Short exposure to Mobile phone radiation – two hours – has been reported in 2003 to destroy cells in parts of the brain important for memory, movement and learning, and could possibly conceivably premature onset of illnesses such as Alzheimers – although we have no evidence of a similar effect in humans. Lund University Hospital Professor Leif Salford says mobile radiation allows harmful proteins and toxins through the brain barrier in rats. He also has found significant degree of damage to brain neurons in adolescent rats.

He said: “If this effect was to transfer to young mobile users, the effects could be terrifying. We can see reduced brain reserve capacity, meaning those who might normally have got Alzheimer’s or dementia in old age could get it much earlier.” He used rats aged 12-26 weeks because their brain cells were still developing in a similar way to teenagers and younger children. They were exposed for just 120 minutes to radiation equivalent to typical intensive mobile phone use. Sections of rat brains were examined 50 days after exposure. Animals exposed to medium and high level radiation had many dead neurons in their brains – totally different from rats which were not exposed to radiation. (published Feb 2003).

The trouble is that similar studies cannot be carried out in humans because mobile phone radiation exposure would have to be followed by brain biopsy which can cause epilepsy later, permanent brain damage, stroke or even death. We can only get the answer in humans by doing studies on brain tissue of teenagers killed in accidents, and comparing brain tissue of heavy, medium, light and non-users of mobile phones. In addition, we have yet to see other centres replicate his work.

EMFS or Electromagnetic Fields have been present with man since we first began to populate the earth. What is “new” about electromagnetic radiation is that it is no longer confined to the earth’s natural grid within which humans evolved. Every person, plant and animal is living under a blanket of man-made electromagnetic smog. The term “electromagnetic smog” or “electro pollution” is often used.

The Electromagnetic Spectrum includes visible and invisible light. It includes microwaves, ultraviolet and X-rays. When we talk about EMFs we generally are speaking about the invisible spectrum of non-ionizing (non tissue-heating) radiation. This includes radiation from radio frequencies, television and satellite transmission. The electromagnetic field (EMF) spectrum can be expressed in terms of energy, wavelength, or frequency.

Bio-Effects of EMF’s (Electromagnetic Fields)

Electromagnetic Field Radiation is all around us and in increasing types and numbers of frequencies. Think about what life was like in terms of the amount of frequencies in the 1960s compared to now. In today’s environment, the EMF spectrum is crowded. Radio stations using frequencies so close to each other that it is easy to get a ‘bleed through’ between stations if the tuner isn’t exact. Radio frequencies are but one of the many electromagnetic fields that are radiating through us.

Dr. Robert O. Becker studied the bioeffects of EMFs, discovering that “many illnesses have been linked to exposure to electromagnetic fields: weakened endocrine and immune systems which, in turn, lead to more allergies, asthma, cancer, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, headaches, fibromyalgia, sleep disorders, ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), autism, Alzheimers, Parkinsons, Environmental Illness, and a speeded-up aging process.” He also found that exposure man made EMFs produce stress, a decline in immune-system competency, and changes in the genetic apparatus.

It is important to put out a warning about DECT phones, as they could be up to 100 times worse than an ordinary mobile, particularly if used in built up areas. The reason for this is the frequency of the pulse. DECT pulses at 100Hz whilst a GSM mobile pulses at 217Hz. Remember, the lower the pulsing frequency, the stronger the biological effect. It’s the pulsing within the ELF (extremely low frequency) range we have to be concerned about. That’s why TETRA is so dangerous. It pulses at 17.6Hz, right within the human beta brainwave rhythm range.

Dr von Klitzing, who was one of the Medical Physicists signing the Freiburger Appeal, reported his research regarding DECT phones. His research on blood samples taken from children in the vicinity of DECT phones showed that the red blood corpuscles did not ‘ripen out properly’ (a direct translation of his words). The physical signs were: listlessness and/or aggression, pallor, sleeplessness etc. This could be reversed with the removal of the phone.
Choice

In your own home you have a choice, and it is yours. If you have reservations as a result of reading up on DECT, at least revert to an older style analogue cordless phone – or put up with wires!

Neighbours’ phones are another matter. If you know where such a phone base is, you may decide to try foil on the wall in a large patch, to screen the DECT out. If it works, you might prefer to install it more permanently under wallpaper. But do note that microwaves tend to run around such barriers like water around a stone in a stream, so a small phone-sized patch will not work. (Findings from using an Acousticom detector.)

If you find your foil disrupts the neighbouring phone, you don’t want to get into a dispute, with one of you moving the phone and the other moving the screen. Try and explain the problem in an open way, using the research listed here.

DECT in the office? Again an emotive subject. All your employer will do is refer to the Health and Safety Executive, who refer to the NRPB, who cite the ICNIRP (if it doesn’t heat you it can’t harm you) guidelines. These are wholly inappropriate, so employees have (a) no guidance and (b) no way to assess exposure in the office. The manufacturers give no advice on density of DECT per square metre. If you are sensitive to DECT, try to explain what you experience and ask for a wired phone. But I know it may not be easy.

The base stations of some home-use cordless phones emit twice as much radiation as cell phone masts. And, unlike cell phones, cordless phone base stations emit radiation even when they are not in use.
This means that some cordless phones could be a brain tumor risk.

The British Health Protection Agency has also admitted that there is an increased association between acoustic neuromas — a type of ear tumor that can cause deafness — and electromagnetic fields of the type emitted by these telephones. A study has shown that the risk of cordless phone users developing acoustic neuromas doubles over the course of a decade.

The environmental group Powerwatch has recommended that cordless phone users switch to a different type of phone.

Apple’s iPhone 3GS now has a SAR of 0.79 W/kg when held close to the ear compared to the 0.974 W/kg SAR of the original iPhone, and 1.39 W/kg SAR for the iPhone 3G – not particularly a good number for the 3G since the maximum allowed is 1.6. Apple, no doubt, has made remarkable improvement in bringing down the iPhone 3GS radiation emissions, making it far more safer for its consumers but it is still not good enough to be among the top 10 cell phone’s ranked by radiation. Another question which could arise here is that why is the SAR level of the iPhone 3G is significantly higher than that of the 3GS?

The simple answer would be that Apple has tightened up tolerance limits and the new design-level architecture improvements allows less radiation leakage. There seems to be a considerable difference in the hardware of the 3GS from the 3G. A redesigned improvised antenna, upgraded internal components and better shielding of these internal components must have together contributed to reduce the SAR of iPhone 3GS. No matter how best and how safe your cell phone is, it is still prudent to keep oneself healthy by texting more and talking less. That’s one of the tips given from Environmental Working Group for cell phone consumers.

Taking advantage of high quality sound of iPhone’s loud speaker, is yet another way to reduce on radiation absorption. It’s better to be more on speaker phone, so as to keep phone it at arm’s length from your skull. In today’s world, from natural as well as man-made energy sources, we are constantly living in flood of radiations. Cutting down on your own cell phone usage, may be the only option with us to reduce radiations absorb dose to our heads at least.
