Investigative journalists who begin to understand the scale of what is happening may be moved to a different assignment if they become too passionate about uncovering the truth especially if the wireless industry is paying for advertising.
Workers who become concerned about their exposure in the work place find their union bosses are more interested in their own careers and keeping well in with management. These union bosses won’t rock the boat. If monitoring of the workplace is permitted, a “specially selected” industry expert is hired to support the company line. So who is left? Who will speak out and do the right thing? Where are the heroes and heroines to tame the microwave dragon threatening the global village?

Whether you use wireless technology or not; whether you protest or not; whether you care or not . . . you are being exposed to radio frequency radiation and your exposure levels are increasing. You can move to the country and live with like-minded souls but antennas and smart meters are likely to follow you. Whether you become ill or not will depend on many things but once you become ill your quality of life will deteriorate and, if you live with others, their quality of life will be adversely affected as well.

Leaving the sanctuary of your home, if indeed you can make your home into a sanctuary, will be painful. Shopping, dining at restaurants, vacationing with family and friends will become a distant memory. No matter how much you enjoyed using your smart phone and your ipad, no matter how much you enjoyed surfing on the web, and no matter how much you enjoyed communicating with friends on facebook or skype these will no longer be possible . . . the pain, the confusion, the fatigue, the skin rashes, the dizziness and nausea, the ringing in the ears will become unbearable. You will find yourself in self-imposed exile with an ever-diminishing connection to the world.
Is the above a fairy tale? Not at all!

I know of politicians who are asking that warnings be placed on cell phones and that a moratorium be placed on deployment of smart meters until we learn more about the safety of this technology. They do this despite strong political pressure and industry lobbying.

I know of scientists who have lost their funding and their jobs. Many of them continue to do excellent work despite the threats and penalties.

I know of teachers who have been told not to publically oppose school policy about WiFi. Many continue their fight to remove WiFi from schools and some continue to speak out in public ignoring the threats.

I know of principals who have removed WiFi or won’t allow it in their school because their top priority is the health and safety of their students and staff.

I know of parents whose concerns for their child’s safety have been ignored. So they are now organizing other like-minded parents to make certain that their concerns are heard.

I know of many, many people who are sick because of their exposure to electrosmog, who feel better when they are not exposed and are trying to design safer sanctuaries for themselves at home and at work. Many of those who are beginning to recover are devoting time and using their experience to helping others.

I know of doctors who are successfully treating their electrically sensitive patients. Instead of prescribing pharmaceuticals, they advise their patients on how to reduce their exposure and build up the immune system and detoxify their bodies. Some keep a low profile because neither the medical association nor big Pharma support non-pharmaceutical interventions that interfere with profit. A few of these doctors are beginning to speak out publicly.

I know of a few exceptional lawyers who are now specializing in this field and are dedicated to helping the under privileged.

I know of a growing number of journalists who are doing excellent reporting on issues dealing with compact fluorescent light bulbs, WiFi, mobile phones, smart meters, ground current, antennas and power lines.
I know of union representatives who, despite a tough management, are responding to concerns about electrosmog exposure in the workplace.

I know of firefighters, brave men and women who rush into burning buildings to save strangers, who voted to prevent antennas on fire halls until they are shown to be safe.The tide is turning but it will take time before we have changes in policy and manufacturing guidelines . . . in the meantime individuals can make changes in their own environment. They can reduce their exposure before they become ill and they can learn and share information with others.

The microwave dragon will be tamed and the village will become safe once more or, at least, safer than it is right now. How quickly that will happen depends on the heroes and heroines, on those who place health and the quality of life above profit and greed. If we are lucky, captains of industry, government scientists and policy makers, as well as the engineers who design these devices will recognize that optimizing profit and health (of the workforce, of the public and of the environment) makes more sense than maximize profit alone. When that day comes we will have earned the name Homo sapiens sapiens.

As a scientist, who has been studying the biological and health effects of environmental contaminants since 1975, I am deeply disturbed with what I read in the scientific literature and what my own studies are showing about the harmful effects of electrosmog-a form of electromagnetic pollution generated by both wired and wireless devices.

Do I believe that world governments are trying to destroy the human race? No. I think people in positions of authority are simply ignorant of the facts or are aware of the facts but have no idea what to do about them or have been advised to do nothing for fear of legal repercussions. They are-at the very least-fools or cowards and-at the worst-criminals perpetrating crimes against humanity. One fact is that microwave radiation is killing people! In the long run-if we don’t change our ways-microwave radiation is likely to kill many more people than both cigarettes and asbestos combined. Is this fear-mongering or is it the truth? Time will tell.

We have evolved into a culture that worships money. We have industrial giants who do not care about the health and well-being of their customers or their workers and care only about making profit quickly. These industries are profit-junkies that give no thought to their destructive tendencies. Scientists who speak out about the harmful effects of electrosmog are ridiculed and attempts are made to discredit them by self-appointed skeptics who are NOT experts in the field. Industry meddling causes some scientists to lose their research funding or their jobs.

Industry scientists infiltrate health organizations and ensure that decisions are made to protect the health and profit of their industry. Physicists and engineers are making pronouncements about the safety of microwave technology as though they were medical doctors or experts in life sciences. Teachers who speak out about having WiFi in schools are reprimanded and ostracized. Those on limited-term appointments find their teaching contracts are not renewed. School boards threaten to expel students and to fine parents who want to protect their children against microwave radiation in the classroom. Is this anyway for a school board to act?

People who are sick have few places to turn. They need to figure out how to regain their health. Ill informed doctors recommend psychiatric treatment and ply their patients with painkillers, antidepressants, sleeping pills and anti-anxiety medication rather than getting to the route of their problems, which is often related to some source of electrosmog exposure at home or at work.

Trial lawyers seldom have a background in science and their attempts to understand complexities that only a few scientists understand is challenging. Industries hire the best lawyers money can buy who become experts in certain areas. They often out number and out wit the single lawyer and the law student who are trying to help someone living near a cell tower or near a power line, someone who can no longer work and cannot afford to pay legal fees.

Corporate lawyers are concerned about the long-term financial health of their corporations and may advise against producing products that generate lower emissions for fear of legal action against the earlier higher emitting devices.
Journalists are trained to give balanced reporting. They seldom have the time to investigate a story in detail and what appears on TV or in newspapers are sound bites that pit experts against each other claiming opposite effects and leaving the public baffled.

OVER five billion people use cell phones today. We are immersed in a sea of electromagnetic fields (EMFs) generated by electrical and wireless devices in our homes, offices, schools, cars, restaurants – just about everywhere.

In Pegeia, as elsewhere in Cyprus, more and more cell phone antennas are popping up in neighbourhoods. Along with this mushrooming of antennas, public reaction is starting to grow too. The recent furore over the new antennas installed in the occupied north, near the British Bases in Dhekelia, has missed the point. Aside from flexing its muscles as an occupying power, Turkey is doing what happens in every community, as industry and government dismiss concerns about a lack of research on long-term exposure and the laxity of regulations.

There are dangers over possible health effects of this massive human experiment, without due care for the precautionary principle, which has been adopted in Europe. This principle calls for care when there is insufficient scientific evidence to prove public safety. The example of inadequate regulation of cell phones is not the first time the public has been subjected to a biological experiment without informed consent.

To understand how “electrosmog” has developed, there is a revealing study, published by the Canadian Government’s National Research Council last November*. This 26-page, peer-reviewed scientific report details concerns for public safety and suggests that we don’t know how much exposure people experience and that current regulations are inadequate. The “gold standards” of scientific research, replication and control groups, have been conveniently ignored. Background levels of electropollution have increased by many thousands of times in the last decade, making exposure to long-term, low-level radiofrequency radiation (RFR) difficult to quantify. Basically, as we’re all immersed in constant EMF pollution, there is no longer a control group to study!

Moreover, original studies from the 1950s, on which current legislation is based, were never replicated and industrial/military interests dominated that research. These standards, incredibly, are based on the “thermal effect”, i.e., RFR’s ability to heat tissue. This ignores non-thermal effects and long-term exposure from multiple sources. The current standards for Europe -International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection or ICNIRP – date back to 1998 and are based on whole-body exposure over very short durations (minutes) and not on long-term, low-level exposures such as affect people on a daily basis. These standards do not take into account that children are more susceptible to damage from cell phone radiation as it penetrates deeper into their skulls and their brains absorb far more energy than those of an adult.

A new industry has developed over the last few decades that provides protection to sensitive people who have figured out that electrosmog is a factor in their ill health. An EMF consultant in the USA told me that he now has a different sort of client – wives of lawyers. It seems that hushed-up industry settlements are having an effect: lawyers’ families are scrambling to protect themselves from what they now know is a public health hazard. There are even a few towns in the USA that advertise “wi-fi free” and people are flocking to live there.

A few months ago in Pegeia, a Residents’ Initiative Group formed to protest the growing number of antennas. There is disquiet amongst Cypriots who report an increase in headaches and what appears to be a high number of cancer cases, especially among children. These are typical symptoms of EMF radiation, although it is too early yet to be certain of the cause of the illnesses.

A decade ago there were only a handful of studies that reported low-intensity biological effects. Currently, there are about 60 papers showing such effects from exposures at levels below existing guidelines. A 2004 Israeli study indicates an association between increased incidence of cancer and living in proximity to a cell phone base station (within a 350 metre half circle of the antennas). The Canadian NRC report states: “The measured level of RFR, between 0.3 to 0.5 ?W/cm2,was far below the thermal guidelines.” The Full Signal**, a 2010 DVD documentary, details this Israeli study and covers related issues in interviews with scientists in several countries.

As a Pegeia Councillor, I am anxious to see this situation handled properly. Pegeia Council agreed to investigate the residents’ complaints, presented at a Council meeting in October 2010. Research revealed that town planning and building permits are required for antennas. In Pegeia, seven of eight installed antennas are without building permits and several lack planning permission. Pegeia Council hired two consultants to measure EMF emissions in 10 locations in Pegeia, one from a private company and one from the University of Cyprus. A public meeting was held in December to present their findings. Predictably, all measurements were well within the current limits of the existing dangerously outdated legislation, often tens of thousands times below the standards. Several times during the meeting, the Mayor called for quiet from the audience, many of whom clearly were not satisfied with the lectures, which included slick Powerpoint presentations from the two representatives who carried out the measurements and from a Ministry of Communications official.

How Do I Measure EMFs?

A Gauss is a common unit of measurement of magnetic field strength. A Gauss meter is an instrument which measures the strength of magnetic fields. Inside a Gauss meter there is a coil of thin wire, typically with hundreds of turns. As a magnetic field radiates through the coil, it induces a current, which is amplified by the circuitry inside the Gauss meter.

Gauss meters may vary in the strength of the magnetic field they are capable of measuring. A meter used for measuring EMFs from power lines, transformers, substations and appliances around the home, for example, should be able to measure as low as .1 mg.

Gauss meters vary widely in price and accuracy. Meters have either a single axis coil or a triple axis coil. Single axis meters are much simpler than triple axis meters to manufacture and thus, are less expensive. To use a single axis meter you must point the meter’s one sensor in three directions — -the x, y and z axis. Then, you combine the three readings in a mathematical equation to calculate the combined field strength. Obviously, its far easier and more accurate to use a 3-axis meter. Triple axis Gauss meters are quite accurate, but they are also more expensive.
Another thing to watch out for when purchasing or renting a Gauss meter is whether or not it is frequency weighted. Most meters will read the same EMF strength no mater what the frequency.

As the human body appears to be sensitive to both the field strength AND the frequency, Gauss meters used for biological purposes should be “frequency weighted”. This means that if the field is different than 60 Hz the meter will consider the frequency and use it in calculating and displaying the EMF’s strength. This feature is why frequency weighted meters will show a higher EMF reading than those meters typically used by electricians and engineers.

Power Lines
An enormous amount of electricity is created at power generating stations and sent across the country through wires that carry high voltages. All power lines radiate electromagnetic fields. The question is: how much are the power lines near YOUR home radiating? The amount of EMFs coming from a power line depends on its particular configuration. Power companies know which power line configurations are best for reducing EMFs but most don’t feel the evidence supports costly changes in the way they deliver electricity.

Substations
A substation is an assemblage of circuit breakers, disconnecting switches and transformers designed to substations have been blamed for causing cancer clusters among nearby residents. Paul Brodeur wrote about several such cancer clusters in the July 9, 1990 issue of the New Yorker Magazine.

Transformers
A key component of a utility’s electrical distribution network depends upon numerous, small transformers mounted on power poles. A transformer looks like a small metal trash can, usually cylindrical.

Even when the electrical service is underground, you will often see a metal box (usually square} located on the ground near the street. Many people don’t realize that when they see a transformer, the power line feeding the transformer is 4000 to 13,800 volts. The transformer then reduces the voltage to the 120/240 volts needed by nearby homes. Since these transformers can be seen in almost every neighborhood, they are a source of concern. EMFs near a transformer can be quite high, but due to its small structure, the field strength diminishes rapidly with distance, as it does from any point source. For this reason, having a transformer located near your home is usually not a major source of concern, although just to make sure, everyone should measure the field strength around it.

Home Wiring
If your home has high EMF readings, it is important to determine the sources of the EMF so that remedial action can be taken, if possible. Many times a particular room will have a higher EMF reading. Check to see if the electricity is coming into the house on the wall outside that room. When this is the case, it is usually a good idea to block off that room and only use it for storage purposes.

Sometimes, the source of a high magnetic field is incorrect wiring. If you suspect that your home is wired improperly, obtain the services of a licensed electrician. Warning: Do not touch electric wires, even if you think the current is turned off. If you need to disconnect electrical circuits to determine the source of magnetic fields, you should call a licensed electrician.

Computers

Computers are a complicated subject. Know this: EMFs radiate from all sides of the computer. Thus, you must not only be concerned with sitting in front of the monitor but also if you are sitting near a computer or if a computer is operating in a nearby room.

The Swedish safety standard, effective 711/90, specifies a maximum of 0.25 mG at 50 cm from the display. Many US manufactured computers have EMFs of 5 – 100 mG at this distance. And know this too: the screens placed over monitors do NOT block EMFs. Not even a lead screen will block ELF and VLF magnetic fields. Space does not permit a more thorough discussion of computers. If you use a computer, it is important that you measure your EMF exposure with a Gauss meter and review the literature concerning the health impacts of computer use.
Electric Blankets and Waterbeds

Electric blankets create a magnetic field that penetrates about 6-7 inches into the body. Thus it is not surprising that an epidemiological study has linked electric blankets with miscarriages and childhood leukemia. This pioneering work was performed by Dr. Nancy Wertheimer and Ed Leeper, who originally discovered that magnetic fields were linked to childhood leukemia. Similar health effects have been noted with users of many electric blankets and waterbed heaters will emit EMFs even when turned off.

The devices must be unplugged to delete the EMF exposure Additionally, there is the issue regarding the vibrations that are generated by sleeping on standing water. There is less hard data in this area but some experts are concerned about the consequences.

Electric Clocks
Electric clocks have a very high magnetic field, as much as 5 to 10 mG up to three feet away. If you are using a bedside clock, you are probably sleeping in an EMF equivalent to that of a powerline Studies have linked high rates of brain tumors with chronic exposure to magnetic fields, so it is wise to place all clocks and other electrical devices (such as telephones and answering devices) at least 6 feet from your bed.

Fluorescent Lights
Fluorescent lights produce much more EMFs than incandescent bulbs. A typical fluorescent lamp of a office
ceiling have readings of 160 to 200 mg 1 inch away.

Microwave Ovens and Radar
Microwave ovens and radar from military installations and airports emit two types of radiation — microwave and ELF. Microwaves are measured in milliwatt per centimeter squared (mW/cm2) As of 1/1/93, the U.S. safety limit for microwave exposure is 1 mW/cm2, down from a previous 10 mW/cm2. The Russian safety limit is .01 mW/cm2. All microwave ovens leak and exceed the Russian safety limit. In addition, recent Russian studies have shown that normal microwave cooking coverts food protein molecules into carcinogenic substances.

When measuring microwaves from military and airport radar sources, 100% accurate readings can only be found with extremely expensive digital peak-hold meters. Why? Because analog devices begin to drop their reading immediately after the radar sweep passes. Thus, while an analog meter can show whether or not you are being exposed to radar EMFs, analog meters can’t show your true exposure. Although thousands of dollars to purchase, digital-hold meters capable of accurately detecting radar EMFs can be rented for several hundred to over a thousand dollars per month.

Can electromagnetic fields (EMF) from power lines, home wiring, airport and military radar, substations, transformers, computers and appliances cause brain tumors, leukemia, birth defects, miscarriages, chronic fatigue, headaches, cataracts, heart problems, stress. nausea, chest pain, forgetfulness, cancer and other health problems?

Dr. David Carpenter, Dean at the School of Public Health, State University of New York believes it is likely that up to 30% of all childhood cancers come from exposure to EMFs. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) warns “There is reason for concern” and advises prudent avoidance”.

Martin Halper, the EPA’s Director of Analysis and Support says “I have never seen a set of epidemiological studies that remotely approached the weight of evidence that we’re seeing with EMFs. Clearly there is something here.”
Concern over EMFs exploded after Paul Brodeur wrote a series of articles in the New Yorker Magazine in June 1989. Because of Paul Brodeur’s reputation. his articles had a catalytic effect on scientists, reporters and concerned people throughout the world.

In November 1989, the Department of Energy reported that “It has now become generally accepted that there are, indeed, biological effects due to field exposure.”

The EMF issue gained more publicity in 1990 when alarming reports appeared in Time, the Wall Street Journal, Business Week and popular computer publications. ABC’s Ted Koppel and CBS’s Dan Rather both aired special segments on EMFs.
In addition to the long-term health concerns, buying a house with high fields will be an economic disaster. In a few years, when power line radiation is as well known as asbestos and radon, a house with high fields will be practically impossible to sell. Already there are hundreds of lawsuits regarding EMFs and property devaluation.

EPA Says the Threat Is Real
By 1990, over one hundred studies had been conducted worldwide. Of these, at least two dozen epidemiological studies on humans indicated a link between EMFs and serious health problems. In response to public pressure, the Environmental Protection Agency IEPA) began reviewing and evaluating the available literature.

In a draft report issued in March 1990, the EPA recommended that EMFs be classified as a Class B carcinogen — -a “probable human carcinogen and joined the ranks of formaldehyde, DDT, dioxins and PCBs.

After the EPA draft report was released, utility, military and computer lobbyists came down hard on the EPA. The EPA’s final revision did NOT classify EMFs as a Class B carcinogen Rather, the following explanation was added:” At this time such a characterization regarding the link between cancer and exposure to EMFs is not appropriate because the basic nature of the interaction between EMFs and biological processes leading to cancer is not understood.”
Curiously, this rather unusual logic appears on the same page as the following: “In conclusion, several studies showing leukemia, Iymphoma and cancer of the nervous system in children exposed to supported by similar findings in adults in several/ occupational studies also involving electrical power frequency exposures, show a consistent pattern of response that suggest a causal link. ”

When questioned about the contradictory nature of these statements, the EPA responded that it was “not appropriate” to use the probable carcinogen label until it could demonstrate how EMFs caused cancer and exactly how much EMF is harmful.

This explanation does not satisfy many critics who claim that the EPAs upper management was influenced by political and economic considerations exerted by utility, computer and military lobbyists.

When we think about EMF in the home, we don’t usually think in terms of house wiring, but in houses where the background EMF radiation is higher than usual, poorly executed house wiring is often the cause.

Of course, most people in the developed world have electricity in their houses, and that means wires and currents. If wiring is properly done, background levels of low frequency EMF should be quite low (less than 0.3mG), but there will usually be local hotspots substantially above this level.

What causes Home EMF Hotspots?
Home EMF hotspots arise close to items such as electricity meters (especially the older rotating disc kind) main distribution panels, fuse boxes, battery-based back-up power supplies and major wiring ducts. These hotspots generally extend for about 1.2 to 1.5 metres (4-5′) from their source before their EMF radiation fades to background levels.

Other hotspots from installed electrical equipment such as florescent lights, light switches (particularly dimmer switches), heating panels, intercom base stations and air conditioning units usually have an even shorter range. It helps to be aware of home EMF hotspots, so one can avoid spending large amounts of time snuggled up close to a hotspot source. Usually, moving your favourite chair or sliding a bed around a bit, is enough to solve the problem.

Badly-wired houses create high home-EMF levels

So far we have been discussing proper house wiring. What does this mean and what happens when it isn’t done correctly?

To keep home EMF values low, the live and neutral wire partners should be close to each other for the entire run of the wire. Ideally they would be touching each other (or their insulated sheaths should touch!)

Any gap between live and neutral will cause a magnetic field to be created in and around the gap, whenever alternating current flows through the wire. An EMF-creating defect can be caused in a simple fashion whenever the live and neutral wires to a light or socket (for example) follow different routes. It can also occur in more complex wiring situations, for example an incorrectly wired two-way lighting circuit (a light controlled by two switches).

Last month, a study in the American Journal of Epidemiology, suggests that cell phone use contributes to at least some cancers. The study found focused on cancer of the salivary gland, looking at 500 Israeli citizens who had developed the disease and 1,300 healthy subjects.

Researchers concluded that those who had held a mobile handset against one side of their head for several hours a day were 50 percent more likely to have a tumor in the salivary gland. Since cell phones were introduced in the 1980s, there has been speculation of a heightened risk of cancer, caused by holding an electronic device against the head. There have been a number of studies, but no conclusive evidence one way or the other. This latest study is different because it has focused on long-term users. Also, researchers say, previous studies have looked for tumor formation exclusively in the brain, not other parts of the body. Salivary gland Cancer of the salivary gland, they point out, is very rare, and its location so close to where a handset is held makes the tumor-cell phone connection all the more intriguing.

The mobile communications industry has repeatedly questioned studies suggesting a cancer link. It argues cell phones have been shown to be safe, and should be considered so until they are conclusively shown to be unsafe.
Skeptics worry that radio-frequency radiation emitted from the devices might be harmful to human tissue, and might contribute to the formation of tumors. Dr. Siegal Sadetzki, who headed up the research team, notes that cancer risks appeared to be higher among rural cell phone users, because their mobile phones put off increased radiation to compensate for weaker signals. But Sadetzki concedes her study is inconclusive and should be followed up with ongoing research. Even so, she says “precautions should be taken” in order to reduce risk, especially for children and young adults who use mobile phones.

WiFi too
Add to that worries about wireless computer networks. Last year, the British scientist who raised one of the early warnings about potential health hazards from cell phones has a new worry — wireless Internet, or WiFi.
Sir William Stewart, chairman of Britain’s Health Protection Agency, is lobbying British authorities for an investigation into WiFi’s possible health risks, according to Britain’s The Independent.

Stewart is concerned because wireless Internet may become more prevalent than mobile telephones.
A few individuals are known to suffer from a heightened sensitivity to electromagnetic radiation, but in recent years more and more physicians have expressed concern that repeated and prolonged exposure might be harmful to the wider population.

A study conducted in Finland found that people who have used cell phones for ten years or more are 40 per cent more likely to get a brain tumor on the same side of the head as they hold their handset. Research done in Sweden puts the risk at almost four times greater. Stewart is reportedly concerned because of the similarity of the radiation emitted by cell phones and WiFi systems. But whereas cell phone radiation exposes only the person using the handset, WiFi radiation could affect everyone in the general vicinity.

Much of the concern is directed at children, who are seen as more vulnerable than adults to the effects of radiation, and because they will likely be exposed to increasing levels of radiation throughout their lives.
The Austrian Medical Association is pressing the government to ban the deployment of WiFi in schools.
Concerns about WiFi health effects have also been raised in the U.S.

In 2003, parents sued an Illinois school that installed a WiFi system, claiming the radiation was causing headaches and memory problems. Last year, Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario refused to install a campus WiFi system, citing possible health concerns.

There are over 4 billion cell phone users throughout the world today – that’s about 4 people out of every 6 living on this planet and owning a cell phone, subscribed to a cellular phone plan, or living with someone who owns a mobile phone. The ubiquity of wireless phones brings to the fore certain issues related to this device, like cell phone dangers to human health.
All mobile phones, when turned on, emit electromagnetic radiation in the microwave radio frequency range. It is this cell phone radiation, as it is absorbed by human tissue (most commonly in the head, as you place the phone next to your ear when you talk) that has come under intense scrutiny this past decade. Experiment Without Controls

On the other hand, studies with opposing results and observations have also been published. CTIA, the wireless industry’s lobbying association pointed out to studies or statements from the World Health Organization (WHO), the American Cancer Society, and the FDA downplaying potential cell phone dangers, “all have concurred that wireless devices are not a public health risk.”

But, as Professor Devra Davis, at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute explains, “the latency between exposure and brain cancer could be 20 or 30 years” and by using cellular devices without any clear understanding of cell phone dangers, “we are basically treating ourselves like lab rats in an experiment without any controls”
The verdict is still out, obviously, but are you willing to take the risk?

Protect Yourself

Today, at the Consumer Electronics Show 2010 in Las Vegas, a company called Pong Research has announced the availability of a product called Pong™ BlackBerry Curve™ Case which claims to reduce users’ exposure to mobile phone radiation by 60%. Until this product is introduced by other manufacturers to cover other brands and will be marketed widely, however, we all just have to take certain precautionary measures to protect ourselves from suspected cell phone dangers: Keep your cell phone away from your body. The greatest exposure to cellular phone radiation is when it is 6 inches or less from any body part. Text more, talk less. Take only the most important calls or make the least amount of calls on your phone and transmit messages through SMS.

Use headset or speakerphone function. wireless phone radiation is emitted directly from a unit’s built-in antenna. Using a headset ensures that the actual cell phone is located away from your head, which can easily absorb EMF radiation.
Use your land line. It’s definitely safer to talk on the land line than on a mobile phone, because this lessens your exposure to radiation. Turn off your cell phone while charging. Not only will you charge your phone faster, it will also cut down on radiation emission from your cell to which everyone in your house or office is exposed to.

Purchase or use phones that have been certified or tested to emit the least amount of radiation. The Environmental Working Group has prepared an exhaustive list covering over 1,000 phones currently in the market, and they have come up with a list of the 10 best phones (with least radiation output) to use. Keep cellular phones away from children. Children’s skulls are thinner and their brains are less dense than adult brains, radio frequency signals can penetrate deeper into a child’s brain than in an adult’s.

There’s a greater concern for children because the life-time exposure will be much higher,” says Jane Houlihan of the Environmental Working Group. In the United States, as many as seven in ten children between the ages of 12 and 17 own a mobile phone, and half use them daily, according to the New York Times. At the moment, there is no conclusive, peer-reviewed evidence that points to cell phone dangers from radiation exposure. The science is evolving on this subject, but if we must err, it should be on the side of caution. When it comes to our health and those of our children, nothing should be left to chance, let’s always protect ourselves.

INFANT DANGER

In the journal Pediatrics (vol. 89, no. 4, April 1992), there appeared an article titled, “Effects of Microwave Radiation on Anti-infective Factors in Human Milk”. Richard Quan, M.D. from Dallas, Texas, was the lead name of the study team. John A. Kerner, M.D., from Stanford University, was also on the research team, and he was quoted in a summary article on the research that appeared in the 25 April 1992 issue of Science News.

To get the full flavour of what may lie ahead for microwaving, here is that summary article: “Women who work outside the home can express and store breast milk for feedings when they are away. But parents and caregivers should be careful how they warm this milk. A new study shows that microwaving human milk-even at a low setting-can destroy some of its important disease-fighting capabilities. “Breast milk can be refrigerated safely for a few days or frozen for up to a month; however, studies have shown that heating the milk well above body temperature-37&degree;C-can break down not only its antibodies to infectious agents, but also its lysozymes or bacteria-digesting enzymes.

So, when paediatrician John A. Kerner, Jr, witnessed neonatal nurses routinely thawing or reheating breast milk with the microwave oven in their lounge, he became concerned. “In the April 1992 issue of Pediatrics (Part I), he and his Stanford University co-workers reported finding that unheated breast milk that was microwaved lost lysozyme activity, antibodies and fostered the growth of more potentially pathogenic bacteria.

Milk heated at a high setting (72 degree;C to 98 degree;C) lost 96 per cent of its immunoglobulin-A antibodies, agents that fend off invading microbes. “What really surprised him, Kerner said, was finding some loss of anti-infective properties in the milk microwaved at a low setting-and to a mean of just 33.5degree;C. Adverse changes at such low temperatures suggest ‘microwaving itself may in fact cause some injury to the milk above and beyond the heating’. “But Randall M. Goldblum of the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston disagrees, saying: ‘I don’t see any compelling evidence that the microwaves did any harm.

It was the heating.’ Lysozyme and antibody degradation in the coolest samples may simply reflect the development of small hot spots-potentially 60&degree;C or above-during microwaving, noted Madeleine Sigman-Grant of Pennsylvania State University, University Park. And that’s to be expected, she said, because microwave heating is inherently uneven-and quite unpredictable when volumes less than four millilitres are involved, as was the case in the Kerner’s study.
“Goldblum considers use of a microwave to thaw milk an especially bad idea, since it is likely to boil some of the milk before all has even liquefied. Stanford University Medical Center no longer microwaves breast milk, Kerner notes. And that’s appropriate, Sigman-Grant believes, because of the small volumes of milk that hospitals typically serve newborns-especially premature infants.”

CHASING A STORY
Journalist Tom Valentine, after chasing this story, found it interesting that ‘scientists’ have so many ‘beliefs’ to express rather than prove fact. Yet facts eventually snuff out credential-based conjecture. Researcher Quan, in a phone interview, said that he believed the results of research so far warranted further detailed study of the effects of microwave cooking on nutrients.

The summary sentence in an abstract of the research paper is very clear: “Microwaving appears to be contra-indicated at high temperatures, and questions regarding its safety exist even at low temperatures.” The final statement of the study conclusion reads:”This preliminary study suggests that microwaving human milk could be detrimental. Further studies are needed to determine whether and how microwaving could safely be done.”

Unfortunately, further studies are not scheduled at this time. If there are so many indications that the effects of microwaves on foods can degrade the foods far above the known breakdowns of standard cooking, is it not reasonable to conduct exhaustive studies on living, breathing human beings to determine if it’s possible that eating microwaved foods continuously, as many people do, can be significantly detrimental to individual health? If you wanted to introduce a herbal supplement into the American mainstream and make any health claims for it, you would be subjected to exhaustive documentation and costly research.

Yet the microwave-oven industry had only to prove that the dangerous microwaves could, indeed, be contained within the oven and not escape into the surrounding area where the radiation could do damage to people. The industry must admit that some microwaves escape even in the best-made ovens. So far, not one thought has been given by the industry to the possibility that the nutrients could be so altered as to be deleterious to health.

Well, this makes sense in a land that encourages farmers to poison crops and soils with massive amounts of synthesised chemicals, and encourages food processors to use additives that enhance shelf-life of foods regardless of the potential for degrading the health of the consumer. How many hundreds of pounds of microwaved food per capita is consumed in America each year? Are we going to continue to take it from established authority, without question, on the premise that they know best?
