A cellular telephone is essentially a radio that sends signals on waves to a base station. The carrier signal generates 2 kinds of radiation fields : a near-field plume and a far-field plume. Living organisms, too, generate electromagnetic fields at the cellular, tissue, organ, and organism level ; this is named the biofield. “The near field plume is the one we are most engaged with. “The more power there’s, the further the plume generates the perilous information-carrying radio waves.”.

“There is a major and inflating body of proof for a link between mobile telephone use and certain brain tumors,” Khurana expounded, a link which will be “definitively proven” inside ten years. A Swedish study in 2006 concluded that folks who used mobile telephones for an hour or more every day had a 240 p.c higher brain cancer risk than non-users.

Tumors were noticeably much more likely to develop on the side of the head where the phone was most frequently used. Electrified in part by such studies, France has advised against mobile telephone use ( particularly in youngsters ), Germany urges folks to reduce their use of mobile handsets, and the ECU Environment Agency has requested minimizing exposure to cellular radiation. Electromagnetic radiation ( EMR ) is understood to immediately heat up the head and brain, and may also cause thermoelectric effects on cells and DNA.

According to Khurana, even bluetooth devices and unshielded headsets just turn the head into an antenna that bombards itself with radiation. “EMR rays typically cause irritation, concentration lapses and in several cases even expansion of cells which cause cancer,” declared Dr Rajeev Ranjan, a New Delhi neurologist. EMR also “affect[s] the DNA and cause[s] issues in cell recovery and cell growth,” announced New Delhi neurologist Anshu Rohatgi. “Malignant brain growth incidence and its associated mortality rate will be noted worldwide to rise inside a decade from now,” Khurana related, “by which time it could be far too late to meaningfully intervene.”.

A new review of more than one hundred studies on the security of mobile telephones has concluded that cellular devices are stood to cause a pandemic of brain tumors which will kill more folk than smoking or asbestos. The review was conducted by doctor Vini Khurana, who has received more than fourteen awards during the past sixteen years, who made the front page worldwide with his cautions.

According to Khurana, research demonstrates that long term use of mobile handsets, more than ten years, can double the danger of contracting brain cancer. Whilst a number of studies have concluded that there’s no such risk, Khurana declared that almost all of those studies only inspected short-term use. But because a brain cancer can take 10 years to develop, studies without a long follow-up period are basically incomprehensible.

Working with colleagues at the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behavior at Radboud University, where he was a Ph.D student at the time, Mazaheri recruited 14 students into his study. While they took an attention-demanding test, Mazaheri recorded their brain activity using MEG — magnetoencephalography — a non-invasive brain-wave recording technique similar to, but more sensitive than electroencephalography (EEG), the technique commonly used in hospitals to detect seizures.

The test, known as the “sustained attention response task,” was developed in the 1990s to evaluate brain damage, ADHD and other neurological disorders. As participants sit at a computer for an hour, a random number from 1 to 9 flashes onto the screen every two seconds. The object is to tap a button as soon as any number except 5 appears. The test is so monotonous, Mazaheri said, that even when a 5 showed up, his subjects spontaneously hit the button an average of 40 percent of the time.

By analyzing the recorded MEG data, the research team found that about a second before these errors were committed, brain waves in two regions were stronger than when the subjects correctly refrained from hitting the button. In the back of the head (the occipital region), alpha wave activity was about 25 percent stronger, and in the middle region, the sensorimotor cortex, there was a corresponding increase in the brain’s mu wave activity.

During 1975, Robert Bryden, who lives at 140 Water Street, began to observe drastic warping and blurring of his television picture, and to experience pain and swelling in his eyes; his wife was suffering from swelling of the face and numbness and nerve tingling in one of her arms. Bry¬den then wrote more than a dozen letters of complaint to Guilford and Connecticut officials; to the Federal Commu¬nications Commission, in Washington, D.C.; to the repre¬sentative for his congressional district; and to Senator Abraham Ribicoff. As a result of requests from the F.C.C., whose officials clearly believed that power lines were creating the interference, Connecticut Light & Power on several occasions sent representatives to Bryden’s neigh¬borhood to investigate the problem.

The Bioinitiative Group has produced a report called: A Rationale for a Biologically-based Public Exposure Standard for Electromagnetic Fields (ELF and RF ((Radio Frequency))). In that report, evidence for childhood leukemia caused by exposure to power lines is addressed as well as the issue of gliomas and acoustic neuromas caused by cell phone and cordless phone use. They state, In summary we conclude that our review yielded a consistent pattern of an increased risk for acoustic neuroma and glioma after 10 (or more) years mobile phone use. We conclude that (the) current
standard for exposure to microwaves during mobile phone use is not safe for long-term brain tumor risk and needs to be revised.

The report further states, The existing FCC and international limits for public and occupational exposure to electromagnetic fields and radiofrequency radiation are not protective of public health. New biologically based public and occupational exposures are recommended to address bioeffects and potential adverse health effects of chronic exposure. These effects are now widely reported to occur at exposure levels
significantly below most current national and international limits.

It therefore behests our scientific societies to address this issue. There is one caveat; that is, only one group, Hardell et al, have carried out actual studies pertaining to the issue and found a clear relationship between brain tumors and ELF. No other long-term studies have been carried out; Dr Khurana’s warning is based on a review of literature only. It seems that a cooperative effort by both the scientific community and state governing bodies will be needed. Some spearhead is now necessary in view of the magnitude and seriousness of the situation.

In March of this year, Dr Vini G. Khurana, an Australian Neurosurgeon, made news headlines declaring that, based on his research of the literature, the long-term use of cell phones was leading to brain tumors and was more dangerous to health than smoking cigarettes.

The relationship between exposure to electromagnetic fields (ELFs) and brain tumor incidence has long been a subject of concern and research in the neurosciences and oncology. However, until this last year, most studies have failed to show a clear relationship between cell phone use and brain tumors.

Then in April of 2007, Lennart Hardell, a professor of oncology and cancer epidemiology at the University Hospital in Orebro, Sweden, along with 4 other authors published an article using case-controlled and cohort studies that clearly demonstrates that the use of cell phones for 10 years or more is associated with an increased risk for the development of glioma and acoustic neuroma ipsilateral to the side where the phone was used.

Subsequently, in April of this year, the same authors published a
meta-analysis of several studies on the topic and also concluded that there is a positive relationship between long-term cell phone use and ipsilateralglioma and acoustic neuroma.

Needless to say, such findings are alarming. Cell phones are ubiquitous in our society, and the numbers and use of such devices have increased exponentially since being introduced in the mid-1980s. Furthermore, cell phone use by teenagers and even preteens has also grown to become common place.

It’s supposed to be the mother of all studies into cellphones and their potential link to head cancers, a definitive report that the multibillion-dollar wireless industry has partially funded.

But the published analysis of the 13-country Interphone study is two years late and likely to be delayed further as the more than 50 scientists involved bicker over how to interpret the results, knowing full well that any hint at health risks would have a profound impact on the industry.

The stakes are high, and the steps toward the final outcome are being closely watched. More than three billion people around the world use a cellphone, and while sales next year are expected to fall slightly amid tough economic times, wireless gadgets like the BlackBerry and iPhone are woven into the fabric of our daily lives.

Participating countries are free to publish their individual national results, and eight countries have.

Among Nordic countries, there are already hints that cellphone use for 10 years or longer increases the risk of developing glioma and acoustic neurinoma tumours on the side of the head where a handset is held.

It’s far from definitive, but suggestive enough to spark closer scrutiny from some scientific corners. Growing impatient and citing the public’s right to get “the whole pattern,” a group of scientists calling themselves The BioInitiative Working Group are urging the remaining five countries including Canada to hand over their results “without further delay.”

“There is a lot of data that’s been obtained, but not all of it, and the people sitting on it are being obstructionists for a particular reason,” said Dr. Martin Blank, a professor of cellular biophysics at Columbia University in New York City and one of 11 scientists who signed a letter earlier this month asking for speedy release of the data.

LOS ANGELES Recent satellite observations have revealed the largest breach yet seen in the magnetic field that protects Earth from most of the sun’s violent blasts, researchers reported Tuesday. The discovery was made last summer by Themis, a fleet of five small NASA satellites.
Scientists have long known that the Earth’s magnetic field, which guards against severe space weather, is similar to a drafty old house that sometimes lets in violent eruptions of charged particles from the sun. Such a breach can cause brilliant auroras or disrupt satellite and ground communications.

Observations from Themis show the Earth’s magnetic field occasionally develops two cracks, allowing solar wind — a stream of charged particles spewing from the sun at 1 million mph — to penetrate the Earth’s upper atmosphere.

Last summer, Themis calculated a layer of solar particles to be at least 4,000 miles thick in the outermost part of the Earth’s magnetosphere, the largest tear of the protective shield found so far.
“It was growing rather fast,” Themis scientist Marit Oieroset of the University of California, Berkeley told an American Geophysical Union meeting in San Francisco.

Such breaches are temporary, and the one observed last year lasted about an hour, Oieroset said.
Solar flares are a potential danger to astronauts in orbit but generally are not a risk to people on the surface of the Earth.

The research was funded by NASA and the National Science Foundation.
Scientists initially believed the greatest solar breach occured when the Earth’s and sun’s magnetic fields are pointed in opposite directions. But data from Themis found the opposite to be true. Twenty times more solar wind passed into the Earth’s protective shield when the magnetic fields were aligned, Oieroset said.

In the United Kingdom alone around 16 million people regularly use mobiles.

The Government-backed National Radiological Protection Board maintains mobile phone radiation levels are well within safety limits.

But other studies have already shown links between the phones and long-term memory loss, high blood pressure and premature ageing.

The phones have also been linked to cancer, leukaemia, multiple sclerosis and Alzeimers disease.

The Government is set to announce further funds for research into possible health affects of mobiles early next year.
