting EMF wherever people live and work. This depends on the intensity at the source – and one’s distance from it.
Cell towers safe distance

Different cell sites emit different amounts of radiation.

Radiation levels from a single cell site vary, depending on usage. Even maintenance issues can affect how much radiation a cell site is currently producing.

Radiation around a single cell tower may not be uniform – there can be hot and cold spots.

Measurement with a suitable meter is the only way to know how much radiation you are receiving at a particular spot.

But it seems that 400 metres is a safe distance for most people, and smaller distances may also be safe in some cases.
Cell tower health effects

Individuals differ in their response to similar levels of EMF radiation.

For some people, short term effects from cell tower radiation exposure may include headaches, sleep disorders, poor memory, mental excitation, confusion, anxiety, depression, appetite disturbance and listlessness.

This list is not intended as a diagnostic aid, as each symptom here can have many causes.

But if you and your family do not experience any of these symptoms you are probably not being overwhelmed by cell tower radiation.

The health effects associated with overexposure to radiofrequencies are so numerous and varied that you may already have clientele that could benefit from knowledge about radiofrequency sickness. Many individuals with MS symptoms have experienced a substantial reduction in symptoms when their electrical environments were cleaned up.(see footnote 5) I experienced multiple chemical sensitivities along with the symptoms that earned me the chronic fatigue syndrome diagnosis. It took time, but those sensitivities have almost completely cleared up.

The cholinesterase enzyme is impaired by both radiofrequency radiation and organophosphate pesticides, reducing tolerable exposures for both pollutants.(see footnote 6) Exposure to radiofrequency radiation interferes with the action of enzymes, signaling pathways, and makes the immune system simultaneously hyperactive and less effective.(see footnotes 7,8)

Detrimental biological effects, distinct from tissue heating effects, have been extensively documented in studies at a range of different frequencies and at levels below the current United States safety standard.(see footnote 7)

A recent report (Nov 5th 2005) by the UK government’s Health Protection Agency came up with an excellent list of list of attempted treatments and their efficacy. The treatments were listed under section 4.5.3 of the report. They are:

However, the report states:

“”The studies reviewed suffer from a combination of the small number of subjects included and the potential variation both within and between study populations. Little information is given as to the attributed exposures of the subjects. These factors limit the applicability outside the immediate study group. For those studies where detail was available, only two were placebo controlled”"

We are clearly a long way from having an accurate picture of the effectiveness of each of the treatments!

Computer usage is the most popular reason given as the cause. Olle Johansson, a world-renown expert on the subject, coined the term ‘VDT sickness’ to categorize the specific sensitivity some people have to computer monitors. Swedish journalist Gunni Nordstrom cites chemicals emitted from monitors and the electricity coming from them working synergistically as a possible cause.
Dental amalgam is often cited too as a reason. A study has shown that it is possible for certain frequencies of electricity which emanate from computer monitors to release amalgam into the body where it can cause chronic toxicity. Indeed, mercury amalgam toxicity from dental work is a topic of heated debate in it’s own right.

There is a strong link between chemicals toxicity and electrical sensitivities, i.e. that the latter may well be a by-product of the former. The UK based Breakspear Hospital reports that when one removes the chemical sensitivities from the body, the electrical sensitivities disappear also.

The Environmental Health Centre Dallas, reports that of 500 patients treated for MCS (Multiple Chemical Sensitivity), 80% of them also have electrical sensitivities.Other causes of sensitivities include mobile phones & masts, fluorescent lighting and low-energy lamps. http://www.emfnews.org/products.html
