Pets Left In Fukushima Nuclear Zone Struggle To Survive

While the 20km around Japan's stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant is now a virtual ghost town after being evacuated of people due to radiation, many pets have not been so lucky.

The massive 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan last March crippled the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, triggering the world's worst nuclear crisis since the Chernobyl disaster.

In the haste of evacuating thousands from around the plant, hundreds of dogs and cats were left behind by people. Even now, buildings still lay where they fell in the earthquake and livestock roams the streets.

Almost one year on from the disaster, Yasunori Hoso and his organisation United Kennel Club (UKC) Japan, have rescued over 250 dogs and 100 cats from the zone and are still looking after those living wild.

Once the animals are captured in the zone, they are taken back to UKC Japan's main shelter south of Tokyo until their families are found.
However, in many cases, even once an animal's family is found they are unable to take back their pet as many live in temporary housing that doesn't accept animals.

It takes nearly 100,000 yen (NZ$1,500) per day to feed the menagerie of pets housed at the shelter, but Hoso said that he would never put a time limit on how long he would keep the pets.

"Being able to return them to their owner, and seeing the family happy and seeing the dog happy, that's when I felt that I was glad that I did all this," Hoso said.

He said the eventual goal of UKC Japan is to build a shelter large enough to accept not only animals from Fukushima, but around the country.

While the government announced that the Fukushima plant was in a state of cold shutdown last December, the Environment Ministry says about 2,400 square km of land around the plant may need to be decontaminated.
