Havas showed a brief film on Mountainview School in Collingwood, Canada, where students spoke of headaches, dizziness, displacement and the inability to concentrate after Wi-Fi technology was installed in their school. These students had never experienced the symptoms before wireless networking was installed, and did not have these symptoms after leaving campus.

“Children absorb more energy, have weaker immunes systems and grow more rapidly than adults,” Havas said. “This makes them more susceptible to developing problems from all of this exposure. It is imperative that we get cell phone antennas and Wi-Fi out of our schools.”

Havas was joined by Elizabeth Kelley, who spoke about the implications of new cell phone “right-to-know” legislation in San Francisco, and proposed cell phone research and labeling legislation in Congress.

Havas and Kelley answered questions from residents after their presentations. The talk was scheduled for 8 to 9 p.m., but Havas and Kelley stayed past 10:30 p.m. to answer questions from the audience.

“You can be sure that the cell phone industry is just as motivated to keep you in the dark about the dangers of electromagnetic radiation,” Havas said, likening telecommunication companies to the tobacco industry. “One hundred years from now, society is going to look back at the dangers of this technology and say, ‘What were those people thinking?

The 2009 special EMF issue of the Journal of Pathophysiology, which contains over a dozen different studies on the health effects of electromagnetic fields and wireless technology

In addition, a review of 11 long-term epidemiologic studies published in the journal Surgical Neurology revealed that using a cell phone for 10 or more years approximately doubles the risk of being diagnosed with a brain tumor on the same side of the head where the cell phone is typically held.

Another noted brain cancer authority, Australian Dr Vini Gautam Khurana, published a paper in 2008 titled: Mobile Phones and Brain Tumors, which also covers more than 100 sources of recent medical and scientific literature on this topic.

According to Dr. Carlo, there is no safe level for this radiation – no acceptable threshold. We are all being affected not only by personal cell phone usage, but also as by-standers subject to radiation from nearby cell phone users and cell phone antennas. In large metropolitan areas there is no break from this assault. The effect will be devastating as reflected in the ever-increasing level of electromagnetic allergies.

James Oschman, PhD, describes the process as the cell communication responding as semiconductors, more specifically, piezoelectric devices, that reach resonance with the external vibration (see Section E.2).

In summary, radio frequency radiation as encountered in everyday life is less often critical because of its level of power density, but rather because of its ELF modulation. However, in some rare circumstances, the power density is sufficiently high to cause heating of local body tissues, as can be the case while using a cellular phone held near the head.

At about 25,000,000 W/m2 human thermoregulation kicks in. From 500,000,000 W/m2 birth defects and other genetic disorders are to be expected; 2,000,000,000 W/m2 are deadly. Neurological disorders can be demonstrated from (1,000 W/m2) and changes in the EEG were observed with pulse-modulated HF radiation as low as 1,000,000,000 W/m2 . Changes in the growth of yeast cultures can be observed from 100 W/m2.

George Carlo observed biological effect from the “ pulsed” signal is the impact to the vibratory protein receptors within the cell wall that control the exchange of nutrients and toxins into and out of the cell. As the information-carrying radio wave comes in the vicinity of the cell, the vibration protein recognizes it within milliseconds. But because in the evolution of man there are no information carrying radio waves – they are not natural – the body interprets the information-carrying radio wave as a foreign invader.

When that interpretation happens, a message goes inside the cell that says: “We are under siege; we need to protect ourselves.” First, the active transport channels, which are the avenues where nutrients pass into the cell and waste products pass out, begin to close down. As the active transport channels begin to close down, you have a circumstance where nutrients that are in the river between the cells are not able to get into the cell. When nutrients cannot get into the cell, the cell becomes nutrient and energy deficient. An energy deficient cell is not able to communicate with surrounding cells, so that you have a disruption in what we call intercellular communication. Ionic intercellular communication is also impacted – causing confusion within the cells as to how and when to divide.

At present the scientific establishment acknowledges mainly biological effects of HF radiation, which can be explained through power density levels absorbed by the human body. A worldwide recognized, basic unit for the description of thermal effects is referred to as the specific absorption rate (SAR), which is given in watt per kilogram (W/kg). The SAR, however, only quantifies the portion of the HF energy that was absorbed as thermal energy. In 1990, IEEE 54 animal and cell research detected adverse biological effects at 4W/kg. Adopting a safety factor of 50, the SAR level has been set to 0.8W/kg average over the entire body for periods of 15-30minutes. However, since cell phone users only partially expose their body – the level for mobile phones was set 20 times higher than this, or 1.6W/kg.

In tissues, well supplied with blood, the body temperature is raised on average by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius at 100,000,000 W/cm 2, in tissues with poor blood circulation much lower power intensities can cause heating. Since the human eye has a particularly poor blood supply, damage can be expected at intensities as low as 100,000 to 500,000 W/m2. In animal experiments it could be demonstrated that under microwave exposure of 1,000,000 W/m2.

Principle of microwave heating is similar to that of a microwave oven where the water in the food content is heated first. For this study, the researchers evaluated semen samples from healthy donors with no history of recent illnesses. Each sample was divided into two equal fractions, which were placed in separate temperature-controlled rooms. One of the sub-samples was incubated under a laptop connected to the Internet, to replicate the conditions that occur when a man places the computer on his lap.

“After four hours of incubation of sperm under the two different conditions, we found that in the sample exposed to the laptop, a large percentage of the sperm cells were affected,”

said Dr. Avendaño to “La Voz”. The investigator concludes that their study shows that exposure of sperm to the radiation from the device did not kill the sperm cells, but affected their motility. Further, by evaluating the sperm cells’ DNA integrity, they found that there was a significant difference between both sub-samples:

“The fraction exposed to radiation had a significant increase in sperm cells with fragmented (broken) DNA,”

said Avendaño.
The findings are important because previous studies on reproductive medicine have shown that some of the problems in fertilization and embryonic development are caused by damage in the DNA molecules of the sperm.

Buenos Aires – Argentine researchers have found that radiation emitted by an Internet-connected computer resting on the user’s legs may affect male fertility by reducing sperm motility and fragmenting DNA.

The research, first in the world on the subject, was carried out by experts from Nascentis, a reproductive medicine center located in Córdoba, Argentina. The results of the study will be presented at the 66 Congress of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) taking place in October in Denver, USA.

The researchers (led by Conrado Avendaño, a biochemist specializing in andrology, in collaboration with Ariela Mata, reproductive biology specialist and César Sánchez Sarmiento, director of the medical center, among others) demonstrated that the motility of spermatozoa is impaired when these cells are exposed to the radiation from laptops, according to a report published in the Córdoba newspaper “La Voz” (in Spanish).

Cordless telephones emit as much radiation as cell phones, the Health Ministry stated yesterday in a warning to the general public.

The radiation emitted by cordless phones is non-ionizing, the same as cell phones. Still, the ministry says it’s better to use regular landline telephones.

Non-ionizing radiation is a form of electromagnetic radiation that does not possess enough energy to cause ionization in matter, the Environmental Protection Ministry explains. Its wide spectrum includes ultra-violet light, visible light, infrared radiation, radio frequency and more.

“Information passes through the base unit and the handset [the mobile unit - the actual phone] in the form of radio waves,” the ministry explains.

While studies into the potential hazards of cell-phone use are ongoing, on its website the Health Ministry counsels the public to err on the side of caution.

It also offers practical suggestions for careful use of cordless phones, but first and foremost advises that whenever possible – both at home and at work – use regular phones instead.
