For many years scientists, doctors, average citizens of earth, and others have seen and heard of the health risks associated with cell phone use and how possibly brain tumors and other forms of other cancers and illnesses can be related directly to using them.
Just this year the Interphone study, an international research project that has been ongoing for many years, finally released data that backs the findings of others that said cell phones are dangerous for everyone and should be of concern to anyone, especially users of more than average use.

Even with that information, CEFALO a case study conducted in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Switzerland had been working on determining if children from 7-19 years of age who were diagnosed with a brain tumor between 2004 and 2008 were related to cell phone use. They just released their report today in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute “Mobile Phone Use and Brain Tumors in Children and Adolescents: A Multicenter Case–Control Study”

The report was summarized by the group as not showing any significant causes of cell phone use in children who used cell phones and happen to have brain tumors. Yet everyone who actually read the report said they seemed to disagree with the summary of it that was presented to the public. The paper will appear in the August 17th issue ofJNCI. It is reported by many in the industry that the CEFALO study fell short of meeting its necessary 550 cases of children to study versus the 352 that were. A significant statistical difference would have been seen according to the reports. Even members of the CEFALO study, Martin Roosli and Robert Tarone, said they believe there is some systematic error and if asked to do this kind of study again that they would not do it and prefer to do a prospective studies case in which it would make more sense to clarify the data. They stated that was a lot of the confusion in the Interphone study that was previously released already and saw many headaches with agreements on the data.

Practically no doctor or researcher actually believes these studies are representing the data correctly and believe the other types of future studies will once and for all put the matter to rest, as least for recognizing the need at a national or worldwide safety regulation stance to make it clear what is really being seen.

Doctors and researchers who see real life data do recommend that children under 12 should not use cell phones except for an emergency. Keeping it turned off until they need to use it is the best way. Although most people know children unsupervised will more than likely try to use them. Once the data is 100% settled and not misconstrued by the telecommunications industries, safety, and regulatory parties, even then it will take time to convince children and parents that they should take precautionary measures.

It is known the amount of radiation that enters a child’s brain from a cell phone is double the amount that enters adults during cell phone usage. The questions have centered around was the type of radiation dangerous and that has been proven. The only thing not completely settled is a study showing the two related. As mentioned, for over 10-20 years now telecommunications companies, governments, safety and health organizations have been infiltrated with lobbyist who have been able to hold back or prevent the studies from releasing data at all or with misinformation. The responsibility, as has been for many years, is in the hands of the everyday citizen to monitor these studies and take matters in their own hands, just try to minimize the cell phone use in those hands.

WHO warning of brain cancer risk for mobile phone users had left many people alarmed over the issue but resigned to needing the devices to do their jobs.

“It’s really scaring me. Usually, I put it on a speaker, or I only use it in an emergency. And it is really scary because of my kids,” Milite Andom, 49, a street vendor with teenaged children, told AFP.
“They talk too much on their cells (mobiles), and I was telling my kids, but they do not want to hear it,” Andom added.

The WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) announced Tuesday after meeting in France that radio-frequency electromagnetic fields generated by such devices are “possibly carcinogenic to humans.”

The IARC cautioned that current scientific evidence showed only a possible link, not a proven one, between wireless devices and cancers.

But the news was jarring to people whose lives have changed dramatically in recent years with the personal convenience of the cellphone, to the point where many spend hours with the devices pressed to their heads, day in and day out.

When setting up homes, many people forgo traditional land lines, cells pressed to the ear.

There are now about five billion mobile phones registered in the world, their use so ubiquitous that they have begun to eclipse traditional landlines. Worldwide mobile sales increased 32 percent last year, tracking firms say.

But health experts said it was still unclear what might happen with greater exposure over longer periods.

“Everything new, they just throw it out there with no real testing. And 10 years later they tell you it is all bad for you,” sighed bike messenger David Daudu, 31, who spends more than 12 hours a day on the street and on the phone.

Asked if the warning might change his habits, Daudu was clear: “I have no option, workwise.”

His sentiments were echoed by construction foreman Michael Harris, 41.

“What are you going to do?,” asked Harris, who spends hours every day receiving and relaying instructions, cell at his ear.

“You want to try to stay healthy, but this is the way business is being done today.

Some mobile users reluctant to change their phone habits said they hoped someone would hurry up and disprove the WHO findings.

“Two weeks from now, they’ll probably come out with (a study) rebutting it,” quipped bank teller Nick Bolden, 25.

The US Centers for Disease Control maintains that research so far does not lean toward a significant association between cell phone use and health effects.

Bernadette Burden, a spokeswoman for the Atlanta-based agency, said of the new report: “We take research seriously. And our experts here are going to examine it very carefully.”

Burden noted the phone-use potential risk level announced by the WHO was in the same class as that of coffee.

Yet she told AFP: “We recognize that it is a very serious issue.”
