In the year 2000, a Maryland doctor, Chris Newman, filed an $800 million lawsuit against Motorola and Verizon. He claims using his cellular phone caused his brain cancer. That striking story, and other recent events, suggest that the rules are changing in the cellular world. Will public pressure force cell phone makers to do something about their phone’s radiation?
Ironically, the cell phone radiations issue has started exactly the same way: According to Newsweek, in 1993, a man alleged that his wife had died of brain cancer from cell-phone use. He then sued the manufacturer but the case was dismissed.

But since then, many other newsstories have been published on cell phone risks and manufacturers are probably starting to sense the public’s worries, since we now see initiatives coming from the industry. At the beginning of July, shortly after the World Health Organization (WHO) called for more cell phone studies, the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA) announced that phone makers would be starting to include radiation level information on their products, thus potentially allowing us to select a phone depending on its radiation level.

It’s an important step, compared to their traditional attitude, which has always been to say: “There is no proof that cell phones involve a health risk.” No proof… yes, but does that mean there are no risks? Certainly not! There might be risks but we can’t prove it yet, and that’s all their “reassuring” statements say.

What we really need is more studies… and stronger studies. There have been some but their scientific method is criticized. The stronger the upcoming studies, the more useful they will be. It’s a very open field for researchers cause there are many things we need to know: do the phones harm us?; What about the base stations?; Are protective devices efficient?; Is this less damageable to wear your phone at your belt and use a headset?

In my opinion, we will soon see tens of initiatives burgeoning among the industry itself. As concerns about health risks raise and news stories continue to pile up, phone makers and network operators will have to do something else than just say “There is no proof” if they want to meet their exponential growth forecasts… It is said that worldwide cell phone users will skyrocket from 450 million in 1999 to 1.2 billion by 2003!

Such a market should motivate them to find workable solutions quickly if they don’t want their potential customers to change their mind… before they boil it.

Wireless lovers will cry out, “But that’s not the same thing!” But in a way it is. Radiation damage over time applies to ALL forms of radiation, from radio frequencies (RF) up through ultraviolet. Damage pathology is well known and there are ANSI standards for exposure to almost all forms of electromagnetic energy. Strict safety standards have been established to light entering the eye – including ultraviolet wavelengths at almost energy level. With shorter wavelengths there is a higher the risk of developing cataracts fairly quickly. Various radio and light wavelengths have well established safe exposure levels.

Consider Pierre and Madame Curie, well known for their discovery of Radium and Polonium. No radiation standards existed for them yet when Madame died July 4th 1934from radiation sickness. Pierre died in 1906. His demise hastened by ill health and did not recover from being run over by a horse drawn carriage. Microwaves, ultraviolet, alpha, beta and gamma radiation are ALL part of the same electromagnetic spectrum. All of these forms of radiation will damage the body, just in different ways and at different dose levels.

Cell phone companies do not want you to even remotely think about any of these facts.

How many cell phone and Blue Tooth users must DIE before people wake up and a safety standard is established? Don’t hold your breath waiting ­ cell phone corporations are very powerful and they will make certain no such standard will ever be established. Period. And don’t lie to yourself by counting on Uncle to protect you. If the government can’t protect itself ­ how can it protect us from anything? Perhaps it doesn’t want to protect you, in the name of population control.

HEALTH authorities have called for an inquiry into the use of wireless Internet networks in schools because of concerns they could be exposing children to the risk of cancer.

The call from a British health watchdog came after it was revealed that classroom ‘wi-fi’ networks give off three times as much radiation as a typical mobile phone mast.

Guidelines from the Britain’s Health Protection Agency already state that masts should not be sited near schools because of a possible cancer link and other health risks.

Now its chairman, Sir William Stewart, is seeking a review of the health effects of wi-fi networks amid fears they could pose even greater dangers.

Wi-fi works by transmitting information via radio waves from a telephone line to a computer and back.

They have been installed in some of Australia’s leading schools including Melbourne’s Xavier College which has invested in 50 network transmitters across the school.

In recent years, as Wi-Fi technology has been introduced into classrooms – together with the explosion in popularity of cell phones – Philips said he has received reports of short-term memory loss, constant headaches and lethargy among students.

He conceded that these symptoms may in part be caused by poor diet and lack of exercise but said he also wondered whether wireless Internet in classrooms were not also to blame.

Unlike the case with radio and television, which involve continuous wave transmissions, Wi-Fi relies on pulsed transmissions to transmit data. As a result, Philips said, the system is exposing people to types of radiation they haven’t had to deal with before.

He could not say that Wi-Fi is actually dangerous but believes it may be a health time bomb set to explode years or even decades from now.

“I’m really worried,” Philips said. “I think it’s disastrous. I think it’s a lot bigger than passive smoking.”

The World Health Organization established an international EMF project in 1996 to study long-term health effects of the radiation.

“Electro-magnetic fields of all frequencies represent one of the most common and fastest growing environmental influences, about which anxiety and speculation are spreading,” the agency says on its website. “All populations are now exposed to varying degrees of EMF, and the levels will continue to increase as technology advances.”

Now, instead of noise, imagine a world where people can’t sense radio frequency energy. That is the world we live in. We hear radio frequencies only when they are converted to sound by our radios, televisions, or telephones. If we could hear them this would be a very noisy planet. In the middle of a street in any major city, you would hear thousands of simultaneous telephone conversations, hundreds of radio and television stations. It would probably drive most of us crazy.
Fortunately most of us can’t “hear” radio frequencies, but some people can sense them. And just like in our make-believe world of the deaf, the few individuals who can sense these frequencies can’t sleep, develop headaches, and are under constant stress.

This syndrome is called “electromagnetic hypersensitivity” and some people are gravely affected. Those who see their doctors are often dismissed, given sleeping pills or sent to a psychiatrist. These people are not crazy. They just happen to be more sensitive than the rest of us to electromagnetic noise pollution generated by our technological advances.
Below is a quote from a man in Abbotsford, BC who has some of the classic symptoms of electromagnetic hypersensitivity syndrome.

“We live one property away from a cell phone tower and have another a half mile down the road… I have had strange, unexplained health issues that conventional medical tests cannot solve for three or four years. Along with these, I developed cancer on my right breast when a brown spot that had been there for 35 years suddenly went bad. The following are symptoms that have occurred since these towers were installed and have had no relief to date: headaches, nausea, unsteadiness, pressure in head over eyes, ears, cheeks and back of head. Sometimes blurred vision. General feeling of fatigue and aches for no apparent reason. Have undergone complete blood workup, X-ray, CT Scan. Have tried various alternative medical practices, chiropractic, acupuncture, herbal remedies, exercise, watching diet closer, lose weight and drinking plenty of water. Nothing seems to work. Don’t know if the towers are responsible for the above mentioned, but I do feel somewhat better when I leave the area for a period of time.”

Dr. Gerard Hyland, physicist, says existing safety guidelines for cell phone towers are completely inadequate, since they focus only on the thermal effects of exposure.15 Hyland, twice nominated for the Nobel Prize in Medicine, says existing safety guidelines “afford no protection” against the non-thermal influences. “Quite justifiably, the public remains skeptical of attempts by governments and industry to reassure them that all is well, particularly given the unethical way in which they often operate symbiotically so as to promote their own vested interests.”

The industry lobbied Congress with $39 million in 1996 to ensure passage of a law which essentially gives them the right to place these towers in our neighborhoods, and makes it next to impossible to oppose them based on health reasons. It is no coincidence that EPA funding was also cut in 1996 for electromagnetic radiation health studies. Citizens and communities across the country are angered, and are protesting this imposition of involuntary, 24-hour-a-day microwave exposure, without proven safety levels. As one citizen stated, “There’s no place left to escape.”
The industry lobbied Congress with $39 million in 1996 to pass a law that took away citizen’s rights to oppose cell towers based on health reasons.

Also, once a cell tower is erected, it has proved very difficult to verify the radiation is within legal limits. There are no safety measures in place to ensure that the towers are not emitting higher radiation levels than legally allowed. One frustrated resident finally spent $7,000 purchasing his own equipment to test a cell phone tower near his home, and found it emitting radiation at levels 250% over the legal limit. 16

Property values have also been known to drop once a cell tower is erected, due to the perceived risk of negative health effects. Cellular phone frequencies have also seriously disrupted local emergency and law enforcement radio communications.

“Cell phones emit radio frequency radiation, and the evidence establishes to satisfaction that it puts you at risk of harm when you use the phone,” said Michael Allweiss, a New Orleans attorney, to Network World.

The number of health cases involving cell phones has increased. Chris Newman, a neurologist, blames his brain tumor on his usage of cell phones. Newman has filed a lawsuit against several industry giants, including Motorola and Cell One.

Cell phones studies have linked radio frequency radiation to DNA and chromosome damage that infringe the blood-brain barrier and increase tumor risks, memory loss, and learning difficulties. Some cancer studies have shown correlation that radiation is absorbed by the user’s head, sinking in about one to two inches within the skull, causing some heating of the brain tissue.

“My phone becomes hot on my face and makes my muscles tense up and the muscles start to squeeze on my skull which ends in a tension headache,” said Jeremiah Watson, the Student Body President at SLCC. Watson has been using cell phones for over eight years.

“There’s nothing in the science to suggest there are any adverse health effects with cell phones,” said Jo-Anne Basile, vice president for external and industry relations for the CTIA (Cellular Telecommunication & Internet), to Network World.

Basile said there’s no harm in using cell phones. But the neurologists and other studies that have found opposing evidence that cell phone frequency radiation causes biological effects.

There have been many health complaints on using cell phones, but no one has currently won a case involving cell phones causing brain tumors.

The focus on mobile phones has distracted attention from the cordless phone, which has insinuated itself into positions where they could cause the most harm. Cordless phones are typically placed on the desktop or at the bedside, where people are maximally exposed to radiation intensities hundreds and thousands of times stronger than those from nearby cell phone transmitters sufficient to cause cancers. And they are emitting continuously 24 hours a day. Anecdotal evidence has been emerging of people suffering illnesses such as chronic fatigue and sleep disturbance [19], which are very similar to those from mobile phones. An experiment carried out at Landau University in Germany showed that bees failed to return to the hives when cordless phone base stations are placed in them [7].
Experts demand health warning on cordless phones

The current digital enhanced cordless telephone (DECT) sold in Europe consists of one or more handsets that communicate with a base station via radio waves in the microwave range. The base station emits (broadcasts) microwave radiation at full power pulses100 times a second as long as it is plugged into the wall socket. There have been calls for health warning on DECTs [19, 20], if not an outright ban (see later).

DECTs or similar phones are now widely used throughout the world. Independent measurements have been carried out on the power of the microwaves emitted, the most thorough by Thomas Haumann (Umweltanlaytik und Baubiologie, Essen, Germany) and Peter Sierck (Environmental Testing & Technology, Inc., Encinatas, California, USA) in 2002 [21] They found a maximum power density of over 600 000 mW/m2 at the normal distance of 1 foot (0.3 m) if the base station is placed on an office desk or bedside table. The peak radiation values in the same room are higher than those from any mobile phone transmitters that are located near residential buildings. The background level (in the absence of the DECT base station) was <0.3 mW/m2.

The DFHSS (Digital Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum) phone sold in the US was almost identical to the DECT in Europe. Both are pulsed at 100 Hz. The DFHSS runs on the frequency range of 2 450 MHz and DECT on 1 880 MHz.

The detailed measurements on the DFHSS base station are comparable to those made on DECT base stations in Germany in 1996.

The maximum power density levels in the entire house were also quite high , compared with radiation levels in homes near mobile phone transmission towers, about 10-1 000mW/m2 measured in the UK [23].

These power density levels are legal and considered ‘safe’, according to current regulatory guidelines, which are 10 000 to over 1,000,000 times those recommended by expert bodies on the basis of studies demonstrating biological effects at power densities orders or magnitude below the legal limits.

Many European physicians, environmental professionals and toxicologists signed a Resolution calling for the immediate stop of the DECT technology, which was delivered to the Germany Environment Minister Mr. Jurgen Trittin in October 1999 [24].

DECT microwaves are potentially more harmful than those of other wireless technologies because the microwaves are delivered at maximum power density all the time, even when the phone is not in use; it is pulsed at 100 Hz well within the range of typical biochemical rhythms within the body, and users are typically exposed at maximum levels either throughout their working day or during their sleep. Chronic exposure to such a powerful, pulsed form of the radiation from DECT base stations is more harmful than either acute exposure or exposure to a constant (non-pulsed) radiation. Pulsed radiation, in which the electric component changes from zero to full power almost instantaneously induces a much more powerful magnetic field that can fully penetrate the body (to induce a correspondingly large electric current) than the more slowly changing non-pulsed field.
