A group of parents in York
region are fighting mad over
wireless internet in schools
that they say is hazardous to their children’s health.
“You think your kids are safe, it’s supposed to be a safe
environment. Wi-Fi is not safe,” said parent Sharon.
Every school in the region has wireless internet access, and
many more across the province are quickly adopting the idea.
“We feel that mandatory exposure to a possible carcinogen is
unethical and wrong,” said parent Lynette.
Two mothers
CityNews spoke to say they have even begun
home-schooling their children as a result of the
controversy.
The school board says it is relying on health officials to
rule on the safety of Wi-Fi.
“I in fact released an opinion on this last year, and the
weight of the evidence does not support health effects
associated with exposure to radio frequency energy, which is
either
Wi-Fi or cell phones,” said Dr. Arlene King, Chief
Medical Officer of Health, Ontario.
Last year, a group of teachers in the Niagara region put
forward a motion to the Elementary Teachers' Federation of
Ontario to remove Wi-Fi from classrooms over health
concerns.
