Ionizing vs. Nonionizing Radiation

Wireless Products Operate at the Microwave Level

Cell phones, cordless phones, pagers, radar, wireless Internet, and satellite communications function by using different radiofrequencies at the microwave level. A microwave oven may come to your mind when you read the term microwave. Microwaves used in wireless signaling are different from microwave ovens due to frequency, power, and heat. Cell phones operate at 750 to 950 MHz (mega hertz) while microwave ovens function at 2450 MHz. Microwave ovens obviously generate heat while wireless products don’t. Basically, microwave ovens use high frequency and high power, and cell phones use high frequency and low power.

How is a Radio Wave Different from a Microwave?

Radio waves are low levels of transmission power enabling signals to and from your cell phone. These non-ionizing frequencies in the few hundered MHz range are safe. But when the signal strength grows to 800 MHz and higher, these waves become microwaves. The older cordless house and office phones were a few hundred MHz of radio waves, but the more you moved from the base, the weaker the signal. You would soon lose the call, or it would break up. Today cordless phones are 900 MHz and higher so that you don’t lose calls when moving from room to room, and you can even go outside. These phone operate in the microwaves/infrared waves of radiating power.

Cell phones operate across a network of cellular sites called base stations. When using a cellular phone, sound signals are transmitted in radio frequencies and microwave frequencies with transmitters very close to the user’s head. Cell phones use a distant base unit, a cell phone antenna, as a means to receive and send communications in a laser-like beam of radiation to and from the cell phone. If you are in a car and using a cell phone, the cell phone locks on to different antennas as the car moves. As the car nears a cell phone antenna in the same cell phone network, less radiofrequency radiation is required by the cell phone to receive and send signals to the antenna. But as the car moves away, the cell phone uses more radiofrequency radiation to seek the closest antenna. These phones transmit at frequencies in the microwave range of 800 and 1900 megahertz.

Both RF and ELF are concerns with using a cell phone. There is a near-field and far field plume of radiation emitted when a cell phone is in use. According to the book Radiation Rescue, the near field radiates about a foot from the antenna , with the most intense plume in a 7 inch diameter circle around the antenna. As the picture illustrates, when using a cell phone, radiofrequency radiation penetrates approximately 2 inches into the adult brain. The Government of India is issuing new radiation guidelines for mobile phones and antennas (see article in the Economic Times of India published on 19 November 2011). It will be mandatory for mobile phone emission levels to be displayed at retail outlets and on phones sold in India. Hands-free devices must also be sold with each mobile phone, along with a booklet mentioning safety precautions, as the government believes the use of these devices will significantly reduce the risk of exposure from electromagnetic fields. http://mieuxprevenir.blogspot.com/2011/11/new-mobile-phone-radiation-guidelines.html

In a country where it is estimated that there will be 1.159 billion cell phones by the year 2013, this could be the only solution to reduce the health risks of this technology.

According to another article published in India’s Business Line, nearly 75 per cent of the currently available mobile phone models on the market would have to be redesigned to meet these new radiation standards or would become obsolete.

Permitted radiation levels (SAR) in mobile phones will be lowered by 50 per cent to the same levels as allowed in the United States. This will raise costs per mobile phone from 5 to 30 per cent. In India, there are about 10 global brands and another 15 to 20 Indian brands. More than 4,000 importers trade in unbranded Chinese phones at a volume of 3 to 4 million per month. It is feared that the new radiation guidelines will have no impact on these mobile phones. The makers of Indian brands believe that market sales of Chinese brandes will expand radiply during the 6 to 9 months that will take for Indian companies to redesign mobile phones to meet these new standards.

But the fact is we should care. But the word radiation should give us a clue. There is a great deal of scientific discussion on the effects of EMR on human beings. The history of radiation, from its discovery by Marie Curie, clearly shows the blessings and the curses of this material. Curie in fact got cancer from the radiation she worked with for years. At that time the dangers were unknown but in time they were discovered since their effect on the body is a long term affair. Nowadays, X-Ray technicians stand in glass cubicles and monitor the amount of radiation they have been exposed to, and most people are careful not to stand too close to microwaves when they are on. But at the same time that we have learned – the hard way – to take these safety measures, when it comes to mobile phone relay stations we take a different attitude. And potentially even more dangerous is the fact is that we actually put these instruments which “radiate” radiation next to our heads, often for long periods of time.

The trouble is no one wants to open up this Pandora’s Box. Cell phones are a basic component of modern life from both the individual and the corporate point of view. The trouble is that this financial and social investment makes objective research very difficult. As a result many people believe that the present data on this subject is not accurate. However, there are almost as many people that are claiming the scaremongers are merely paranoid, and the media, who have their own agenda, are happy to create a sensation over this from time to time.

In 2004, WHO (World Health Organization) brought out a report entitled: What are Electromagnetic Fields: Health Effects. According to this report telephone masts have no effect upon the well-being of human beings. Furthermore, this report was endorsed by the scientific advisory body of the European Parliament on the grounds that the manner in which the waves are emitted nowadays is far safer than it was in the past. In America the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) came to a similar conclusion. And since different scientists across the globe have all arrived at the same results in relation to the same phenomena, there would appear to be little to worry about. Unfortunately life is not so simple. All the bodies that have decided that cell phones and the relay stations are safe are affiliated with the authorities who have a vested financial and political interest in finding such a result.

These accusations may sound like they are the stuff that thrillers or TV movies are made of rather than real life. However, despite the melodramatic element these claims cannot be dismissed so easily. For all the research that claims cell phones are harmless and safety precautions are in place, there is just as much scientific data to prove this is not so. One of the most challenging questioners is Dr. George Carlo, who used to work for the cell phone companies, but who resigned when his research could not be published, because it did not give his employers – the cell phone companies – the results they wanted.

Dr. Carlo pointed out how the same level of skepticism once existed about smoking leading to lung cancer and it took many years to prove the point. In fact the parallel is very apt, since it was only with time that the long term results could no longer be confounded. He believes the same may turn out to be the case with cell phones, but the potential health problems would be on a far larger scale since 1.9 billion people globally use cell phones. Hence any health problems they create would be of pandemic proportions.

Australian National University conducted a research project on people who had been using cell phones for the past ten years. Their final report in 2009, showed a connection between brain cancer and prolonged usage of cell phones. These results are very disturbing and as the National Cancer Institute pointed out there are three major aspects that need to be reconsidered. The number of cell phone users, the length of time the phones are in use and the susceptibility of the tissues near the ear to absorb the waves that are emitted by the phones. According to The American Cancer Association, there is also a difference between different phones and hence which kind of phone or whether it is a hands free device, is important.

A major reason for these conflicting reports as to whether cell phones are dangerous or not is due to the fact that they have not been around long enough for the full impact to be revealed. At present the Australian research on people using them for ten years is the longest time that has been measured. Not does this research take into account the incremental increase in usage over the past three to four years. And since the long term effects cannot as yet be calculated, Dr. Carlo’s suggestion that we take certain precautions, such as, not allowing children under ten to use a cell phone, is sensible. The campaign conducted by Oprah Winfrey to try and get people to pledge that they will not talk on the phone while driving, even on a hands free set, is also sensible. And if everyone can agree on these two principles, it is a least a place to start until we have more long-term data.

Sage Associates recently published “An Assessment of the EPRI Technical Report An Investigation of Radiofrequency Fields Associated With the Itron Smart Meter – Richard Tell Associates, Inc., December, 2010 by Sage Associates, November 11, 2011″

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) commissioned a report by Richard Tell Associates Inc. that has assessed radiofrequency (RF) emissions from an Itron ‘smart meter’. The Itron meter is being installed in California by two electric utilities (SCE and SDG&E) and is similar to others being installed by other utilities. EPRI bases its report primarily on field measurements at the Itron meter test farms in southern California and South Carolina, two homes in Downey, CA, a drive-around street test in Downey, CA, and test results from two utilities. http://emfsafetynetwork.org/?p=6455

The EPRI report concludes that no violations of current FCC public safety limits are predicted to occur. However, our analysis shows that this conclusion is unsupported and in error, according to the FCC OET Bulletin 65 rules for predicting public exposures.

The EPRI report does not address compliance of multiple meters, at 100% duty cycle (which is required under FCC OET 65 formulas), and our calculations show violations at 60% reflection factor (the lowest level the FCC regulations specify). Multiple meters will also violate FCC OET 65 public safety limits for calculations using 50% to 100% duty cycle at 100% reflection factor, which are reasonable, worst-case assumptions.

The EPRI report provides a generic, best-case assessment of RF emissions since it focuses on ‘typical’ meters rather than a broad range of conditions of location, installation and operation of Itron meters under real-world conditions. It does not provide a reasonable, worst-case analysis, nor take into account the way in which utilities are actually locating meters in neighborhoods, nor address that the public cannot be excluded from very close proximity to meters on their own homes.

The author says that only approximations of RF exposures for ‘typical’ meters, in ‘common’ installations applying to ‘common’ exposures of individuals, are ‘likely’ to comply with FCC exposure limits. This report ignores meters that are being installed outside these highly limiting parameters, where duty cycles may be far higher, installations within or very close to occupied spaces of a home, and where there may be less shielding and more reflection of building materials that amplify exposures rather than reduce them. Tell discusses many problems with predicting RF emissions and the need for long-term statistical monitoring of matured (read fully deployed and operational) smart meter networks across regions. He says this testing cannot be done today.

Utilities are hoping for the best, and deploying at full speed, regardless of the clear ‘between-the-lines’ warnings, from their own highly regarded expert.

Deploying millions of wireless utility meters on such limited testing and questionable assertions of safety is unwise. Given that RF has recently been classified as a Possible Human Carcinogen, and this wireless utility meter initiative imposes the most extensive RF blanket yet created over every living resident that is electrified, ratepayers and the decision-makers will not know what irretrievable commitments of health and resources have been made until it is too late. Where even the best industry study cannot give more reliable and defensible evidence of compliance with FCC safety limits, public utility commissions should halt the rollout, pending demonstration that RF emissions meet FCC public safety limits under a reasonable worst-case assessment as determined by FCC OET 65 formulas. As a consequence, no positive assertion of safety can be made by the parties involved in this issue, nor are any solid answers provided by this EPRI report.

A group of parents in a school district north of Toronto kept their children out of school Wednesday to protest the use of Wi-Fi in classrooms. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/story/2011/11/23/toronto-york-wifi.html

About 40 people, including a dozen kids from Grades 1 to 5, joined a picket line outside the York Region District School Board offices in Aurora, spokeswoman Christine Marrin said.

Parents are concerned that Wi-Fi could be exposing their children to radiation six hours a day, five days a week, for 40 weeks of the year, she said.

“There have been no studies on children to determine whether that level of exposure for that length of time is safe,” said Marrin. Earlier this year, the World Health Organization warned about a possible link between radiation from wireless devices such as cellphones and cancer.

Some believe wireless access to the Internet could pose similar risks. But while Health Canada cautioned parents to limit the use of cellphones by children, it said that based on scientific evidence, low-level exposure to Wi-Fi is not dangerous.

Marrin says it’s too early to make that determination.
“This is the first generation of children that has been in that particular learning environment, so how Health Canada can say that it’s safe is really quite a mystery to us,” she said.

The Ontario government said in June it would examine the WHO warning but wouldn’t take any immediate action to require warnings on wireless devices. The legislative buildings in Toronto will themselves soon have Wi-Fi.

Ontario Education Minister Laurel Broten says it’s up to school boards in the province to make decisions about whether to use Wi-Fi or not.
“The best available information clearly indicates at this point in time that it is safe,” said Broten.

“I am not a scientist but I can tell you it is important to us that our schools are safe and we believe that school boards each and every day make decisions to make sure that kids are safe in their schools.”
NDP Leader Andrea Horwath says she realizes many parents are concerned about the issue.

“It’s worth keeping an eye on,” she said.
Some Canadian private schools and at least one public school board in British Columbia have removed or strictly limited Wi-Fi due to safety concerns. But York Region and many other public school boards across Canada continue to use it.

“They are very firm in their position, they are standing behind Health Canada’s assertion that Wi-Fi is safe for children. Of course, we disagree,” said Marrin, adding the concerned parents have been asking for a face-to-face meeting with the York board.

The digital age has left men’s nether parts in a squeeze, if you believe the latest science on semen, laptops and wireless connections.

In a report in the venerable medical journal Fertility and Sterility, Argentinian scientists describe how they got semen samples from 29 healthy men, placed a few drops under a laptop connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi and then hit download.

Four hours later, the semen was, eh, well-done.
A quarter of the sperm were no longer swimming around, for instance, compared to just 14 percent from semen samples stored at the same temperature away from the computer.
And nine percent of the sperm showed DNA damage, three-fold more than the comparison samples.

The culprit? Electromagnetic radiation generated during wireless communication, say Conrado Avendano of Nascentis Medicina Reproductiva in Cordoba and colleagues.

“Our data suggest that the use of a laptop computer wirelessly connected to the internet and positioned near the male reproductive organs may decrease human sperm quality,” they write in their report.
“At present we do not know whether this effect is induced by all laptop computers connected by Wi-Fi to the internet or what use conditions heighten this effect.”
A separate test with a laptop that was on, but not wirelessly connected, found negligible EM radiation from the machine alone.
The findings fuel concerns raised by a few other research teams.

Some have found that radiation from cell phones creates feeble sperm in the lab, for example. And last year urologists described how a man’s sitting with a laptop balanced on his knees can crank up the temperature of his scrotum to levels that aren’t good for sperm. So between the heat and the radiation from today’s electronic devices, testicles would seem to be hard-pressed.

But that is not at all clear, said Dr. Robert Oates, who has managed to father two kids despite having both a laptop and an iPad.
The president of the Society for Male Reproduction and Urology, Oates told Reuters Health he doesn’t believe laptops are a significant threat to male reproductive health.

“This is not real-life biology, this is a completely artificial setting,” he said about the new study. “It is scientifically interesting, but to me it doesn’t have any human biological relevance.”

He added that so far, no study has ever looked at whether laptop use has any influence on fertility or pregnancy outcomes.
“Suddenly all of this angst is created for real-life actual persons that doesn’t have to be,” said Oates, also of Boston Medical Center.
According to the American Urological Association, nearly one in six couples in the US have trouble conceiving a baby, and about half the time the man is at the root of the problem.
While the impact of modern technology is still murky, lifestyle does matter, researchers say.

Earlier this month, a report in Fertility and Sterility showed that men who eat a diet rich in fruit and grains and low in red meat, alcohol and coffee have a better shot at getting their partner pregnant during fertility treatment. “You should be keeping yourself healthy,” including staying lean, eating healthy foods, exercising, not taking drugs and not smoking, agreed Oates.
And for those laptop worries, he mused, “I don’t know how many people use laptops on their laps anyway.”
