The modern handheld cell phone is a staple of globalized twenty-first century life—and it’s not hard to understand why. It’s a technological wonder, a marvel of electronic miniaturization and digital engineering, and a powerful tool of communication and entertainment whose convenience can’t be beat. With a typical cell phone we can not only send and receive calls but also text messages and emails; we can take pictures, make audio recordings, store textual information, listen to music, access the Internet (and all that that entails), watch videos, read e-books, play games—the capabilities are endless. Cell phones allow us to stay connected like nothing else. Who ever thought this nifty little multi-purpose gadget would pose a threat to the environment?

It’s unfortunate, but true: Within just the last ten years, the increasingly widespread and heavy global use of cell phones has placed the world’s honeybee population at risk. We are literally buzzing the bees out of existence. Meanwhile, the global pace of construction of new cell phone towers continues unabated, and worldwide cell phone transmissions continue increasing by the day, filling the Earth’s atmosphere with more and more artificial radio waves. If this trend continues into the next few years, we can expect further drastic reductions in the global honeybee population.

What would happen if honeybees became extinct? We would lose a lot more than just good-tasting natural honey. Honeybees play a critical role in the world’s food chain: they pollinate 75 percent of all the crops consumed by humans, many of which are also consumed by animals. Thus the extinction of honeybees would precipitate a global food crisis of almost unthinkable proportions. I don’t think any of us want to see that happen! Human survival is dependent on the survival of honeybees.

Given the enormity of the stakes involved, it is imperative that we take decisive measures soon to protect the endangered honeybees. This is not like trying to save the Pyrenean Ibex, the Golden Toad, the Javan Tiger, or the Alaotra Grebe (a bird of Madagascar that was officially declared extinct last year). All of these animal species have become extinct since the conservation movement began, but due to their isolated habitats and limited distribution, their extinction had little if any impact on the overall global food chain. The extinction of the honeybee would be an entirely different matter. Because of its worldwide distribution and the key role this little insect plays in crop growth, its demise would be catastrophic for a large percentage of life on earth.

So what can we do to save the honeybees? Here are a few ideas:
1) Spread the word. Tell everyone you know about what you’ve learned in this article. The more people who know about it, the better.
2) Use your cell phone less. Keep it turned off most of the time if you can. Note that you don’t have to make a call to send destructive radiation through the air—just turning the unit on will do that.
3) Buy land phones, which don’t emit harmful radio waves, for your home and office, and use your cell phone for calls only when away from those places. A cordless land phone offers the best of both worlds—it allows more mobility than a traditional corded land telephone but emits less harmful radiation than a cell phone.
4) At the local level, cities, counties and states could pass ordinances and laws preventing the construction of additional cell phone towers in certain areas (as long as this does not conflict with federal law).
5) Since honeybees continue to flourish in areas without cell phone service, it would make common sense for the governments of individual countries (especially in the United States and Europe) to review their existing communications policies and enact stricter nationwide regulations for cell phone transmissions.
6) Since more than 9 in 10 Americans now own cell phones (See “List of countries by number of cell phones in use,” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_number_of_mobile_phones_in_use), a permanent nationwide moratorium on the construction of new cell phone towers should be seriously considered.

7) Our federal government could build on the model of the National Radio Quiet Zone, a 13,000-square-mile area straddling the Virginia-West Virginia border that was set aside in 1958 to protect the National Radio Astronomy Observatory from unwanted manmade radio interference. Within this zone, artificial radio transmissions, including cell phone services, are limited but not entirely eliminated. Similar protected zones could be established in America’s sprawling, thinly-populated agricultural regions (such as in the middle states and parts of California) where cell phone services are less in demand and where honeybees are especially needed to pollinate the crops that feed much of the world.

Such efforts to curtail cell phone transmissions, for the good of honeybees and for our own good, will likely be met with powerful opposition from the big cell phone companies like AT&T and Verizon. These huge businesses make a killing on cell phones, netting hundreds of billions of dollars annually, so their multibillionaire kings will not take kindly the least threat to the continued expansion of their global empire. They don’t really care what happens to the bees (or to us) as long as they can keep their annual profits swelling.

Thus they’ll conveniently deny any connection between cell phone use and declining bee rates (just as they denied that there was any connection between cell phone use and brain cancer). But such opposition shouldn’t discourage us—because denying an inconvenient truth doesn’t make it go away.

Have you heard the news? In just the last ten years or so, the world’s honeybee population has taken a huge dive—and nobody seems to know why. I found this out myself recently by reading an article called “Bees Feel the Sting: The buzz on the worldwide decline in honeybee populations,” which appeared as the lead story in the September/October 2011 issue of Science Illustrated. According to this article, a group of French biologists is attaching tiny microchips to honeybees to track their daily behavior patterns in an effort to learn what’s killing them. Suspected causes of the unprecedented global honeybee dieoff include pests, predators, disease, pesticide sprays, climate change, and mobile phones. One single factor can be enough to do the bees in, as researcher Cedric Alaux of the Laboratoire Biologie et Protection de l’abeille admitted to Science Illustrated: “We cannot rule out that there is one single factor behind it all that influences the bees in a negative way.”

To identify that factor, the key question we should ask is: What on earth has changed so drastically in the last ten years that would cause billions of honeybees to perish? There has been no drastic change in nature or the global environment that can adequately explain this occurrence. Honeybee pests and predators have been around for centuries, and although their numbers have fluctuated, their populations have not exploded recently as far as I know. Diseases have similarly come and gone. Thus we can reasonably rule out any natural causes for the world’s honeybee population plunge, and it makes sense to look for the culprit among possible artificial (i.e. manmade) causes. Although pesticide sprays have been in use for decades, their worldwide use has not increased dramatically in recent years; if anything, it has declined as the popularity of organic farming continues to grow.

The only other suspected manmade cause of the honeybees’ death is mobile phones (i.e. cell phones)—or, more precisely, the radio waves emitted by cell phones. Here we’re on to something, because in the last ten years the world’s use of cell phones has exploded dramatically, and an ever-growing global network of cell phone transmitter towers established to meet this demand now continuously fills much of the Earth’s air with a thick invisible web of electromagnetic radiation. Moreover, the negative effects of this artificial radiation on living organisms are already well known and documented by scientists. (Take, for example, the well-established link between increased cell phone use and increased rates of human brain cancer.) Furthermore, the steepest declines in honeybee populations have been observed in the United States and Europe—where cell phone use is greater than anywhere else in the world.
Nothing matches the worldwide decline in honeybee population like the worldwide increase in cell phone transmissions during the same time frame. Thus, it is reasonable to draw a link between the two and theorize that the former is the main cause of the latter.

But, some might say, the basis for this supposed theory is rather circumstantial. Is there any real, convincing evidence for it? Yes, there is. In a study conducted last year, researchers at Panjab University in Chandigarh, India fitted cell phones to a beehive and activated them twice a day for 15 minutes each. Within three months, honey production had ceased, the queen laid half as many eggs, and the hive population had fallen significantly. But the effect of cell phone towers on bees is even more drastic than that of individual phones. Barbara Hughes, a columnist for the Catholic Virginian who has been visiting the Franciscan monastery at Mission San Luis Rey in California, recently visited a Benedictine abbey near the mission. She related the following in the August 22, 2011 edition of the paper:
One of the monks, who has been a bee keeper at the Abbey for 40 years, explained how until numerous cell phone towers were constructed on the back of their property, he had been collecting 100 gallons of honey a week.

But as the use of cell phones expanded, all of his bees died within a few weeks until he discovered a small area near the base of the hill where he could not get cell phone service. Once he moved his hives to that particular area, the bees once again began to thrive and reproduce.

This anecdote is a graphic example of the danger that cell phone radiation poses to honeybees. According to researchers such as Milt Bowling, the radiation is interfering with the bees’ built-in navigational systems, disorienting them and preventing them from finding their way back to their hives. The typical cell phone transmitter tower is a veritable beehive of electromagnetic activity. At any given moment it can be sending and receiving the radio transmissions of 10 to 25 different phone calls. A whole row of cell phone towers can process thousands of calls simultaneously. Try to imagine what all the radio waves from all the towers just in your local area would look like, filling the air all around you. If we had the capability to see radio waves, we would be blown away. Thus cell phone towers pose a much more serious threat to living organisms than individual cell phones because they emit much more concentrated doses of radiation. When we consider that the radiation of a single cell phone can cause brain cancer in a human being at an early age, it’s not difficult to imagine the deadly effect that thousands of times that radiation would have on a much smaller living creature.

In fact, the gradual, slight decline in world honeybee populations observed over the course of the twentieth century (which preceded the current precipitous decline) was probably due to the gradual establishment of radio stations and transmitters all over the world. Moreover, it is possible that radio waves crisscrossing our atmosphere from Earth-orbiting communications satellites as well as from more recently developed GPS satellites, satellite radio systems, and especially wireless Internet systems, all play minor contributing roles in the current honeybee population crisis. The lesson to be learned from this is that radio waves kill bees—and the world’s more than five billion cell phones combined generate more artificial radio emissions by far than all other currently operating high-tech inventions on Earth put together. Are you sure? Believe it or not, cell phones are a security risk. Not that you can possibly live without talking to your friends and playing Tetris while listening to MP3s. But yes, cell phones are a risk. Consider 5 worst case scenarios and better yet, the alternative to panicking over the situation.

1. Stolen Sidekick

So your cell phone has been stolen! Or lost, more likely. Most people simply take lost cell phones they find rather than pickpocketing them. If you have a special model, such as a Palm Treo, Razr Killer or T-Mobile Sidekick then obviously unscrupulous individuals will want to take your phone and listen to their own MP3s. The first step is to call your provider and let them know the phone has been lost. Ask them to disable any outgoing calls. Also ask about a replacement phone. Some service providers offer a replacement phone depending on the selected service plans. (Be sure that, if you have replacement phone coverage, that they are replacing your phone with a brand new one, not a refurbished one.)

2. Cell Phones In School

Misbehaving in school is a national pastime. Naturally children or teenagers with cell phones are bound to abuse their privileges sooner or later. One risk is that they get caught playing during the assignment and their luxury Sony/Ericsson or Motorola phone gets confiscated. There are also concerns for cell phone theft and robbery on school grounds. Many cell phones come with security devices or protective accessories to help people of ages keep their phones functioning and prevent loss or damage.

3. Cell Phones and Driving

Did you know that some politicians want to ban cell phone use while driving? While it’s debatable if this should take place, it is true that talking on a cell phone will hinder your ability to drive. Some people claim that cell phones could contribute to bad health. Some scientists even speculate that rare types of cancerous tumors could develop from heavy cellular use. If sure evidence of mutation or disease comes to light, surely cell phones would be done away with, much the same way American has turned its back on tobacco products.

5. Cell Phones Without Plans

Worst case scenario! A cell phone that doesn’t work for you! Don’t panic. There are several big wireless providers from Verizon to Motorola Razr and they are generously willing to accept your money. Seriously, whether you want low monthly payments with just emergency chat time, or anytime anywhere minutes at a set monthly price, there’s a plan for you. If there are cell phones for soldiers stationed halfway across the globe, then there’s a plan for you. Many organizations including the cell phone industry often downplay the risk of cell phone radiation to the brain. Results from short-term studies were used to convince consumers that use of a cell phone is not associated with brain tumors or cancer, which only develop decades after exposure.

During the first 15 minutes, nothing changed. After 25 minutes, however, the egg shell started to become hot and at 40 minutes, the surface of the egg became hard and bristled. Researchers found the protein in the egg had become solid although the egg yolk was still in liquid form. After 65 minutes, the whole egg was well cooked.
The study shows how scary cell phone radiation is. People should try to avoid use of cell phones. Although so far no one has proved the radiation from cell phones can cause something clinically significant. By the same token, there has been no one who can disprove the existence of such a risk.

Children should be forbidden from cell phone use because they still grow their brains and are particularly vulnerable to radiation.

I can’t tell you that cell phones are dangerous, but I can tell you that I’m not sure they’re safe.” – Devra Davis
As developments in cell phone technology leap forward, the studies of potential health impacts associated with cellphone use present confusing and inconclusive results. And yet the entrenchment of cell phone use in our daily lives makes it more difficult to function without these wireless devices.

Dr. Devra Davis, an epidemiologist and toxicologist, believes that potential risks associated with cellphone use are being downplayed, similar to the way the hazards of cigarette smoke and toxic chemicals in the home were disregarded for years. Her recent book, Disconnect – the truth about cell phone radiation, investigates the data on phones and cancer, as well as the wireless industry’s efforts to stave off regulation.

Davis cites evidence of studies, some decades old, showing that the radio-frequency radiation used by cell phones could indeed have biological effects — enough to damage DNA and potentially contribute to brain tumors. She found that other countries — like France and Israel — had already acted, discouraging the use of phones by children and even putting warning signs on handsets. She found evidence of dramatic increases in certain kinds of brain tumors among unusually young patients who were heavy users of cellphones.

According to Dr. Davis, the following tips may help mitigate potential harm from cell phone use:
1.Children and youth under 20 shouldn’t use cell or wireless phones except in emergencies.
2.Keep cell phones turned off unless absolutely necessary. When they are on, don’t carry them in your pocket or against your body. Keep the back of the phone, where the antenna is, facing away from your body.
3.Use a headset or wireless headphone with low power. This removes the phone from right beside your brain.
4.Use your phone only when/where the signal is good. In marginal areas, it steps up its power output, so you are exposed to more radiation.
5.Text rather than talk. It uses less power and exposes you less. If you need to talk, use your phone on speaker, and keep it further from your head. If you place it on your lap, use a barrier (like a book) between your phone and your body.
6.Pregnant women should keep cell and wireless phones away from their abdomen, and everyone should keep cell and wireless phones away from babies, children and youth.

Whenever possible, Dr. Davis advises people to use a land-line for phone communications. Land lines work without emitting radiation, and will continue to work when the power goes out.
Until the safety of cellphone use is established conclusively, it seems the best approach for users is to err on the side of caution. The tips outlined above are practical and easy to implement, while enabling users to continue to enjoy the benefits of wireless communication.

PUNE: The rapid growth of the cellphone industry in India has fuelled haphazard building of base stations without prior planning or regulation, which is impacting the birds and bees biologically, an experts’ committee has found. The panel has formulated guidelines to check their installation in the country.

Nearly 800 million Indians have cellphones, making it the second largest cellphone-subscriber population in the world after China. A 13-member committee was set up by the union ministry of environment and forests in August 2010 to assess the possible impacts of growth of these base stations on wildlife. The members included scientist BC Choudhary of the Wildlife Institute of India, Sainudeen Pattazhy associate professor in S N College, Kerala and Asad Rahmani, director of Bombay Natural History Society. “Well-designed long-term impact assessment studies would be required to monitor the impact of ever-increasing intensities of electro magnetic radiation on our biological environment,” Rahmani said .
At present, restrictions on the placement of communication towers are related to human habitation and impact on human health is looked at. However, no cumulative study is carried out on the impact of flora and fauna, Choudhary told TOI. “The committee has suggested restrictions of cellphone towers, particularly in wildlife-rich areas where there are more threatened species,” he said.

The committee recommended that EMF be recognised as a pollutant and regular auditing be conducted in urban localities, educational, hospital, industrial, residential and recreational premises and around the protected areas and ecologically sensitive areas. A law, the experts suggested, that protects urban flora and fauna from such radiation is necessary as conservation issues in urban areas are different from forested or wildlife habitats.
It also sought bold signs and messages on the dangers of cellphone towers and radiation be displayed in and around the structures where the base stations are erected. The panel also recommended the locations of cellphone and other EMF radiating towers along with their frequencies be available on public domain to help monitor the population of birds and bees.

Public consultation should be mandatory before installation of cellphones towers in any area and the forest department should be consulted before installation of cellphone towers near protected areas and zoos, the panel suggested. New towers should not be permitted within a radius of one km of existing towers and if built they must rise above 80 ft and not exceed 199 ft to avoid the requirement for aviation safety lighting.

There must be strict control over installation of cellphone towers near wildlife protected areas, Important Bird Areas, Ramsar sites, turtle breeding areas, bee colonies, zoos. Security lighting for on-ground facilities should be minimized and point downwards or be down-shielded to avoid bird hits, the study said.

Studies in India show that the population of house sparrows was disappearing from areas with high electromagnetic waves arising out of increased number of cellphones in Nagpur, Bhopal, Jabalpur, Ujjain, Gwaliar, Chhindwara, Indore and Betul. The report, quoting a study by the Centre for Environment and Vocational Studies of Punjab University, said when 50 eggs of the house sparrow were exposed to EMR for durations between five and 30 minutes, all the embryos were found damaged.

The government must formulate rules to prevent unscientific proliferation of cellphone towers across the country, Pattazhy said. In India, studies conducted by him proved that cellphones with a frequency of 900 MHz for 10 minutes kept in the beehives keep worker bees away. “There is a drastic decrease in the egg production of the queen bees. It fell to 100 eggs a day compared to 350 eggs per day in the control colonies,” he said.

Local councillors and residents’ groups are questioning the safety and location of cellphone towers in the Bayview Glen area following a proposal from Bell Mobility to erect another tower near Green Lane and Guardsman Road.

“I hope it doesn’t end up going up,” said Howard Shore, Ward 2 councillor. “The one on Bayview Avenue went up without any consultation with the community. These towers are monstrosities.”
Shore said the cell tower, currently on the northeast corner of Bayview Avenue near Laureleaf Road, is just under the maximum height limitations, and that Town of Markham staff were previously unaware of Bell Mobility’s plans to erect a new one.

Ultimately, the cellphone towers’ size is regulated by a federal agency, Industry Canada, while Health Canada determines their proximity to residential communities. “We’ve been told by the government that there are no health concerns,” said Toinette Bezant, a spokesperson from the Bayview Glen Residents’ Association. “But the World Health Organization classifies radio frequencies as carcinogenic. They say it’s possible, but unlikely, so it’s still a bit of a grey area.” Bezant named nearby schools and soccer fields as her main concern, and wants Bell Mobility to consult with the community before the new towers are erected.

Coun. Shore approached Bell Mobility with an alternative solution, citing a tower at a nearby church, and suggested installing antennas above a condominium tower. “The provider claims they need a certain height,” Shore said. “You don’t need the whole rocket ship, you just need the antenna,” he also said. “If there’s zero health issues and zero concerns, then why do they resist the alternative?” Shore added that after he approached Industry Canada, he was told that “reasonable and relevant concerns exclude health-related issues.”A Bell Mobility spokesperson said they comply with regulations from Industry Canada.
