We will concentrate on the latter in this esay – UNCONTROLLED RF EXPOSURE. RF
signals are without a doubt an invisible form of pollution. Most people see a smokestack smoking and scream “OH ! Look at that pollution !” But as we will see, this is not really the most immediate, serious health hazard. What IS known about RF, is that unhealthy effects from it are related to an almost infinte combination of each of the five following factors:

1. FREQUENCY – Certain frequencies are absorbed in the body more than others. For example, the new riot control weapons the Pentagon have operates in the Super-High Frequency (SHF) region. This frequency is about 15 times higher than a conventional microwave oven. Although SHF is not absorbed into the skin, it boils perspiration on the skin causing pain.

2. DURATION – How long you are exposed to the radiation, or how long the transmitter is “on.”

3. DISTANCE – How close you are to the antenna. Energy levels decrease with the square of the distance.

4. POWER LEVEL – What the strength of the signal is. This is measured in microwatts, milliwatts and watts. One microwatt is a millionth of a watt, One milliwatt is one-thousandth of a watt. For example, 1,000 milliwatts is one watt.

Cell phone power levels are often in the 100 milliwatt to 4 watt class. In the past, older bag type cell phones people carried around, were up near 4 watts of power. Getting a strong signal was no problem. Today’s pocket cell phones are in the 100 milliwatt area. Reducing the power goes with size reduction and a smaller battery. This also reduces cell size, which actually is beneficial
as I’ll explain latter.

5. SUSCEPTABILITY – Like tobacco smoke, you cannot tell if you will or will not become ill from RF exposure. But RF heating of body tissues and possible DNA alteration (mutation) happens to 100% of the people exposed to RF. The amount of heating is determined by a combination of the four factors above. The immune system is responsible for cleaning up mutant DNA. But can the immune system clean it out all the defective DNA and dead cells, and do this indefinitely ? Modern medical science knows there are limits to how much of an assault on the body the immune system can deal with.

For our European friends, please note that all the frequencies referenced below are for the American and Canadian radio spectrum. The lowest frequencies are radio waves, that are actually the same as frequencies as the audio sound which comes out of your speakers. This called VLF, or Very Low Frequency. These waves have wavelengths measured in thousands of miles. They pass through the body without damage.

Commercial AM radio signals, use waves that are also quite long and pass through the body with relative ease. These are also waves, whose wavelengths are measured in hundreds of feet. Shortwave signals are also very long, and this part of the spectrum reaches up to a part of the miltary band, located below TV channel 2.

Decades ago, people could go to a doctor for aches and pains and be treated with a Diathermy machine. This machine was essentially a shortwave radio transmitter, and operated with a curved antenna that fits the human body. When placed against the skin, the antenna radiated energy that was absorbed deep in the body’s tissues. A sufficient power level of RF energy will cause currents of electricity to flow in these tissues, thereby creating warmth. These machines are probably outlawed by now and died a quiet death in America. RF energy causes molecules to collide with one another creating heat. This occurs in tisuues like muscles, as well as blood.

FM stations (located in the radio band near TV channel 6) and over the air television channels 2 through 13 are all in the VHF band. These signals can also pass through the human body without harm. These waves are measured in several feet.
When you look at any TV antenna, multiply the width of the antenna by four, and that will be the wavelength of the wave from the TV transmitter. Hence the term 1/4 wavelength, which is a design rule for most antennas.

Television channels 14 through 83 are in the UHF region. Channel 83 is actually just below analog cell phone frequencies. Progammable police scanners scan police channels that are very close to cell phone frequencies.

The Federal Communications Commission sets the acceptable U.S. radiation standards for cellphones. The effects of the radiation depend on the rate at which energy is absorbed by a mass of tissue. This is called as the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) and measured in watts per kilogram (W/kg). Most handset makers use private certification companies to test the SAR on their devices.

Based on a recommendation from industry group, IEEE, the FCC limits SAR levels for partial-body exposure (including head) to up to 1.6 W/kg, and whole body exposure to up to 0.08 W/kg. For hands, wrists, feet, and ankles, the limit is up to 4 W/kg, averaged over 10 grams of tissue.

In general, the lower the SAR the better the phone, from a potential health hazard point of view. For instance, Apple’s iPhone 3G has a maximum SAR of 1.39 W/kg when held at the ear. Compare that to the 1.19 W/kg SAR for the iPhone 3G S.

The best phone on EWG’s list, the Samsung Impression, has a maximum radiation of just 0.35 W/kg.

But FCC’s current standards are inadequate, says EWG. FCC standards allow 20 times more radiation to reach the head than the rest of the body, says an EWG representative, and they don’t provide an adequate margin of safety for cell phone radiation exposure.

Researchers are divided on whether radiation from cellphones pose health risks or not. Now, one nonprofit organization adds some hard data to the argument: the radiation emission profiles of more than 1,200 cell phone models. The data won’t resolve the debate, but does give concrete information to consumers to help them make their buying decisions.

American cellphone radiation standards don’t make enough of an allowance for safety and ignore the impact of electromagnetic radiation on children, says the Environmental Working Group, which analyzed the radiation emissions from 1,268 cellphones. The group also looked at a number of recent research studies and supporting documentation from the handset makers to arrive at its conclusions.

“We think that based on current standards there’s increased risk of developing brain tumors in long term users — people who have used cellphones for more than 10 years — from radiation in cellphones,” says Olga Naidenko, a senior scientist at EWG, who worked on the report for about 10 months.

In the year 2000, a Maryland doctor, Chris Newman, filed an $800 million lawsuit against Motorola and Verizon. He claims using his cellular phone caused his brain cancer. That striking story, and other recent events, suggest that the rules are changing in the cellular world. Will public pressure force cell phone makers to do something about their phone’s radiation?
Ironically, the cell phone radiations issue has started exactly the same way: According to Newsweek, in 1993, a man alleged that his wife had died of brain cancer from cell-phone use. He then sued the manufacturer but the case was dismissed.

But since then, many other newsstories have been published on cell phone risks and manufacturers are probably starting to sense the public’s worries, since we now see initiatives coming from the industry. At the beginning of July, shortly after the World Health Organization (WHO) called for more cell phone studies, the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA) announced that phone makers would be starting to include radiation level information on their products, thus potentially allowing us to select a phone depending on its radiation level.

It’s an important step, compared to their traditional attitude, which has always been to say: “There is no proof that cell phones involve a health risk.” No proof… yes, but does that mean there are no risks? Certainly not! There might be risks but we can’t prove it yet, and that’s all their “reassuring” statements say.

What we really need is more studies… and stronger studies. There have been some but their scientific method is criticized. The stronger the upcoming studies, the more useful they will be. It’s a very open field for researchers cause there are many things we need to know: do the phones harm us?; What about the base stations?; Are protective devices efficient?; Is this less damageable to wear your phone at your belt and use a headset?

In my opinion, we will soon see tens of initiatives burgeoning among the industry itself. As concerns about health risks raise and news stories continue to pile up, phone makers and network operators will have to do something else than just say “There is no proof” if they want to meet their exponential growth forecasts… It is said that worldwide cell phone users will skyrocket from 450 million in 1999 to 1.2 billion by 2003!

Such a market should motivate them to find workable solutions quickly if they don’t want their potential customers to change their mind… before they boil it.

Risk factors for cancer and tumors caused by radiation sources are directly proportional to exposure levels and accumulated dosage, or time. Localized HEATING of brain tissue near cell and cordless phone antennas is a well documented fact. If you have used any form of wireless telephone for any length of time and felt warmth or a throbbing in the side of your head, that can be the cause of it. And if cancer runs in your family? Look out!

If you are cooking meat, what difference does it make if you cook something on medium heat for fifteen minutes, or cook it all day on low heat in a crock pot? It’s still cooked. Your internal tissues, brain and organs are no different.

RF damage doesn’t begin and end with telephones. Biological damage and sleep problems by Wi-fi network antennas are only now becoming widely known. Some areas inEurope have already banned these networks after numerous research studies have established real risks.

Now we have Bluetooth everywhere. Here’s a recent example from CNN of the tremendous ignorance people have about RF radiation and how they ignorantly welcome it into their lives, putting their full faith and trust in Uncle:

” Murphy said he plans on spending more this year, about $3,000 to $4,000 total on stuff such as video games and “anything with Bluetooth.”[1]

There is a perfect combination of madness and ignorance. How many millions of people around the world are thinking just like him? Would anyone spend any money on a product, knowing they will make themselves seriously SICK? Probably not.

Perhaps RF electronic toys are the new addiction and have replaced cigarettes.

What good will it do anyone to work their entire life and see retirement coming – only to learn from their doctor they have a massive inoperable brain tumor, lymphoma, organ damage or other cancer as a result of cell phones or other toys?

Wireless lovers will cry out, “But that’s not the same thing!” But in a way it is. Radiation damage over time applies to ALL forms of radiation, from radio frequencies (RF) up through ultraviolet. Damage pathology is well known and there are ANSI standards for exposure to almost all forms of electromagnetic energy. Strict safety standards have been established to light entering the eye – including ultraviolet wavelengths at almost energy level. With shorter wavelengths there is a higher the risk of developing cataracts fairly quickly. Various radio and light wavelengths have well established safe exposure levels.

Consider Pierre and Madame Curie, well known for their discovery of Radium and Polonium. No radiation standards existed for them yet when Madame died July 4th 1934from radiation sickness. Pierre died in 1906. His demise hastened by ill health and did not recover from being run over by a horse drawn carriage. Microwaves, ultraviolet, alpha, beta and gamma radiation are ALL part of the same electromagnetic spectrum. All of these forms of radiation will damage the body, just in different ways and at different dose levels.

Cell phone companies do not want you to even remotely think about any of these facts.

How many cell phone and Blue Tooth users must DIE before people wake up and a safety standard is established? Don’t hold your breath waiting ­ cell phone corporations are very powerful and they will make certain no such standard will ever be established. Period. And don’t lie to yourself by counting on Uncle to protect you. If the government can’t protect itself ­ how can it protect us from anything? Perhaps it doesn’t want to protect you, in the name of population control.

Property values have also been known to drop once a cell tower is erected, due to the perceived risk of negative health effects. Cellular phone frequencies have also seriously disrupted local emergency and law enforcement radio communications.

Massachusetts lawyer Mark Berthiaume, opposing placement of a cell phone tower, said “Municipalities …. are being bullied every day by providers of wireless telephone service who use their financial clout and the federal (law) to intimidate the communities into allowing them to place large towers in inappropriate locations.” 17

Some Questions and Answers

But don’t we need and depend on cell phones?

Of course. No one is saying not to have cell phones and towers, but to make them safer. If Austria can have levels 10,000 times more protective, then so can we. It is just more expensive to the companies. Also, we don’t have to let these cell towers go anywhere and everywhere the industry wants them. We can require that they erect the minimum number required to provide adequate coverage, and be put in the safest places possible.

Why don’t we just oppose the construction of cell towers in our county?

In a strategic move, the cell phone industry has tried to make it illegal for citizens to oppose the towers based on health concerns. In the Telecommunications Act of 1996, state and local rights were seriously limited with regard to opposing towers based on health concerns. The constitutionality of this Act has been challenged in the Supreme Court, and a long legal battle is sure to follow. But it will take years, while the public continues to be exposed to chronic, cumulative radiation with each new cell tower.

So what CAN we do?

The Telecommunications Act prevents citizens from opposing the towers based on concerns about RF emissions, but we can oppose them on numerous other valid grounds. There are still rights we and our local elected officials maintain, that allow us local control of the number, size and placement of cell towers, while still providing for adequate cell phone coverage. Numerous communities have called for moratoriums on tower construction, allowing them needed time to study the issue, and enact strict ordinances that require the industry to respect community desires, such as building the minimum towers necessary, in appropriate locations. During these moratoriums, communities are preparing non-industry biased studies of cell phone tower need, and creating cell tower Master Plans, to help protect the rights and health of citizens, while complying with the law. 18, 19, 20

Siting of cellular towers is an important function of our elected officials. Protection of citizens’ health and property rights should be foremost in the responsibilities of local government. We urge our elected officials to protect the health and welfare of the citizens who live here, rather than big-money interests with profit as their bottom line.

Dr. Neil Cherry, Ph.D. biophysicist from New Zealand, reports that “there is no safe level of ER radiation.” Dr. Cherry wrote a 120-page review of 188 scientific studies. He said the standards are based on thermal effects, but important non-thermal effects also take place, such as cell death and DNA breakdown. “The electromagnetic radiation causes cells to change in a way that makes them cancer forming.” It can increase the risk of cancer two to five times, he said. “To claim there is no adverse effect from phone towers flies in the face of a large body of evidence.”

Other federal health agencies disagree that safe levels of exposure have been identified, much less built into the FCC standard. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) does not agree with the FCC standards, and analysts have recommended that EMR be classified as a “probable human carcinogen”. 12

Deputy Director of the Dept. of Health and Human Services, Elizabeth Jacobsen, has stated that the safety of RF “has not been established nor has the necessary research been conducted to test it”, and cites risk of brain cancer, tumors and DNA breakdown. The California Public Utility Commission has urged the cell phone industry to not locate towers near schools or hospitals. And the World Health Organization reports “many epidemiological studies have addressed possible links between exposure to RF fields and excess risk of cancer. These studies do not provide enough information to allow a proper evaluation of human cancer risk from RF exposure because the results of these studies are inconsistent.”

“The safety of RF has not been established, nor has the necessary research been conducted to test it.” Elizabeth Jacobsen, Director, US Dept. of Health “Our bodies are exquisitely sensitive to subtle electromagnetic harmonics, and we depend upon tiny electrical impulses to conduct complex life processes,” says Dr. Robert Becker, author of The Body Electric, and Cross Currents, The Perils of Electropollution. 13, 14

He says “at the present the greatest polluting element in the earth’s environment is the proliferation of (these) electromagnetic fields.” Radiation once considered safe, he says, is now correlated with increases in birth defects, depression, Alzheimer’s disease, learning disabilities, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and cancer. The incidence of brain cancer is up 25% since 1973, and this year 185,000 Americans will be diagnosed with brain cancer. Brain tumors are the second leading cause of cancer death for children and young adults. Yet, the United States has a de facto policy of “post sales surveillance” with respect to RF radiation. Only after years of exposure, will there be studies to characterize the health consequences. It can take 3 to 10 years for health effects to show up. Citizens shouldn’t be forced to act as guinea pigs in a radiation bioeffects experiment.

Some adverse health effects show up immediately, but it can often take 3 to 10 years for the longer term effects of RF illness to appear, such as cancer. Many researchers, public health officials and citizens believe that consumers shouldn’t be forced to act as guinea pigs in a bioeffects experiment for the next 20 years. In short, “we are the experiment”, for health effects.

The current U.S. standard for radiation exposure from cell phone towers is 580-1,000 microwatts per sq. cm. (mW/cm2), among the least protective in the world. More progressive European countries have set standards 100 to 1,000 times lower than the U.S. Compare Australia at 200 microwatts, Russia, Italy, and Toronto, Canada at 10, China at 6, and Switzerland, at 4. In Salzburg, Austria the level is .1 mircowatts (pulsed), 10,000 times less than the U.S. New Zealand has proposed yet more stringent levels, at .02 microwatts, 50,000 times more protective than the U.S. standard. 3, 4
Contrary to what the communications industry tells us, there is vast scientific, epidemiological and medical evidence that confirms that exposure to the RF and microwave radiation emitted from cell towers, even at low levels, can have profound adverse effects on biological systems. 5, 6, 7, 8

Scientists and advocacy groups say that the current FCC “safe” standards are based on 1985 research, and fail to consider more recent research that found brain cancer, memory impairment, DNA breakdown, and neurological problems with RF at much lower levels. The earlier studies considered only the “thermal”, or heating effects of the radiation in other words, the level at which the radiation would heat tissue, or ” cook” a person, in the same exact manner that a microwave oven works. The FCC levels may ensure our tissues are not “cooked”, but they fail to address long-term chronic exposure at low levels, or what is called “non-thermal” effects.

Doctors say that RF radiation is wreaking havoc with normal biological cell functions. “RF alters tissue physiology”, says Dr. George Carlo, an epidemiologist who found genetic damage in a $28 million research program, paid for by the industry. He now fights to have safety levels lowered. 9
