Accurate RF dosimetry measurements in simulated humans are difficult to perform, yet they are essential in establishing the compliance of the phone with the relevant compliance standards. The new harmonized SAR test method adopted by CENELEC and IEEE will ensure that the measurement regimes used to test compliance with either the ICNIRP or IEEE exposure standards are largely the same. The following provides only an outline of the complicated process used in measuring the SAR values.
Essentially the SAR measurement system comprises a phantom human head, specially developed liquids, a robot fitted with a measurement probe, and a mobile phone powered up to its maximum certified power level.

The Phantom

In order to achieve a measure of SAR that will include all types of people, a phantom has been produced that is based upon the dimensions of a large adult male head (it has been shown that a larger head is exposed to a higher SAR) as measured on US Army personnel. This phantom has been constructed with compressed thin ears to simulate users with small ears. In addition – right and left model heads are used to ensure that the different exposure areas caused by the asymmetric location of the antenna in many phones are being measured. The Liquid

The phantom is filled with a liquid that correlates with the dielectric properties of human head tissue. The dielectric properties of ‘head tissue’ have been calculated taking into account the properties of human brain tissue and the matching effects of the outer tissue layers of the head (e.g., skin and skull) to provide a conservative overestimate of the values. Different ‘recipes’ are used for tests on different frequencies.

Study suggests serotonin plays a role in SIDS

Mice who overproduced the brain chemical showed symptoms similar to those of the infant syndrome before they died. Mice genetically engineered to overproduce the brain chemical serotonin died at an early age after developing symptoms similar to those of sudden infant death syndrome, suggesting improper regulation of serotonin may cause SIDS in humans.
The majority of the mice died after being unable to regulate their heart rate and body temperature, scientists reported Friday in the journal Science.
Dr. Cornelius Gross, a study author and head of the project at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Monterotondo, Italy, said the work might prompt clinical research “to devise diagnostic tests to try to identify those kids most likely to … die of SIDS.”
SIDS is a condition in which seemingly healthy babies between 1 month and 1 year old die without warning or explanation. It kills approximately 2,700 infants in the U.S. each year.
The mice were part of a study on serotonin’s role in aggression and anxiety, but after they began dying, a scientist suggested the deaths might be related to SIDS.
“This was a chance discovery,” Gross said.
Serotonin, in addition to affecting mood, regulates bodily functions such as temperature, respiration and heart rate.
The findings support autopsy-based results reported from 2006 in which researchers from Children’s Hospital Boston, led by Dr. Hannah Kinney, found that infants who died of SIDS had abnormal serotonin-producing cells in their brain stems.

Senator’s Wife Did Not Receive Favors, Campaign Says
By James V. Grimaldi
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, October 16, 2008; A06
Early in 2007, just as her husband launched his presidential bid, Cindy McCain sought to resolve an old problem — the lack of cellphone coverage on her remote 15-acre ranch near Sedona, Ariz., nestled deep in a tree-lined canyon called Hidden Valley.
Over the past year, she offered land for a permanent cell tower, and Verizon Wireless embarked on an expensive public process to meet her needs, hiring contractors and seeking county land-use permits.
Verizon ultimately abandoned its effort to install a permanent tower in August. Company spokesman Jeffrey Nelson said the project would be “an inappropriate way” to build its network. “It doesn’t make business sense for us to do that,” he added.
Instead, Verizon delivered a portable tower known as a “cell site on wheels” — free of charge — to the McCain property in June, after the Secret Service began inquiring about improving coverage in the area. Such devices are used for providing temporary capacity where coverage is lacking or has been knocked out, in circumstances ranging from the Super Bowl to hurricanes.
In July, AT&T followed suit, wheeling in a portable tower for free to match Verizon’s offer. “This is an unusual situation,” AT&T spokeswoman Claudia B. Jones said. “You can’t have a presidential nominee in an area where there is not cell coverage.”

Cell Phone Radiation Effects, Brain Tumors and Chidren

http://www.emfnews.org/qlinks.html
http://www.emfnews.org/products.html
With 3 billion cell phone users worldwide and more than 260 million in the United States alone—among them 46% of U.S. children aged 8–12, according to Nielsen Mobile figures released 10 September 2008—human exposure to low-energy radiation in the 800- to 2,000-megahertz range is at an all-time high. The most recent attempt to systematically review the epidemiologic evidence for increased risk of brain tumors related to cell phone use indicates that repercussions from this global experiment are coming to light. In a meta-analysis published in the May 2008 issue of the International Journal of Oncology, Swedish researchers found significant associations between long-term cell phone use and brain tumor risk. In July 2008 market research firm MultiMedia Intelligence reported that more than 16 million U.S. teens use cell phones.

“We found that cell phone use is linked to gliomas [malignant brain tumors] and acoustic neuromas [benign tumors of the brain’s auditory nerve] and are showing up after only ten years,” says lead author Lennart Hardell, an oncologist and cancer epidemiologist at University Hospital in Örebro, Sweden. Specifically, for studies that included at least 10 years of exposure, there was a doubling in the risk of gliomas for ipsilateral (same-side) but not contralateral (opposite-side) exposures to the head (as reflected by which hand the subject typically used to hold his/her cell phone). A 2.4-fold increase in risk was seen for acoustic neuromas due to ipsilateral exposures, whereas no increased risk occurred for meningiomas (tumors that occur in the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord). http://www.emfnews.org/chipcategory.html

WiFi System at Spain’s University of Baiona Cause of Students’ “Discomfort”

http://www.emfnews.org/products.html
Hi All

This story is from Spain but it has been forwarded to me from France. The translation to English is not very clear but I think we are able to understand the general meaning.

It appears that students at the University of Baiona have been complaining of headaches, breathing problems and dizziness (symptoms of microwave exposure illness). In response the University is conducting air testing. When the University WiFi system failed, persons on the campus soon noticed an improvement in their health.

It will be interesting to see whether the University management will recognize the dangers of microwave radiation and take positive action, or whether they will continue to deny that electro magnetic radiation is harmful and fail to protect students and staff.

Calif. Regulators Ban Cell Use By Train Operators

LOS ANGELES – California regulators reacting to the deadly wreck of a
commuter train issued an emergency order Thursday banning train
operators from using cell phones on duty.

The Public Utilities Commission’s unanimous decision to pass the
temporary order came a day after investigators confirmed that the engineer of
the Metrolink commuter train was text-messaging while on duty on the
day the train ran a red light and collided head-on with a Union Pacific
freight train. Last week’s wreck in Los Angeles killed 25 people,
including the engineer, and injured more than 130.
Some railroads — including Metrolink — prohibit operators from using
cell phones on the job, but the commission’s president, Michael R.
Peevey, has said the rules are widely ignored. There is no federal regulation
of cell-phone use by railroad workers and until Thursday there had
been no California rules.
Richard Clark, the commission’s director of consumer protection and
safety, said the use of cell phones was “implicated” in two earlier
accidents this year involving other rail systems, but he declined to comment
on its specific role in either case until the investigations are
completed.
Under the new order the board approved in San Francisco, violators
could be fined up to $20,000 per violation or have their operations shut
down.
“Today’s action will protect the public,” Peevey said. “What we’re
doing today is just a modest first step in a much larger effort to improve
railroad safety.”
The National Transportation Safety Board requested the cell phone
records of engineer Robert Sanchez after two teenage train fans said they
exchanged text messages with him shortly before the crash Friday in the
San Fernando Valley neighborhood of Chatsworth.

Mobile phone radiation fries sperm – study

http://www.emfnews.org/chipcategory.html
http://www.emfnews.org/cell-phone-radiation-book.html

MEN who talk for hours on their mobile phones could be jeopardising their chance of fathering a child, Australian research suggests.
An experiment on semen revealed evidence of DNA damage after 16 hours of exposure to radiation similar to the output of a mobile phone.
The preliminary study, presented at a fertility conference in Brisbane today, is the first of its kind, and supports US research showing heavy mobile phone users have up to 40 per cent lower sperm counts than lighter users.
Researchers at the University of Newcastle built a device to irradiate sperm at the same radio frequency as mobile telephone calls.
Professor John Aitken, director of the university’s Centre of Excellence in Biotechnology and Development, said they were able to accurately identify high levels of DNA fragmentation in the sperm.
“After 16 hours exposure, there was clear evidence of DNA damage,” Prof Aitken said.
“This is a very early finding from our analysis, but it does raise concerns.”
DNA damage in spermatozoa has been associated with decreased fertility, increased risk of miscarriage and various kinds of disease in offspring, including childhood cancer, and a number of neurological disorders such as autism, bipolar disorder and spontaneous schizophrenia.
In the study, damage was caused by oxidative stress – when the generation of free radicals exceeds the body’s own anti-oxidant defense mechanisms.
