Health officials are calling for new warnings to be issued
over mobile phones, despite all the research previously
carried out stating the risk they pose is inconclusive.
A group of doctors are calling on the UK government to
target children and pregnant women in an effort to warn that
they could be at risk by over using a mobile phone device.
The doctors cite more than 200 studies, which suggest that
these particular groups are at more risk than the general
public, particularly in developing brain tumours.
They suggest that while the research is inconclusive, it
could be decades before the risk is provable. By then it
will be too late for those who have developed tumours and
other illnesses as a result of years of mobile phone use.
The doctors believe the maxim – better safe than sorry – is
apt where mobile phones are concerned.
Critics have, as expected, jumped on this renewed call. They
suggest the current research is very mixed, contradictory
and inconclusive, so issuing yet another warning with out
hard evidence is just scaremongering.
The doctors group, by contrast, says that just because the
evidence is patchy is not a reason for government inaction.
Speaking with the Daily Telegraph, Kevin O’Neill, a
Consultant Neurosurgeon at Charing Cross Hospital in London,
said “Although further research is needed, it makes sense to
err on the side of caution in the mean time.”
He added: “We know from our experience with smoking and
asbestos that waiting for certainty of harm is a dangerous
