You give up alcohol, cigarettes, maybe sushi and lunch meat, and coffee too. But would you give up your cell phone during pregnancy? What if your baby’s health was at stake?

Researchers at the Yale School of Medicine just released a study that shows radiation from cell phones have created ADHD-like symptoms in mice whose mothers were exposed during pregnancy. The affected mice tended to be more hyperactive and have reduced memory capacity compared to mice who were not exposed to radiofrequency radiation as fetuses.

“We have shown that behavioral problems in mice that resemble ADHD are caused by cell phone exposure in the womb,” says Dr. Hugh S. Taylor, a senior author of the study. “The rise in behavioral disorders in human children may be in part due to fetal cellular telephone irradiation exposure.” Taylor says in this article on Science Daily that more research is needed to determine what levels of cell phone radiation are acceptable for pregnant women but that, for now, limiting your exposure is a smart thing to do. At the very least, he advises pregnant women to carry phones away from their midriffs and not take them to bed at night.

Scary stuff, right? Especially if you use your cell phone all day, every day, whether for work or because you’re addicted to Angry Birds and Draw Something.

Is this study enough to change your phone habits while pregnant?

If you are a constant user of a cell or a mobile phone, then it is important for you to know the health hazards that are developed in humans by the regular and frequent use of the cell phones. Cell phone radiation is a global phenomenon and the most common device that people use to avoid the radiation through cell phones is the cell phone radiation shield. The amount of cell phone radiation that affects the cell phone users is measured as the amount of microwave energy that is generated from the cell phone during a phone call and the amount that penetrates the brain. The closeness of the cell phone tower to the cell phone and the amount of microwave energy that is needed to facilitate a phone call are all considered to determine the amount of radiation that is emitted from the cell phone. If you are close by to the cell phone tower, then the distance required to travel by the microwave energy is lesser and hence radiation will be low. But, if you are at far off places from the cell phone tower and the reception signal is very weak, then a lot of microwave energy is being transmitted to and fro the cell phone and the tower and hence radiation also will be at its peak.

Cell Phones In Pockets

It is always better to avoid placing your cell phone in your pant pockets as there have been varied studies that claim that Cell Phone Radiation is responsible for ovarian cancer in women. If you want to protect yourself from cell phone radiation, then it is better not to carry your cell phone in your shirt pockets because there are possibilities of the radiation from your cell phone to causes damages to your heart. Moreover, if you are a person who has a pace-maker device fitted inside your body, then it is all the more important for you to not store your cell phone in your shirt pockets as a small mal-function of the pacemaker might turn out to be life threatening.

Use of Shields And Pouches

If you are looking at limiting the cell phone radiation emitting from your mobile phones, it will be ideal for you to always carry cell phone pouches. Most of the pouches that are available these days can be fitted into your trouser belt and this will help you to lessen the effect of cell phone radiation. A woman is well advised to carry her cell phone in her purse to avoid radiation. The most common device used to protect yourself from cell phone radiation is the radiation seal that is fitted on to the ear piece of the cell phone.

Blue Tooth Headset

A blue tooth wireless headset is the best possible device that you can use to avoid the ill effects of cell phone radiation. Moreover, using blue tooth headsets will help you to converse with your friends, relatives or colleagues even while you are driving and it is totally hands free.

The single, most overlooked factor in behavior issues in children.

Cell phone radiation is one of the hottest and most controversial health topics of 2012. But it’s especially critical when it comes to regulating cellular technologies for pregnant women and children.

Since the publication of Zapped , I have been following the ongoing effects of cell phone radiation and diligently searching for practical solutions for adults, teens, tweens, and children. So imagine my relief when I learned that Pong Research has smartphone and iPad cases which help to protect users from wireless radiation emissions without interfering with the device itself or its performance—both proven in FCC-certified labs.

Pong’s cell phone and iPad cases are just what I have been searching for.

The Pong research department has said that, “According to the latest Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project, 83% of American adults own some kind of cell phone.” And the Kaiser Family Foundation reports that 31% of 8-10 year olds own a cell phone, 69% of 11-14 year olds, and 85% of 15-18 year olds. In addition, Apple has already sold more than 11 million iPads and Gartner, one of the world’s leading technology research firms, predicts that the iPad will continue to dominate tablets.

While incriminating evidence starts to emerge, The World Health Organization has already declared cell phone radiation as a possible carcinogen—in the same category as lead. A separate 2011 study published in the American Medical Journal discovered that 50 minutes of cell phone use triggers excessive brain activity in the area closest to the phone.

Landmark research from the Journal of Epidemiology in July 2008 reported that children born to mothers who used cell phones while pregnant, and children who used cell phones by age seven, were 80 percent more likely to be hyperactive and to have emotional and behavioral problems.

But the most revealing news is this game changer: Yale University professor, John Wargo, Ph.D. led a recently released study that connects prenatal cell phone usage with a higher incidence of ADHD symptoms. (See http://news.yale.edu/2012/03/15/cell-phone-use-pregnancy-may-cause-behavioral-disorders-offspring)

This latest report calls for tougher standards to be put in place for regulation of cellular technologies—particularly when it comes to children and pregnant women.
I also discovered many additional studies linking other forms of technology to childhood behavioral issues, which I discuss in Zapped .

I think of how rates of autism, ADHD, and learning disabilities have soared in the last forty years. In 1970, for example, about 1 in 10,000 children were diagnosed with autism. Today the incidence is estimated by the Centers for Disease Control at 1 in 110. There are many theories as to the rise in autism including the overuse of Doppler ultrasounds during pregnancy.

Limiting exposure from cell phones and cordless phones by way of texting, enabling the speaker phone option, and simply turning the device off during non usage times are not always easy to implement. The FCC precautions against using products claiming that they block or shield cell phone radiation. In reality they have been found to result in an increase of radiation exposure to the user. These same devices also decrease the performance of the device which only compounds the problem.

My book, Zapped , lists 1,268 helpful ways to outsmart the hazards of electronic pollution aside from eliminating cell phone or iPad usage altogether.
Let’s be perfectly clear, the number one thing is to restrict cell and cordless phone usage during pregnancy. It has been found that pregnant women using cell phones two or three times a day are more likely to have children with behavior problems such as hyperactivity, emotional outbursts and relationship issues. Use these tips to protect you and your children:

* Text whenever possible.
* Avoid baby monitors with stubby half-inch antennas. Look for the older style that is a wired monitor.
* Never carry your baby while cooking, especially at the microwave.
* Discourage a small child’s use of a cell phone.
* Never phone or text while driving.
* Never attach a cell phone to your body or carry it in your pocket or bra.

Pong Research carries a high quality collection of cases for BlackBerry, iPad, iPhone and Android. They have been demonstrated by FCC-certified labs to reduce the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) up to 95% below the current FCC limit. The Pong technology uses a patented antenna that redistributes and redirects the offending radiation away from the user. These antennas are embedded in each case protecting the user’s head and body.
They are available in a rainbow of colors and are as easy to put on and take off as any high-quality cell phone or iPad case. They have been designed and tested to work anywhere in the world. The iPad 3 “origami” case is especially nifty—it can be folded into five different vertical or horizontal positions designed for every activity—watching videos, reading, typing, etc.

Cell Phone Radiation Dangers During Pregnancy – Yale University researchers warn that women who are pregnant often use cell phones can cause the baby at risk of behavioral problems.

Cell phone radiation exposure during pregnancy affect the baby’s brain development is called to be more anxious and more minimal memory skills.

This conclusion was obtained after studies of mobile phone radiation effects on pregnant mice. Scientists said the fetus in utero rats that received the higher radiation exposure will experience behavioral problems at birth than the rat fetus is far from radiation exposure.

Added, while the whole body of mice obtained radiation, pregnant women tend to hold the phone a few feet from their wombs.

Yale study was published in the latest issue of the journal Scientific and focus on the study on the concentration and behavior disorders (ADHD) in children.

ADHD is a developmental disorder characterized by inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. As much as 3-7 percent of school-age children is estimated to have ADHD symptoms, with higher growth since 1997.
“We have demonstrated that problem behavior in mice that mimic ADHD is caused by exposure to cell phones in the womb,” said Professor Hugh Taylor, senior author of the study to Dailymail about Cell Phone Radiation Dangers During Pregnancy.

“The rise of behavioral disorders in children of men may be partly due to exposure to mobile phone radiation on the fetus,” he said about Cell Phone Radiation Dangers During Pregnancy. He suggested that pregnant women avoid exposure to radiation as much as possible during pregnancy.

This study reinforces previous studies of scientists from the University of California, Los Angeles against 29 thousand children. The study concluded that children exposed in utero cell phone 30 percent higher risk of experiencing behavioral problems at age seven.

However, these findings drew criticism from experts, including scientists at University College London. According to scientists, it is not possible to compare mice and humans, because the content of rats aged 19 days only. Mouse brain development early in pregnancy is also different from the initial stages of human development.
Professor Katya Rubia, of the Institute of Psychiatry at King’s College London, said the anxiety levels decreased in rats. Though ADHD is usually higher in children with ADHD.

While several other British scientists said about Cell Phone Radiation Dangers During Pregnancy, there lived style factors that cause behavioral disorders in children. “Mothers who are fixated on the phone a little more likely to interact with their children.”

Round-the-clock cell phone radiation may harm growing brains, a mouse study suggests. Mice exposed to an active phone for the duration of a pregnancy gave birth to pups that displayed long-lasting behavioral and brain abnormalities, researchers write March 15 in Scientific Reports.

Although the results indicate that chronic exposure to cell phone radiation can disrupt the fetal brain in mice, it’s unclear whether the same holds true for people. “The paper is an interesting paper. There are no two ways around that,” says Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse in Bethesda, Md., who has studied the effects of cell phone radiation. “The issue is, ultimately, what is the significance to humans?”

In the study, reproductive endocrinologist Hugh Taylor of Yale School of Medicine and colleagues rigged up bare-bones cell phones (not smart phones) to pregnant mice’s cages. Half the phones were actively receiving a call on mute for the entirety of the mice’s pregnancies, which last about 17 days. The other phones were inactive.

On average, offspring from the mothers exposed to cell phone radiation performed worse on a memory test, moved around more, and were less anxious than mice who were not exposed to cell phone radiation. Nerve cell signaling in the prefrontal cortex — a brain region that, in humans, sits behind the forehead and has been implicated in many mental disorders — was also dampened in exposed mice.

In the report, Taylor and his colleagues suggest that these behavioral and brain deficits are similar to those seen in people with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and speculate that increased cell phone use could explain an increase in ADHD in children.

Other scientists disagree. “To blame the increase in ADHD on mobile phones, that is premature,” says cognitive neuroscientist and ADHD researcher Katya Rubia of King’s College London, who says that such a claim is alarmist and unjustified. The behavioral deficits of the mice are very different from the behavioral symptoms seen in people with ADHD, she says.

Mouse fetuses in the experiment were between 4.5 and 22.3 centimeters from the phone at all times — creating a different exposure than what a human fetus would receive. And Volkow notes that human fetuses have more protective amniotic fluid around them. “The exposures were too high and too intense to be translated to humans,” she says.

So far, other research has hinted at a possible link between pregnant women who used cell phones frequently and behavioral problems in their children. Two studies, led by epidemiologist Hozefa Divan, who conducted the research at UCLA and at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, found such an association. But more studies are needed, he says. “There’s still a lack of really solid evidence one way or the other.”

In the meantime, the researchers agree that pregnant women should avoid carrying a cell phone near the abdomen. “I don’t want to sensationalize this or cause panic, but I think it’s worth being cautious,” Taylor says.

Last year, the World Health Organization named cellphone radiation a possible carcinogen, putting it in a class with DDT, lead, and tailpipe exhaust in terms of potential to cause cancer. Because the technology is still relatively new and cancers could take decades to develop, researchers haven’t been able to definitively prove or disprove that cellphones, or other wireless devices like iPads, cause cancer.

The latest evidence suggesting you might want to practice the precautionary principal to protect your family from cellphone radiation? A new animal study out of Yale University found that prenatal exposure to cellphone radiation increases the risk of a child’s developing ADHD symptoms. This isn’t the first study to link cellphones to behavioral problems in kids. A 2010 study published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health found that children born in the mid- to late-1990s, the early days of cellphone use, were more likely to experience behavioral problems by age 7 if their mothers used a cellphone on a regular basis during and after pregnancy.
Another recent study found that a child’s growing body can absorb up to 10 times the radiation an adult’s body absorbs, another reason to limit exposure.

Aside from an increased risk of behavioral problems, cellphone radiation has been linked to ringing in the ears, bone loss, concentration problems, and sometimes, rashes.

The good news is you don’t have to totally abandon your iPad or smartphone to protect yourself from cellphone radiation.

Use these tips to drastically reduce the amount of radiation your absorb from cellphones and similar gadgets.

Put your phone in a safer mode. If you’re using your phone for certain tasks, you may not even need the wireless transmitters turned on. “”Teach your kids to keep their phone or iPad on Airplane Mode as much as possible,”” Ann Louise Gittleman, PhD, author Zapped: Why Your Cellphone Shouldn’t Be Your Alarm Clock and 1,268 Ways to Outsmart the Hazards of Electronic Pollution . “”Switching off the Wi-Fi and 3G transmitters reduces radiation exposure but still allows access to music, movies, apps, and games.””
Don’t sleep with your phone. Make sure family members, especially children, turn off radiation-emitting devices every night, and never allow them to sleep with the devices on or near them. Use a good old-fashioned alarm clock, not a cellphone version, near the bed.

Pick a Pong. Pong cellphone and iPad cases were developed by MIT, Princeton, Harvard, and UCLA scientists, and have been tested in labs to ensure they reduce radiation exposure by up to 95 percent below the FCC limit. Even celebrities like Jillian Michaels and Mila Kunis have been spotted with Pong cases.

Establish some headroom. Use speaker phone instead of talking with a cellphone up against your head, and favor texting versus talking whenever possible…it creates more space between the device and your body. (Just don’t text while driving!)

Pregnant women beware: you might want to add cellphones to the list of things to stay away from during pregnancy.

Researchers at Yale studied the effects of cellphone radiation on the offspring of pregnant mice and determined exposure to could result in developmental disabilities including ADHD, their study says in the March 15 issue of Scientific Reports.

A silenced cellphone in active call mode was placed on top of a cage of pregnant mice. An inactive cellphone was placed on top of another cage of pregnant mice to act as a control. The mice in both cages had babies, which were allowed to mature. Then researchers conducted a variety of tests to measure brain activity on the adult mice who had been exposed to radiation as fetuses. The tests showed that the mice had lower memory capacity and were more hyperactive than the control group. The areas of the brain that control these functions were impacted by the radiation, say the researchers. They concluded that cellphone radiation negatively impacted brain development of offspring, and could potentially cause developmental disabilities including ADHD.

The study is the first of its kind to link cellphone radiation to developmental disorders in offspring, according to author Dr. Hugh S. Taylor, chief of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Yale Medical School.

“We have shown that behavioral problems in mice that resemble ADHD are caused by cell phone exposure in the womb,” Taylor told Science Daily . “The rise in behavioral disorders in human children may be in part due to fetal cellular telephone irradiation exposure.”
Mice gestate for a much shorter time than humans (only 19 days) and are born with much less developed brains than humans, said the first co-author in the study, Tamir Aldad. More research is needed to show the possible risks of cellphone radiation to human fetuses.

Cellphones have been linked to causing everything from the mass death of bee colonies to a willingness to sacrifice one’s sex life and relationships. Dozens of studies and researchers have debated the issue of whether or not radiation from cellphones causes cancer. It’s an issue still up for debate.

Radiation from mobile phones may affect the brain development of unborn babies, the lead author of a controversial animal study has claimed.

Pregnant mice placed in the vicinity of an active mobile phone gave birth to offspring which showed signs of hyperactivity, anxiety and poor memory. Infant mice whose mothers were not exposed to the radiation were not affected the same way.

The changes were attributed to impaired development of neurons in the prefrontal cortex of the brain.

According to the US scientist who led the research, the same effects could potentially occur in humans.

Professor Hugh Taylor, from Yale University, believes mobile phones might even be partly responsible for rising rates of behavioural disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

However, other experts warned strongly against extrapolating the findings and assuming they were relevant to humans. One called the claims “”alarmist and unjustified””. The research is reported in the Nature publication Scientific Reports.

Prof Taylor said: “”This is the first experimental evidence that fetal exposure to radiofrequency radiation from cellular telephones does in fact affect adult behaviour.
“”We have shown that behavioural problems in mice that resemble ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) are caused by cell phone exposure in the womb. The rise in behavioural disorders in human children may be in part due to fetal cellular telephone irradiation exposure.””

He added that more work was needed in humans to investigate the mechanisms involved and establish safe levels of mobile phone exposure during pregnancy.

ADHD is a development disorder characterised by inattention, hyperactivity and impulsiveness. Between 3% and 7% of school-age children suffer from the disorder. Affected children tend to perform poorly at school and are at increased risk of delinquency.

Fetal Exposure to Cellphone Radiation Tied to ADHD-Like Symptoms in Mice

(HealthDay News)

In experiments involving mice, fetal exposure tocellphone radiation appeared linked to symptoms in offspring that resemble attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in human children, Yale researchers report.

Moreover, these problems with attention, hyperactivity and memory continued when the mice became adults and were worse the longer they were exposed to cellphone radiation in the womb, the researchers said.

“The hypothesis was that the developing brain might be more susceptible to these types of insults,” said senior researcher Dr. Hugh Taylor, a professor and chief of the division of reproductive endocrinology and infertility in the department of obstetrics, gynecology & reproductive sciences.

“We found they seem to have behavioral changes like ADHD. I don’t want to sensationalize this — mice don’t have ADHD — but they had problems with memory, impulsiveness and hyperactivity,” he explained.
There have been studies in humans that correlate the amount of time pregnant women spend on acellphone with their children’s ADHD, Taylor added.
“But, these studies were largely dismissed because there are many other things that correlate with cellphone use,” he said. “This study is the first one that shows that there is a cause-and effect-relationship,” at least in rodents, he said.
However, while studies involving animals can be useful, experts note that they frequently fail to produce similar results in humans.

The findings cannot therefore be directly extrapolated to women, but they do indicate that cellphone exposure during pregnancy may have effects, Taylor said. “We need to start thinking about how much is safe in humans and limit that exposure,” he said.
“I think we need to be careful about radio-frequency exposures in pregnant women,” he said. “The radiation may have consequences for the developing brain.”
The report was published in the March 15 issue of Scientific Reports.
During 19 days of pregnancy, Taylor’s team exposed mice to radiation from a turned on — but muted and silenced — cellphone placed above the cage.

In another group, mice were kept under the same conditions but with a deactivated phone.
The researcher measured electrical activity in the brains of adult mice that were exposed to radiation as fetuses. In addition, they conducted psychological and behavioral tests.
They found the mice exposed to radiation tended to be more hyperactive and had increased anxiety and reduced memory.

The explanation for this finding isn’t clear, Taylor said. It might be due to heating of the developing brain cells or electrical changes in these cells, he theorized.
Taylor noted that you don’t have to be talking on the cell phone to be exposed to radio-frequency radiation: “There is always radiation transmitted as long as the cellphone is on,” he said.

Speaking for the cellphone industry, John Walls, a spokesman for the CTIA-The Wireless Association, said that “the peer-reviewed scientific evidence has overwhelmingly indicated that wireless devices, within the limits established by the FCC, do not pose a public health risk or cause any adverse health effects.”
However, some doctors believe that more study might be warranted.
Dr. Francene Gallousis, a perinatologist at Northern Westchester Hospital in Mt. Kisco, N.Y., said that “I think there is something to all this, but I don’t know exactly what it is or how concerned we should be right now.”
“It can’t be ignored — it needs to be looked into,” she added.

Gallousis did suggest that to be safe, women should limit their exposure to cellphone radiation. She advised them to try to limit the time talking on the cellphone and to not leave it on if it doesn’t have to be.

Dr. Nagy Elsayyad, an assistant professor in the department of radiation oncology at the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, has looked at cellphone radiation and the risk for cancer. He also believes that it’s still too early to tell if the effects seen in mice translate to humans.

“These finding are interesting, but very preliminary,” he said. “This is hypothesis-generating research, so it’s too early to jump to any conclusions, but it’s worth putting research money into.”

By KIM CAROLLO

A new study could re-ignite the debate over the potentially dangerous effects of cell phone radiation on children’s behavior.

Researchers from the Yale School of Medicine found that exposing pregnant mice to radiation from a cell phone affected the behavior of their offspring later. They found that the mice exposed to radiation as fetuses were more hyperactive, had more anxiety and poorer memory — symptoms associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) — than mice who were not exposed to radiation.

Neurological tests revealed that the radiation exposure led to abnormal development of neurons in the part of the brain linked to ADHD, leading the authors to suggest that cell phone radiation exposure may play a role in the disorder.

“”During critical windows in neurogenesis, the brain is susceptible to numerous environmental insults; common medically relevant exposures include ionizing radiation, alcohol, tobacco, drugs and stress,”” wrote the authors, led by Dr. Hugh Taylor, professor and chief of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.

They added that while their study provides “”the first experimental evidence of neuropathology due to in-utero cellular telephone radiation,”” the data are not conclusive, and more research is needed to determine the effects of radiation on humans or non-human primates.

Dr. F. Sessions Cole, professor of pediatrics and chief of newborn medicine at Washington University School of Medicine, in St. Louis, said that while the research is “”provocative,”” the data are a long way from being applicable to humans.

“”Mice are very different than humans,”” he said. “”The distance the phone was placed away from the mice in the study was between 4 and 20 centimeters, which is a very short distance compared to the distance from the ear to the womb in humans. It’s likely the dose of radiation the mice received is much greater than what a human fetus would receive.””

Cole added that mice also have a much shorter gestation period, only 19 or 20 days, which can also mean a very different type of exposure than humans.

Much Study, But Few Definitive Conclusions

There have been a number of studies that looked at how cell phone radiation can possibly affect humans in different ways, from the development of cancer to behavior problems. Data have been inconclusive so far, and there has been no evidence of causation.
A 2010 study of more than 28,000 Danish children found that exposure to cell phones both before and after birth increased the risk for behavior problems.

Similar research back in 2008 sounded alarms in the media when news outlets reported that a particular study found that using mobile phones can cause serious harm to babies.

That study did find that Danish mothers who used cell phones during pregnancy reported more behavioral problems in their children, but the author said it was merely an association.

“”That’s clearly not what we wanted to suggest, and we think that there is no reason that pregnant women should be very alarmed at the findings we have,”” the lead author, Dr. Jorn Olsen of UCLA, told ABC News at the time the study was published.

There have also been several studies that examined the link between cell phones and cancer in children and adults, which also yielded inconsistent findings.

“”There’s been a lot of work on this subect, and it’s been pretty exhaustively demonstrated that cell phone radiation does not affect human health,”” said Cole.

A European study published in October found that cell phone users were not at higher risk for cancer, although the research couldn’t definitively rule that risk out. This research came just months after the World Health Organization said cell phones were a possible cause for cancer.

The American Cancer Society’s position is that there could be some cancer risk, but supporting evidence is not very strong. The agency urges people who are concerned to limit cell phone use, especially among children.

Risk Concerning to Some

But the Environmental Health Trust, a charitable organization whose mission is to educate the public about health risks in the environment, says the evidence from multiple studies shows there is reason to be concerned about the effects of cell phones.

They urge people to keep phones away from their head and their body when they are in standby mode and to avoid using them when the signal is weak. The group is also calling for more long-term research exploring the issue further.

And almost every phone manufacturer includes warnings in packaging urging users to take precautions.

The authors of the current study hope their findings will contribute to the understanding of how childhood behavior problems develop.

“”The rise in behavioral disorders in developed countries may be, at least in part, due to a contribution from fetal cellular telephone radiation exposure,”” they wrote. “”Further testing is warranted in humans and non-human primates to determine if the risks are similar and to establish safe exposure limits during pregnancy.””
