They have been found to have 90-95 % effectiveness, says the companys director, Neha Kumar.

Another range of products offered by Delhi-based Green8 India includes cellular foils manufactured in Germany that can be put underneath the mobile phones battery to reduce radiation. The companys solution for tower radiation is a transformer, labeled PST 28, which Suneel Sardana, the firms CMD, says neutralizes radiation and creates a protective zone within a radius of up to 33 metres.

But despite the proliferation of these devices, their acceptability among consumers is still quite low.According to K Kanan of Chennai-based Portoworld that markets an antiradiation chip called Radisafe, a major reason for slow sales in India is because the effects of radiation are not immediately visible and people are not bothered about it too much. We have scant respect for health in our country, unlike the West where diseases arising from radiation are a major concern. In fact, sales of our products are high in the US, Europe and even countries like the West Indies and Mozambique. However, it is just a few thousand units in India which, ironically, has a mobile phone subscriber base of nearly 90 crore.

Cell phone companies though, not surprisingly, brush aside the efficacy of these products and even the need for them, saying there is no conclusive evidence to prove that emissions from mobile towers cause health hazards. The government has adopted and implemented the ICNIRP (International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection Board) standards for the telecom sector in the country which is considered to be one of the best in the world and has been adopted by over 90% of nations. It ensures abundant precautionary limits for exposure from base stations and phones. So there is no question of any instrument, device or product being necessary for protecting consumers from such emissions. They are simply a waste of money, says Rajan S Mathews, director general of the Cellular Operators Association of India.

Anti-radiation product proponents say they expect this reaction from a very strong cell phone lobby in the country. Acknowledging that these products are working is tantamount to the mobile companies admitting that their own phones and transmission towers are emitting harmful radiation in the first place, which they will never do, says Sardana.

But the fact remains that the lack of effective standards for rating these devices is a stark, gaping hole in their claims. N K Goyal, president of the Communications and Manufacturing Association of India, says the field remains somewhat of a grey area. There are many products which are available in the market now.In the absence of certification from a credible agency like, say, the Bureau of Indian Standards, it is very difficult to find out which is good and which is bad. Also, not much indigenous research has been done on anti-radiation devices in the country. Poddar of Synergy Environics says they have been studying the subject on their own for the past few years and have recently carried out medical tests in association with Delhis Max Hospital, which showed encouraging results. We would also like to test our products on a larger scale with an established protocol and cooperation from the telecom industry, says Poddar. However, a few of the mobile tower manufacturers we have approached say they can allow radiation protection devices on their towers only if there is a legislation from the government to do so. The main issue, undoubtedly, is of awareness among more people. Once awareness increases, we are sure the demand for these products will be in the form of a huge tidal wave.

Rep. Dennis Kucinich, a democrat from Ohio, introduced a federal bill today that would put warning labels on cell phones and create a national research program to study cell phone radiation levels.

H.R. 6358, named the Cell Phone Right to Know Act, would also require the Environmental Protection Agency to update the standards for specific absorption rate, or SAR, the amount of radio frequency energy absorbed by the body when using a cell phone.

“It took decades for scientists to be able to say for sure that smoking caused cancer. During those decades, the false impression created by industry supporters was that there was no connection between smoking and cancer, a deception which cost many lives. While we wait for scientists to sort out the health effects of cell phone radiation, we must allow consumers to have enough information to choose a phone with less radiation,” Kucinich said in a statement. “As long as cell phone users may be at increased risk of cancer or reproductive problems, Americans must have the right to know the radiation levels of cell phones.”

The wireless industry is currently fighting a similar San Francisco law . A federal appeals court is scheduled to hear arguments on Thursday. CNET will be there to bring you more information.
Supported by health groups, the San Francisco law was the first of its kind in the country and spawned similar legislation in other cities and a few states. But, the CTIA quickly sued San Francisco on the grounds that the SAR labeling provision was unconstitutional, misleading to consumers, and that it infringed on the First Amendment rights of retailers.

People who worry that RF radiation from cellphones could be harmful got a boost Wednesday when the U.S. Government Accountability Office, a spending watchdog that reports to Congress, said the American telecommunications regulator should take another look at its regulations for exposure to mobile phones.

As this report says , the GAO acknowledged that there’s no scientific proof exposure hurts people. But, it added, the area is still under study and other countries have adopted stiffer rules than the regulator, the Federal Communications Commission.

It’s a sticky area. There is no absolute proof cellphones damage health, but there are suspicions about any device that issues RF signals that is close to a person’s body. A number of long-term studies are expected to be finished this year, the GAO noted.

Last October Health Canada encouraged parents to reduce their children’s radio frequency exposure from cell phones since children are typically more sensitive to a variety of environmental agents . As well, it said, there is currently a lack of scientific information regarding the potential health impacts of cell phones on children.

Unfortunately the GAO hasn’t added much to the debate on this issue. Advice to the FCC to “”take another look”” isn’t much help in the absence of scientific evidence. All it does is gain headlines.

The Government Accountabil­ity Office on Tuesday called on federal regulators to revamp standards that measure the impact of radiation from cellphones.

The year-long review by the GAO, which was done at the urging of lawmakers, did not suggest that cellphone use causes cancer. But the GAO was critical of the way the Federal Communications Commission has managed its standards, noting that the rules, which had not changed since 1996, lagged behind those of the international community.

The FCC’s regulations “may not reflect the latest evidence on the the effects” of cellphones, the GAO’s report said.

What’s more, when testing cellular radiation exposure on someone using an earpiece, the FCC assumed that people would place their phones at a distance, say, on a nearby table, the GAO noted. But many keep their phones in their pockets or on belt buckles.

The FCC “may not be identifying the maximum exposure, since some users may hold a mobile phone directly against the body while in use,” the GAO said. It recommended that the FCC reexamine both its exposure limits and the way it conducts tests.

In response to the report, the FCC said it will ask federal health agencies and others for input as it assesses its regulations. The FCC said in June that it was contemplating whether it needed to update its rules, but the agency has noted that reputable health experts dismiss fears that cellphones are dangerous.

“The U.S. has among the most conservative standards in the world,” FCC spokesman Neil Grace said in a statement. “We look forward to reviewing today’s GAO report as part of that consideration.”

Rep. Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), who had asked the GAO to study the matter, said the study shows that the FCC is behind the curve.

“With mobile phones in the pockets and purses of millions of Americans, we need a full understanding of the long-term impact of mobile phone use on the human body, particularly in children, whose brains and nervous systems are still developing,” Markey said.

Ahead of the study’s release, there had been renewed interest in the area of cellphone radiation.

Last year, a World Health Organization report found that cellphone radiation might be carcinogenic. A separate study from the National Institutes of Health, done in early 2011, found that 50 minutes of cellphone use altered activity in the part of the brain closest to where the device antennas were located.

On Monday, Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich (D-Ohio) introduced a bill that would put warning labels on cellphones and tap the Environmental Protection Agency — not the FCC — to lead the way in examining the effects that radiation has on the human body.

In a statement, Kucinich said that cellphone users have a right to know how much radiation their phones give off, particularly as people spend more time with them. They shouldn’t have to wait for scientists to prove whether there are harmful effects.

“It took decades for scientists to be able to say for sure that smoking caused cancer,” Kucin­ich said. “We must allow consumers to have enough information to choose a phone with less radiation.”

The city of San Francisco is looking at a labeling measure similar to the one proposed by Kucinich. CTIA, the wireless industry’s trade group, has filed a lawsuit against the proposed ordinance.

A question by local parents has prompted a provincewide debate over the impact wireless Internet access in schools may have on our children’s health.

A group of local parents says Wi-Fi in elementary schools is making their children sick.

They are worried that electromagnetic radiation from wireless transmitters are causing a lengthy list of problems they say have been absent over the summer break.

“”We went quietly to the school board,”” said Rodney Palmer, whose children attend Mountain View Elementary School in Collingwood.

“”All I want is for it to be turned down in my son and daughter’s school. Wi-Fi is a tool and a very useful one, but let’s not overuse it.””

Some of the problems reported at the Collingwood school and 11 others in Simcoe County include headaches, dizziness and rashes.

There are four Barrie schools – Terry Fox Elementary, Holly Meadows, Ferndale Woods, Mapleview Heights – on the list of schools where teachers and students report health problems.

Concern among teachers has prompted a call for the removal of Wi-Fi from schools until the issue of its impact on health is more clear.

The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario, currently meeting in Niagara, heard a proposal from the Niagara local Tuesday.

“”We’re putting forth a resolution to remove wireless… in our schools until more research”” either confirms or denies the health implications, said Niagara teacher Tay Shiner. “”Our main concern is the education and well being of children.

“”An executive member has received several calls from teachers. They have voiced concerns about being in a Wi-Fi school.””

The motion didn’t garner enough support, however, and was defeated.

Other groups elsewhere in the province are investigating the issue.

Susan Clarke, who studies radio-frequency radiation bioeffects, addressed a Thornbury group last week with concerns. Wi-Fi, she told them, alters fundamental physiological functioning in humans and can cause neurological and cardiac symptoms.

The Simcoe County District School Board, with the support of the provincial ministries of health and education, maintains the system is safe for children’s use in classrooms.

The school board is satisfied that its systems conform with Health Canada’s safety code and with current safety standards.

“”The last message that we had from our trustees was that it was affirmed… that we were staying with wireless,”” said John Dance, the school board’s superintendent of schools.

Access to the Internet has become part of the 21st century learning regime and is not restricted to administrative staff. Every school and classroom in the public board has access to the Internet, as do most portable classrooms.

Digital textbooks are also becoming more mainstream because software licences are easier to keep than hard copies of the books themselves.

In addition to increasing demands from students, there are the requirements of special-needs students, some of whom rely on technological advancements to help them learn.

Without wireless, says Dance, current, updated learning, becomes difficult.

And, he says, the systems used to create wireless access are not similar to cellular phone systems and antennas.

Cellphones, he says, are much more powerful than wireless access points.

Palmer argues Health Canada’s position isn’t that wireless is safe but that it encourages “”sound judgment”” in the rapidly advancing field of technology.

In the case of his children’s school, he adds, there is adequate access to the Internet without reliance upon the redundant wireless route.

Lakehead University has opted out of Wi-Fi and cellular antennae at both its Thunder Bay and new Orillia campus. It relies on fibre optics to connect students to the Internet.

Its November policy declares that it is completely connected to the World Wide Web and has adequate cellphone access.

The “”precautionary principal”” heeds questions raised by some studies indicating possible health concern over continuous or frequent long-term exposure to the non-ioinizing radiation of electromagnetic fields.

“”It (the policy) will be reviewed every year,”” said Lakehead’s Michael Pawlowski, vice- president of administration and finance.

Palmer, who has a health-related business, said other possible causes for the children’s symptoms like mould in the school, have been eliminated.

The only remaining area of concern that remains unresolved, he said, is the wireless network.

Pediatricians Say Cell Phone Radiation Standards Need Another Look

Concerns persist over the health effects of radiation from cell phones, especially for kids. Now the nation’s largest pediatricians group is asking the government to review emission standards

It’s been 18 years since the U.S. government assessed the standards for cell phone radiation. That was back in 1996, long before the practice of giving your big kid a cell phone became as common as giving your little kid a bath. Both cell-phone technology and cell-phone use have changed in the interim, which is why last week the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) urged the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to reconsider its radiation standards.

Current guidelines specify that the specific absorption rate (SAR) the amount of radiofrequency (RF) energy absorbed by the body when using a cell phone can’t exceed 1.6 watts per kilogram. The standard tells cell-phone makers how much radiation their products are allowed to emit. This all sounds pretty technical; why, you may wonder, is the AAP getting involved in deliberations over RF and SARs? It comes down to children’s health and well-being, writes AAP President Dr. Robert Block, who notes that standards are based on the impact of exposure on an adult male, not on women or kids:

Children, however, are not little adults and are disproportionately impacted by all environmental exposures, including cell phone radiation. In fact, according to [the International Agency for Research on Cancer], when used by children, the average RF energy deposition is two times higher in the brain and 10 times higher in the bone marrow of the skull, compared with mobile phone use by adults.

The AAP’s appeal has a history: previous research has raised questions about whether exposure to radiation from mobile phones can lead to brain cancer. And last month, FCC chairman Julius Genachowski formally proposed an inquiry into radiation standards in cell phones and other wireless devices.

The FCC is also looking into whether emissions standards should be adjusted for the types of devices that are used mostly by kids, which makes sense. But Block points out that standards for all cell phones even those not aimed at children or teens need to “be based on protecting the youngest and most vulnerable populations to ensure they are safeguarded throughout their lifetimes.”

Given his target audience, Block couldn’t resist highlighting more than physical health concerns. He also brought up the downside of too much time spent using cell phones, computers, televisions and other devices.

The Academy has found potentially negative effects and no known positive effects of media use by children under the age of 2, including television, computers, cell phones and other handheld wireless devices. In addition, studies consistently show that older children and adolescents utilize media at incredibly high rates, which potentially contributes to obesity and other health and developmental risks. In reviewing the SAR limit, the FCC has the opportunity to improve the health of our nation by highlighting the importance of limiting screen time and media use for children and adolescents.

The AAP is not recommending a SAR standard, says Dr. Jerome Paulson, chair of the AAP’s council on environmental health and a pediatrician at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. “We don’t have any preconceived notions about how much is too much,” says Paulson. “But we know in general that children are more vulnerable to environmental hazards.”

Until there’s more clarity, Paulson recommends doing what comes naturally to many kids: text. That way the cell phone isn’t near a child’s head. For phone conversations, use a hands-free device. And pregnant women, take care not to carry your cell phone in a pocket near your abdomen.

Four local women are hoping to at least start a real dialogue in society about electromagnetic hyper sensitivity (EHS) and the impact wireless technology can have on our health.

Christel Martin recently spoke to Nanaimo city council about turning off wireless servers in city facilities, so EHS sufferers like her could use them without getting sick.

When the library introduced wireless service four years ago she started getting itchy and irritable, which soon escalated to include insomnia, nightmares, heart palpitations, dizziness and headaches.

While the symptoms can vary greatly, there are a lot of common elements explained Jacqueline Little, who also gets an irregular heart beat, chest pains and itchiness, with a lot of vision and eye complications thrown in for extra discomfort. Louise Campbell also had many issues with her eyes and ears before she discovered her house wasn’t properly grounded and that experience has since made her sensitive to the “electro smog” radiating from other electrical devices, both wireless and not.

Jean Pongratz-Doyle explained that it has a lot to do with how much wireless signal is present, pointing out that her symptoms got worse as new layers of overlapping cell phone and wi-fi service were added, especially in areas like downtown Nanaimo where many cafe’s, restaurants and offices have their own routers.

While the women eventually found some sympathetic ears and doctors, they have become experts in doing their own research into a field they admit is relatively new and lacks the mainstream acceptance for more people to take them seriously.

Despite the apparent uphill battle against “smart meters,” and the proliferation of cell phones and wireless infrastructure, the women are generally optimistic it is only a matter of time before the tide of awareness shifts in their favour.

Martin compares the “electro smog” produced by these technologies as similar to cigarette smoke a generation ago when some already accepted the dangers, but the rest of society was still struggling against powerful interests on the other side of the issue.

She also said it’s a problem of people having a nee jerk reaction to anything that threatens the connivence of their cell phones.

Estimates of the prevalence of EHS vary widely from a few people per million, to as high as five per cent of the population, with some suggestions of mild sensitivity going as high as 35 to 50 per cent of the population.

While official sources like the World Health Organization and Health Canada tend to downplay EHS as rare and possibly caused by unrelated things like stress, there is a growing recognition that some people are suffering legitimate medical issues that have to at the very least be better understood.

The most common advice at this point is to do what these women figured out themselves — limit exposure to electromagnetic sources.

While that might help with the problem at home or work, it doesn’t help in places like cafe’s and libraries offering wi-fi to their customers, or in cities filled with cell phone towers.

While they might dream about it, the women are not asking for a complete wireless ban, just that it be further studied and considered, especially in schools and homes where children — more sensitive to the effects — are spending unprecedented amounts of time with wireless technology.

When Martin appeared before Nanaimo council she was basically told the benefits of providing the service outweigh any health complaints at this time.

Proposed Cell Sites Threaten Santa Cruz Wildlife Area Demonstration at Verizon Wireless

Residents of Santa Cruz County concerned about health, privacy, and the environment, as well as those who enjoy the beaches of the north coast free of cell towers and other industrial equipment, demonstrated in front of Verizon Wireless’s retail store on Pacific Avenue in downtown Santa Cruz on Saturday July 21. The protest raised awarenesses about the company’s plans, along with NextG corporation, to install six new cell sites along Highway 1 and Swanton Road in the county’s remote north coast region.

Demonstrators say the North Coast Cell project is a threat to views, endangered species and resident safety. The California Coastal Commission is expected to decide whether to issue a coastal permit for the project at its meeting on Aug. 10 at the Santa Cruz County building. A large community presence is anticipated.

Cell phone, wi-fi, and smart meter emissions were labelled by the World Health Organization in May 2011 as a Class 2B carcinogen, and many are reporting symptoms from exposure to these devices. Despite this, California utility customers are being charged a large fee to avoid this carcinogen. Verizon is a partner with PG&E and receives wireless data pulses from PG&E SmartMeters containing residents’ private data.

Mockups of the cell sites that are currently in place have been obstructing views and cluttering the landscape for months. Residents were given little notification and many wondered about the strange cylindrical and rectangular objects suddenly mounted on the poles. The equipment will directly interfere with views from Swanton Rd. to the coast and the pristine redwood valley in between, a designated and protected special scenic area. “What do ‘protected areas’ mean if we are not going to defend these areas from industrial development? We expect the Coastal Commissioners to take a hard look at this project, how it violates the Coastal Act, and undermines public access to the coast” says Joshua Hart, spokesperson for the local group opposing the project.

Local environmentalists have raised the alarm over impacts from cell towers that studies indicate may have deadly consequences for endangered species in the area. Organizations like the Sierra Club’s Santa Cruz Group have come out against the plan. The northernmost tower is proposed to be constructed only feet from Big Basin State Park, adjacent to wetlands that are home to federally endangered species such as the Red Legged Frog and Western Pond Turtle. Studies have shown a 90% mortality rate for tadpoles exposed to cell tower radiation at the distance that tadpoles in Waddell Creek wetlands would be exposed.

Fire risk is also at issue. NextG Corp. is a defendant in a lawsuit filed by residents of Malibu who suffered nearly 15 million in damages from a 2007 wildfire caused by power poles overloaded with telecommunications equipment that blew over and sparked in high winds. Opponents of the project are saying that the last thing the Bonny Doon area needs is another wildfire. NextG Corp. has already strung miles of cable between the proposed sites which community members say they have done without a permit and in violation of the Coastal Act.

Many local residents are opposed to the project, and see the cell sites as an existential threat to their quality of life and the pristine nature of the local environment. High speed wired DSL service is available widely throughout the area at residences, so the need for a series of power gulping cell sites emitting pulsed microwave radiation 24/7 has been questioned – particularly in the proposed locations, sending a carcinogenic substance into Big Basin, California’s first state park and still home to a thriving ecosystem.
