Part of me definitely want to, that we know the answer to this question is to convince enough people to refrain from talking on a cell phone while driving. Nothing is more frustrating to see on the road to bad driving behavior, to see the drivers blabbing on a cell phone. We also know that driving while talking on the phone is equivalent to driving with an illegal blood alcohol concentrate in terms of reaction time on the road.

People killed in traffic accidentssomeone talking on a phone. I was stopped in a car accident about 3 years ago, when I talk about a woman on her cell phone behind. It is now forbidden to talk on the phone while driving in California and other states are just as contagious. We also know that a telephone headset or speaker does not reduce the risk of accidents. But I digress, we should talk about brain tumors.

According to the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association, American2200000000000 spent minutes on their cell phones in 2008, an increase of 100 billion minutes on the previous year. Mobile phones are more and more advanced in their abilities and at the same time, increasing their production of radio-frequency. Some studies have shown an increase in brain tumors on the same side of the head where the user holds the mobile phone shown, but other studies have shown no association.

A 2009 study looked at 23 studies of 38,000 individuals and found noConnection between cell phone use and brain tumors. However, there was a subset analysis of eight studies that have shown an increase of 10-30% of long-term risk of cancer than people who rarely used a cell phone.

The European Environment Agency has warned and stood before the use of mobile phones in children because their whole lives ahead of them with exposure to radio frequency and radiation. John Bucher, deputy director of the NationalToxicology Program, said before the Senate Health and Human Services Committee. He said that cell phone radiation penetrates deeper into the brain of a child by the configuration of a young, growing skull.

Professor Lennart Hardell, a Swedish researcher who is at the forefront of mobile phone radiation and research on brain cancer risk. He found an increased risk of brain tumors of 10 or more years of use of mobile phones. Several studiesthey have been published with the following key findings:
For every 100 hours of use of mobile phones increases the risk of brain tumors by 5%. For each year of use, the risk of brain cancer increased by 8%.
Use after 10 years or more digital cellular, there is the danger greater than 280% of brain tumors.
For digital mobile phone users who were teenagers or younger when they started using mobile phones, there was a 420%increased risk of brain tumors.

Since there are contradictory statements? It is particularly interesting involved and who funded the studies in question? Research by Dr. Hardell’s very exciting and I am inclined to European studies, American studies and the trust because it is usually less than a money trail in Europe. There is a lot to earn money with your phone, and we live in a country where the bottom line means everything.

Moreover, because they clearly stated in the finePrinting of manuals Telephone caution with regard to radio frequencies and warnings on how to keep the phone away from the body to use as much as possible? Radiation increases with the square of the distance from the phone. The phone is further away from the body, the less radiation exposure. An example is the Blackberry 8300, which states clearly: “If all data on the BlackBerry device, with or without a USB cable, hold the device least.98 inches from your body and should not be wornor worn on the body. “It is quite clear to me that the mobile phone manufacturers know the potential dangers of radiation.

Dr. Devra Lee Davis is director of the Center for Environmental Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute and author of the disconnect: The truth about cell phone radiation, what the industry has to hide it, and how to protect your family.

He has testified before Congress on this subject and has published numerousArticle as well. We recommend the following to reduce the risks:
Put your phone in “flight” or “off-line” if transport, storage load, or you. This prevents electromagnetic radiation.
Carry your cell phone on your body and place it firmly to the body during the night.

Use a wired headset (not Bluetooth!) Or speaker-phone mode to the phone as far away as possible from the body to hold during the call.

Switch sides regularly while the headto speak.
Use text messaging instead of talking.
Choose a device with the lowest possible value. SAR stands for Specific Absorption Rate, a measure of the strength of electromagnetic fields.

Children should only use the phone near their heads for emergencies. SMS from the body it is safer for children than talking on a mobile phone.

Avoid using the phone while the signal is weak or when moving at high speed, like a car or train. This increases the performance byTelephone in an attempt to stay in touch.

Until more research is funded by the telephone industry to treat it as if cell phone radiation is indeed harmful to my health. And “better safe than sorry, and studies show an increased risk of brain tumors are, to simply ignore too convincing. Use the simple steps described in this article, and then choose a phone with low SAR in order to protect themselves from potential damage.

Everyone has one, whether it is a smart phone or a small Motorola. Cell phones offer convenience, a way to stay connected to family and friends, along with added security in the event of an emergency. But, could there be a danger hiding in your phone?
Cell phones emit radiofrequency (RF) radiation and several past studies have proved this can be a known carcinogen and can cause tumors.

Cell phones emit two types of electro-magnetic fields (EMF); microwaves from the antenna and extremely-low fields (ELF) from the body of the phone, which is the radiofrequency type of radiation.

Recently, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a component of the World Health Organization, has classified radiofrequency fields as “possibly carcinogenic to humans.” Several international studies show that there is a link between brain and salivary gland cancer with increased cell phone use. But according to the World Health Organization more long-term health studies need to be conducted.

Scientist Dr. Martin Blank, associate professor of physiology and cellular biophysics at Columbia University in Manhattan has been researching electro-magnetic fields (EMF) for over 25 years.
“Our body reacts to EMF as potentially harmful,” Blank told The Christian Post. “The accepted safe level for RF range is 0.4W/kg and most public exposure levels of cell towers and antennas are at 0.8W/kg based on a SAR (specific absorption rate) of 4W/kg as the level at which adverse effects are said to be determined.”

Yet, there are other opinions within the cellular industry depicting that RF radiation levels are below the dangers levels. Dan Collins, chief technical officer from the Pinnacle Telecom Group, a New Jersey based independent firm providing technical services nationwide to the telecommunications industry said that all cell towers and cell phones comply with FCC regulations.

“The latest reports from the World Health Organization are inclusive and a lot more research has to be done about any carcinogenic effects from cell phones or antennas,” Collins explained to The Christian Post. “SAR rates are higher in smart phones, but we do not know if that is harmful. There are 4-5 billion cell phone users worldwide and smart phones just came out in the market, so we do not have all the data yet on these devices. We would need over 10 years to really look into any harmful effects from this technology.”

Dr. George Carlo, a public health scientist and founder of the Science and Public Policy Institute in Washington D.C. says children are particularly susceptible to the radiation generated by cell phones because their brains are still growing.

“Cell phones can disrupt cardiac pacemakers, it compromises the blood-brain barrier and most startling it inflicts genetic damage and that is a known diagnostic marker for cancer,” said Carlo.
According to a nationwide study, the Global System for Mobile Communication may be connected with an increase in brain tumors, seizures and headaches (The Lancet 2000; 356:1833-1836).

The FDA and the FCC recently suggested ways to reduce radiofrequency exposure by using a hands-free device or cut down on phone usage.

“It is utterly irresponsible for the wireless industry to continue their misrepresentation of the science to facilitate misleading claims about safety,” Carlo told The Christian Post.

Let’s face it…we love our cell phones. Whether we use them for business or just to keep in touch with family and friends, for most of us, they have become indispensable. Nonetheless, there are new warnings about the health risks associated with cell phone use that consumers need to be aware of.

In May, after a thorough review of the existing research, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), part of the World Health Organization (WHO), classified cell phones as “possibly carcinogenic to humans” and acknowledged that the radiation emitted from cell phones may increase an individual’s risk of brain cancer. Prior to this announcement, the WHO had maintained the position that no adverse health problems had been confirmed.

In one of the largest international studies undertaken, scientists found the rate of brain glioma (a type of tumor) doubled in individuals who used a cell phone for 10 years or more.
Now another potential health problem associated with cell phones is gaining attention. Researchers in Austria compared cell phone users to non-users and have found cell phone use capable of damaging sperm production and may be a contributing factor in male infertility.

This is not the first study that linked cell phones and male sterility. A number of earlier studies have come to similar conclusions. In 2005 researchers found the radio-frequency radiation produced by mobile phones had “a significant genotoxic [DNA-damaging] effect on …spermatozoa” in mice. A subsequent mouse study in 2007 found “significantly higher incidence of sperm cell death” and suggested “carrying cell phones near reproductive organs could negatively affect sperm quality” in men and may “impair male fertility.”

What is less clear is the impact cell phone radiation may have on disrupting embryonic development and whether the damaged sperm DNA may affect the development of a conceived fetus and possibly result in a newborn being more vulnerable to disease—such as childhood cancer—or other birth defects.

Nearly 10 percent of couples of childbearing age in the U.S., experience difficulty conceiving, almost half are the result of male infertility. The inability to conceive can be a heartbreaking and relationship-threatening problem facing over 6 million couples.
Consumers need to understand all the potential health problems that could occur from long-term cell phone radiation exposure.
Despite these health concerns, it is unlikely that any of us are going to give up our cell phones. What we can do, however, is educate ourselves about which cell phones are the safest—having a lower SAR [specific absorption rate] value—take precautions and use them more wisely.

Check out your cell phone radiation ranking at the Environmental Working Group’s Cell Phone Shopping Guide. You may want to switch to a phone with a lower SAR.

• Text whenever possible.
• Hold your phone away from your body and use the speakerphone setting, a headset or Bluetooth device. Remove headset when not on a call (some wireless devices emit low-level radiation too!)
• Keep your cell phone away from your body…away from your ear and not in your pants pocket where radiation can be absorbed into your body’s tissue.
• Cell phones emit more radiation when trying to connect to cellular towers. Avoid using cell phones in buildings, elevators, and in rural areas where signals are weak if you want to reduce radiation exposure.

Parents also need to educate their children about cell phones. So many are beginning their cell phone use at a much earlier age when their skulls are thinner thus exposing them to a lifetime of potentially harmful radiation…far more years than their parent’s generation.

The question of whether cellphone use causes brain tumours remains unsettled after the results of a major study on almost 13,000 cellphone users over 10 years.
The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer study called INTERPHONE found most cellphone use didn’t increase the risk of developing meningioma, a common and frequently benign tumour, or glioma, a rarer but deadlier form of cancer.

“I think the results are tantalizing in the sense that overall we’re not seeing evidence of an increased risk,” said Prof. Daniel Krewski of the University of Ottawa, a Canadian member of the study group. “But … in this one exposure group, the 1,640-plus cumulative call hours, a possible increased risk in glioma.”
“We’re not sure about the significance of those results because some of the people in that category reported usage levels which were somewhat improbable.”

Handsets and texting have changed how people use cellphones, which are now less-often held against the head. (CBC) The overall findings are “comforting” from a public health point of view, but the possible increased risk of glioma among heavy users talking for more than 30 minutes per day on the same side of the head warrants a closer look, Krewski said.

The authors noted that “biases and error prevent a causal interpretation” that would directly blame radiation for the tumour.
The paper, published in the International Journal of Epidemiology, was compiled by researchers in 13 countries including Britain, Canada, France, Germany and Japan. The study looked at almost 13,000 participants, including 2,409 meningioma cases and 2,662 matched controls of the same age, gender and location, and 2,708 glioma cases with 2,972 matched controls.
It takes 10 to 20 years for many tumours in the head and neck areas to develop, which is why the study was designed to follow so many users.

Difficult to interpret
The potential effects of using hands-free devices during calls or the risk of having cellphones nearby, such as in a pocket, were not examined. Researchers mainly relied on people to recall their cellphone use. For some groups, cellphone use appeared to lessen the risk of developing cancers, which the researchers called “implausible.”

A separate study will look into the effects of cellphone use on children. (David Kohl/Associated Press) One explanation is that cellphone users may be healthier, but a more likely reason is people showing manifestations of neurological disease use cellphones less, Rodolfo Saracci of Italy’s National Research Council and Jonathan Samet of the University of Southern California’s department of preventive medicine said in a journal commentary accompanying the study.
“For the time being, INTERPHONE’s findings, interpreted in the context of prior studies, tells us that the question as to whether mobile phone use increases risk for brain cancers remains open,” Saracci and Samet wrote.

“The tired refrain ‘more research is needed’ fully applies in this instance: without more research the public’s question about the acceptability of cancer risk from mobile phones will remain unanswered.”

Texting changes cellphone usage
Last month, European scientists launched what will be the largest study into the long-term effects of cellphone use. The study aims to track at least a quarter of a million people in Europe for up to 30 years in real time. A separate study will look into the effects of cellphone use on children, who are believed to be more susceptible to the effects of radiation.

“It’s kind of embarrassing as a scientist to say we’ve just spent 12 years and 20 million euros and we think there’s not much of a risk there, but we’re not entirely sure,” Krewski acknowledged of the research so far, which included almost $2 million in Canadian funding.

At this point, researchers don’t have a plausible biological mechanism by which radio frequency fields could increase cancer risk in humans, said epidemiologist Dr. Mary McBride of the B.C. Cancer Agency, another Canadian member of the study.
“The way in which people use cellphones today and the number of users has certainly changed since the study data were collected,” said McBride. “In particular the exposure levels by using handsets and by texting are less than by holding the phone up to one’s ear.”

Precaution options
Both the study’s authors and the International EMF Collaborative, which wrote a counterview to the study, pointed to flaws in the research.

“When randomly selected controls are asked if they would like to participate in a ‘mobile phone’ study, they are far more likely to agree if they use mobile phones than if they don’t, and if they do not use a mobile phone, they are likely to refuse participation,” the counterview said.

The counterview authors also noted the study did not consider other sources of radio frequency radiation such as cordless phones, calling the five-year results “woefully inadequate as a gauge of risk today.”

“Four billion people own mobile phones worldwide; many of those users are children,” said Eileen O’Connor, director of the Radiation Research Trust and member of the International EMF Collaborative.
“Responsible governments must advocate for public transparency of risks so that an informed public may have more options to exercise precaution,” O’Connor added in a statement.

In these days of health scare headlines, the fact that many of us have mobiles attached to our hips when not stuck on our ears is giving some cause for concern, especially as the potential exists, supposedly for brain damage, possibly cancerous, from prolonged contact with the cell phone.

Various studies have been conducted, suggesting at possible links between heavy cell phone use and illness, but a recently released book, The 4 hour body, authored by Tim Feriss, talks about the previously unsuspected risk involved in keeping cell phones in pockets, close to our bodies, for long periods daily.

You need to be a little afraid, because a recent post on Yahoo health, about the 2010 Interphone study, stated that those who have the mobile at their ear for half-an-hour daily, over ten years, are 40% more likely to contract a brain tumour of the type that killed Teddy Kennedy, the Glioma.

You could say that the smallness of most cell phones would prohibit them giving off big enough doses of radiation to seriously affect the user, but all effects talked about are long-term ones, especially important to those who spend thei8r waking hours with the devices apparently glued to the sides of their heads. There is, it would appear, a clear and future danger inherent in such over-use.

There has to be, according to the book by Tim Ferriss, a genuine danger, for young men, that keeping the cell phone in the front trouser pockets, as many do, could potentially be posing a threat in terms of irradiating the testicles gradually, causing testicular cancer, eventually, though this as yet just theoretical, but having other, more chilling effects in the meantime.

It is obviously not yet known what long-term effects will truly be, because the use of these technologies to the present day extent has been slowly building for the past decade, so it may be another ten to fifteen years before definitive results appear, but there is little doubt that the popularity of wifi and other such devices are causing exposure levels unknown to past generations

There are current measurements, from various studies, proving that health problems can be caused through over-use of mobile phones. One study on rats showed that testosterone levels plummeted, in males exposed to the same levels radiated by average cell phones for a four week period at thirty minutes daily. The same undoubtedly happens to male humans, and testosterone is vital to your sexuality.

Tim Ferriss took this a stage further, wanting to see if sperm counts and motility were subject to the influence of the slight radioactive signals, and discovered that seven tenths of European studies carried out came to the damning conclusion that there was indeed a detrimental effect on sperm from the mobile phone radiation emissions.

An avid user of his own device, Tim went and got his own sperm count test, finding his numbers at surprisingly low levels. On reflection, he realized that he was indeed guilty of keeping the phone in a front pocket for up to twelve hours daily, and repeated sperm count tests, over the following years, showed ever-diminishing numbers.

Having seen all the research data on this topic, Tim elected to experiment over a three-month trial, in which he would carry his cell phone in his pocket no more, keeping it well away from his testicles. The device was kept either in the back ocket when out, or at arm’s length when indoors, though mostly kept turned off when about his person.

Since sperm production in human males is a process taking some nine weeks, the three month trial seemed appropriate, and the sperm count test results at the end of it were astonishing, in that the volume of ejaculate was almost 50% higher, while the incidence of motile sperm per milliliter was 100% higher, and the incidence of motile sperm per ejaculate almost twice as high.

Whilst this is hardly definitive, with some variables, there is little doubt that the effect of keeping the mobile well away from your reproductive organ is very good, improving dramatically your chances of fathering healthy children, should that be your wish in the future. The dangers for women are less clear as yet, but defective sperm could have a knock-on effect on unborn children, so being safe is always the best bet.

Electro-Magnetic Frequency dangers also occur with other wireless devices, such as Wifi, and never using a laptop actually on your lap seems another wise precaution. Try using a wired, or Ethernet internet connections, or mobile broadband instead. Surrendering the cell phone is simply not an option for most people, but sensible use of it could be very good for your future heath and sexual prowess as a man.

This genuinely is not scare-mongering on my part, more a simple commentary on disturbing facts that have recently started coming to light. The more we advance technologically, the greater the risk that we inadvertently subject ourselves to unknown dangers, so being careful in the way we conduct ourselves makes sense. Nothing wrong with having a mobile man, just watch out where you stash it.

An app with a positive impact for the user Friedlander and his staff of six in the Tel Aviv suburb of Herzliya have been working on the Tawkon technology for 18 months now, going live with the still unclear iPhone version earlier this month. The app will be marketed direct to consumers via the various hardware manufacturers’ app stores for just under $10 a download.

Down the road, Friedlander says, he would be “delighted to partner with cellphone operators,” where he believes that a tool to bring real value and safety to customers would be an absolute win/win. “We are aware that it’s challenging for them,” Friedlander admits. “For many years, they’ve just not addressed the issue.”
Friedlander is originally from Canada and studied at McGill University in Montreal. Tawkon has raised money from private investors in Canada, the US and Israel. Is he looking for larger investors? Probably not. “I don’t see the company as a big venture capital play,” he tells ISRAEL21C. “It’s not a very capital intensive business. We don’t require tens of millions of dollars.”

If the app sells well – and Friedlander reports that the company has received thousands of inquiries since the TechCrunch blog about technology startups broke the story of the Apple ban – a small company like Tawkon could do quite well for its owners, partners and employees. The press is certainly interested. Tawkon has been inundated with press requests, from the Washington Post in the US to Channel 2 and The Marker business and technology print and online newspaper in Israel.

With the total number of cellphones in use said to be some four billion, and of these half a billion smart phones, Friedlander is optimistic that “it’s almost like an endless market.”
Ultimately, Tawkon is not all about the money. “Most of the time, you develop and sell a technology that reduces costs for a phone operator,” Friedlander says. “We were looking for something that can make an impact on the wellbeing of our friends, family and community. Being able to help the user is very important. We saw a real opportunity.”

When the media fixates on a medical topic, doctors know that a flurry of patient questions will inevitably follow. So it helps to be prepared with responses to hot-button questions, such as those surrounding the recent resurgence of the potential link between cell phones and brain cancer. Inspired by the World Health Organization moving the radiofrequency magnetic fields produced by cell phones to the classification of “possibly” causing cancer in late May, some newspapers handled the topic with subtle headlines like IS YOUR CELL PHONE KILLING YOU?. Though the fevered media response of some outlets was countered by thoughtful explainers from other sources, many physicians will surely still face questions from patients on the topic. But how does a busy doctor brush up on the extensive literature testing the link between cell phones and cancer?

A: You attend a literature review talk, such as the one given by hematology/oncology fellow Daniel Geynisman at Monday’s installment of the department’s weekly seminar. In half an hour, Geynisman sped through the most important studies examining cell phones and brain cancer, drawing out the important results, criticisms, and implications of the experiments. The primary message was simple – there’s no need to panic, or to go back to using exclusively landlines and pagers. But a true danger does exist with cell phones, Geynisman said, one that’s worth sending a warning to patients – and doctors themselves.

The lingering mystery around cell phones and cancer is caused by an epidemiological quirk, Geynisman explained. Proving the link between a rare exposure and a rare cancer – such as asbestos and mesothelioma – is relatively straightforward. Finding a link between a common exposure and a common cancer is more difficult, but can be done, as it was with smoking and lung cancer. But conclusively proving the connection between a common exposure, such as cell phones, with a rare cancer, such as glioma or acoustic neuroma, is much more difficult. Only about 10,000 new cases of glioma are diagnosed each year in the United States, while more than 300 million cell phones are currently in use in the country. To prove that the use of phones significantly increases brain cancer rates, enormous numbers of subjects would have to be collected and followed.

Those challenges have forced most researchers into a flawed study design, Geynisman said. Retrospective case control studies are commonly used in epidemiology, but are subject to an important confounding factor called recall bias. If you ask 3,000 people with brain tumors and 3,000 controls about their history of cell phone use, those with cancer are more likely to remember and report unusually high amounts of use. In one study, subjects were found to over-estimate their cell phone use by almost three times, adding a hefty dose of salt to any case control results.

Despite this issue, early case control studies found a relative risk of 1, indicating no increased or decreased risk for brain tumors in users of cell phones. But the question did not go away, fueled by the research of a Swedish group who dialed the data down to find increased risk among very specific groups: people who used cell phones for more than 10 years, or people who started using the phones before the age of 20. The INTERPHONE study, which surveyed over 6,000 people with brain tumors and 7,000 controls from 13 countries, might have settled the dispute but for one result. Published last year, most of the risks calculated for various groups and tumors showed a negative association with cell phone use, suggesting (improbably) that talking on the phone protected against brain cancer. But one association still stuck out – heavy cell phone users showed a 40 percent increase in the risk of glioma.

Statistical anomaly, or cause for concern?
The result was apparently enough for the WHO to place cell phone radiation in the same group as other potentially carcinogenic compounds ranging from lead and coffee, and for more studies to be conducted, Geynisman said. After all, ubiquitous cell phone use is a relatively recent development, so more time may need to pass before the health effects can be accurately assessed.

A prospective study, called COSMOS, will tackle some of these questions, as it follows a quarter-million subjects for at least 25 years and measures cell phone use as it happens, instead of through memory. But while scientists, physicians, reporters, and the general public wait for those results, they can caution the world about the real dangers of cell phones, which have nothing to do with cancer.
“What’s not shaky is that cell phone users are four times more likely to be distracted drivers and texting poses a risk of 23 times more collisions. 81 percent of Americans use their cell phones while driving, and almost a third of crashes involve cell phones,” Geynisman said. “So you can keep using your cell phone probably, but don’t do it while driving.”

Cell phone health effects have become more of a concern as we become more tethered to the technology that keeps us in touch with friends and family worldwide. We use mobile phones to make calls, check email, and surf the net. Understanding what the concerns are and taking precautions will allow you to determine what’s best when using the beautiful obsession that has become most necessary for keeping you connected: your cell phone.

The radio frequencies that enable cell phones to operate is what raises suspicion among some cell phone users. Specifically, how much exposure to the frequencies you may be exposed to while using your phone. When you place or receive a call, the area you are located in has dedicated cell towers that dispatch and receive radio waves. It is these waves being absorbed by the body, most specifically the head area causing most of the uproar about cell phone health effects. Cancer and bran tumors are the largest elephants in the room, but headaches, dizziness, and memory loss are all valid concerns. Fertility issues also loom large, especially for men, who tend to carry their phones in their pockets.

Cell phone health effects are so controversial, some states are considering placing cancer-warning labels on cell phones as a precaution. The next cell phone you purchase may have a listing of how much radiation you could absorb by using a specific phone. Research shows a link to cancer in lab animals, but the exposure to cell phone radiation is of a much more extended rate than the average human would use the phone, at practically 24 hours. Most of us are not going to have a cell phone at our ears or in our pocket for 24 long hours.

The American Cancer Society is not ready to declare cell phones a major health hazard and in fact most of us are not ready to let go of that piece of us that has become an extra appendage. Curbing our extra usage is an option we could consider. The FCC makes it known that phones sold in the United States are safe, but it is up to the consumer to decide whether using a mobile phone is worth overriding the anxiety concerning cell phone health effects.

Other wireless devices:
Wireless (Wi-Fi) routers and other such devices are becoming increasingly common. The energy radiated from devices such as routers is far less than a mobile phone. But we tend to keep them on for far longer durations, sometimes days on end. The good part is; such devices are located far from your body unlike a mobile phone. It is; however, advisable to turn off such appliances when not in use and keep them at a distance.

What should we do? Do not worry, we will not tell you to abandon your precious wireless partner. But you can try to switch to a CDMA phone from GSM. Not only is CDMA a superior technology, it also emits much lesser radiation than a GSM phone. Use a landline when possible. We understand that it is not very hip. But think of it as a retro fashion statement, like using a typewriter. If you could reduce the time you spend on calls, there would be nothing like it. But there are alternates:
Texting rates have dropped like it is nobody’s business. There are also messengers that use GPRS for which most phones are enabled.

Using the speaker phone though it is not always a viable option but one could try it when alone.

A normal or Bluetooth hands-free is a more tenable option. Not only does it keep the radiation at a distance, it leaves your hands free for other tasks. Avoid keeping hands-free devices on for long as they emit low level radiation themselves and increase chances of ear infections.

While talking, keep the receiver as far away from your ear as possible. You know when you are in a crowded place or when the reception is bad; you speak into the mouth piece and only bring the phone to your ear when the other person is talking. It would be a good idea to do this all the time. This is because more energy is radiated when sending rather than receiving.

Avoid carrying it in your trouser or shirt pockets. Carry it in your bag/purse. When you are not travelling, keep it on a stand away from you. Many of us have a habit of keeping the mobile phone switched on and close to our heads while sleeping. Having a source of radiation close to your head during 6-8 hours of sleeping sounds like a bad idea, doesn’t it?

Avoid network cold spots as maximum amount of energy is radiated when a mobile phone is trying to make initial connection with the tower to make a call. By waiting till the connection is made and then bringing the handset close to your ear, you can avoid a lot of radiation. When in a parking lot or other enclosed location, one tends to press the phone against his/her ear all the more. The cell phone also has to try harder to connect to the tower. This further increases absorption of radiation by the brain. Whenever possible, try to make a call only when receiving decent network.

In Conclusion:
Most of us would be embarrassed to use a prosthetic but we happily carry our cell phones around all day, flaunt it even. I myself felt restless for the few days it took me to buy a new mobile phone when I decided to replace my old one. We do not have the time to start a family and raise kids but we give our gadget more attention than a toddler would ever require. The day when people enroll for mobile phone abuse rehab camps doesn’t seem far. That is why features such as this one are called for.

We have stayed cleared in this feature of sensational claims of brain tumors and the like. You will come across enough of those in e-mail forwards. But being aware of the risks is crucial. Children’s brains are more fragile and have higher water content. Damage caused by exposure to radiation at a young age can be deeper and more serious. Keep your kids from using mobile phones for as long as possible. You and me never had a pager till we were past college and we did just fine, didn’t we?
