A quarter of a million people across B.C. have told Hydro
they do not want smart meters! That's 5.56 per cent of our
population. Yet the Liberals continue to impose these
devices on a populace that doesn't want them, citing
unverified studies provided for them by the very
corporations who will profit from this boondoggle (citizens
forsafetechnology.org Smart meters and grid: Separating Fact
from Fiction).
Smart meters are costing B.C. taxpayers $1.6 billion.
First estimates of the savings over 20 years was $560
million, but this number keeps rising. Perhaps these
inflated figures are the result of Minister Coleman's having
learned the art of extrapolation in the RCMP, where somehow
an ounce of hashish can have a street value in the millions.
Our present analog meters have been working for decades
without problem. The new smart meters are expected to last
15 to 20 years. Exchanging paid-for, dependable, enduring
meters with unproven, shorterlived, expensive ones begs the
question "why"?
Does Hydro really need to know every time we turn on a
switch? Hydro already knows when peak use occurs - it's in
the morning when everyone's getting ready for work and again
in the evening when they're back home making supper. The
Liberals promised to pay Accenture millions of dollars each
year. Tell me they're not trying to bankrupt Hydro, with our
government's blessing.
